Flame suit on, did some searching on the forums and Google but didn't really find anything to answer my question so figured why not start a thread... no worse than 5 threads on a TRD Rear Sway bar upgrade. :)

2021 SR5, Verizon user. Read the factory Toyota Wifi in the truck is a joke and AT&T only.
Goal = able to have a strong WiFi signal in vehicle without having to constantly have laptop tethered off an iPhone hotspot.

Would like to know what setups / products guys are running. I live on the East Coast so I'm not out in the wilderness or doing any "real" off-roading. Just want to be able to have a solid stand alone unit in the vehicle that gives a WiFi signal.

Any insight on the topic would be great. A little confused on the Weboost products people are installing with antennas. Basically those systems are just amplifying the incoming cell signal?

I'm using Hum X through Verizon to give me stable WIFI in my Tundra. Loving it so far.

The weboost just boosts cell signals. No built in Wi-Fi. I have one and have been in some remote areas where I had a signal through it and working internet, but nothing outside the truck.

WeBoost will amplify inbound cell signals, you'll still need a wifi service.

Depending on how many devices you need connected you can look at 5G routers. Some folks use these to run internet from their homes. You would have to check coverage in your area and if the booster you use will amplify the 5G band (WeBoost does)

I’m curious what people are using the on board WiFi for. My cell phone has a cellular signal, so why do I need the WiFi? Just curious. Looking for ideas to use it.

The Wifi and Android Auto absolutely SUCKED in my truck. I don't use either of them anymore. Wifi would drop calls, AA would always freeze-up at the absolute WORST possible time... like in the middle of trying to navigate somewhere.

About the only feature that is worth a crap is the bluetooth... so that is all I use.
If I need Wifi in my truck, I just hotspot off my phone.

My next mission will be to locate the Wifi radio transmitter and disable it... likely with a hammer or 12g shotgun.

    Here's a thread with some info/feedback:

Some cell plans/devices don't support or have limited hotspot capabilities. WiFi becomes a necessity if you need to connect (multiple) laptops or other non-cellular enabled devices.

Correct I'd like to setup a wifi connection in my truck for my laptop without piggybacking on my cell phone.

Well how is that going to work without the cell connection to get you the Broadband that you can use with WiFi?

You need some kind of Broadband connection in the first place and then you can turn that into a WiFi signal that can be used between other devices but I am not aware of any Wide Area WiFi that will work on its own with no Cell based Broadband connection,do you?

This is all that your tethered phone connection is doing and same for the truck, there is just a cellular modem in it and a router and a WiFi Access Point on board.
