Coolant question (old red still look red?)

Maybe I’m blind also but this looks like rust colored water. If the inside of that radiator looks anything like that hose clamp your beyond flushing. Maybe a new radiator?

 

Take a pic of your Radiator looking down into the hole with the cap off. Grab a pic of the Rad Cap as well.

 

Just refilled with water and took about 1 1/3 gallons after draining all that would come out of the driver's side petcock.

 

I would consider it. Worst thing that could happen is the corrosion between the junction where the transmission fluid enters/exits the radiator and the coolant in the radiator itself. At that point you’ve entered “pink milkshake” territory and could cause extensive damage.

 

Just ran a test on the fluid coming out, seems pretty much like plain water.

- Source: My idiot self not being patient enough to wait for the pressure to come down enough before opening the petcock. And it tasted pretty much like water as I was being sprayed in the face.

 

Last year I had to replace my transmission pan due to stupidity and when I finally got the old pan to break free I got an entire face full of transmission fluid. My beard smelled like it. Eye pro saved me from having a miserable day.

 

Day ended uneventfully, let it run for 15-20 mins between draining and no overheating, though the only time it came close to that before was after an hour of highway driving, which was also before an oil change and a trans fluid change as well, so letting it run while revving it up a bit in the driveway probably wasn't going to get it there anyway.

Calling for an appt later this morning and will report back once I get the report where I'm sure they'll say it's going to be like $20k to fix everything. Super excited

 

Predictably the shop doesn't haven't an opening for a week and a half. So I'm going to try to hunt down that coolant clamp and try again to do a full drain/fill given I've got to wait anyway. Will update

 

Don't feel bad, it's a minimum of 3 weeks up here. Labor shortage.

If you are referring to that Spring Clamp they cost about $2 each from Toyota. They are very high quality clamps. Might as well grab a few just in case the other end needs it or you see some others that need replacing. They come with a release pull tab that allows you to slip them on and once in place pull the tab to snap the tension release. Stealer should stock them.

 

Minor update, ability to drive seems to have gotten worse as on the way to get it inspected I had to put it in 4WD just to get it to move from a stoplight and it was barely able to do so even at that. The shop looked at it and just said they couldn't get it to move but the carrier bearing looked like it was toast. So I ordered a new driveshaft which of course has a component on backorder, but should be to the shop in a week +/-. Told them just to install it as I'm beyond frustrated with it at this point and I'm also not 100% I can get it the 8 miles back home with as hard as it was to get it there.

 

Update....well kinda....shop called, new driveshaft is all installed and looked solid. But they claim it still won't move forward at all and believe it's a transmission issue, which they won't work on and gave me a few names for local transmission specialist shops. Also looked at local junkyards and it seems the average cost for a used trans is $300-5500 depending on mileage (150k-200k+).

Haven't seen it as they're closing up for the weekend but would guess it's still able to creep up to speed and maybe now doesn't have the wobble due to the new driveshaft, but curious what the group here things may still be wrong and which direction makes the most sense at this point.
