Total newbie question, just got my Tundra Saturday. Heading to pick up my boat soon, do I need to use S4? What about Tow/Haul mode?

When towing , always keep it on s4 with tow haul on .
Keep it between 55 and 60 mph and you will be fine .
S4 with the higher rpm will keep torque c locked most of the time and provide higher cooler circulation to the what is called warmer / cooler .
I tow 4000lb travel trailer and manage to keep my temps around 215 on pan average .

Yes, read your manual- towing is covered there. S4 or S5 will help keep the trans locked up so you are not gear hunting and generating extra heat. Your 2021 does not have a trans cooler. Should be no problem to tow that boat, that Tritoon and trailer would weigh about 5500lbs, well within what your truck and handle. Just take it easy, 65MPH or less. If you do a lot of towing, consider adding a trans cooler. Lots written about that here, just search upper right.

Your door sticker says 7000lbs towing capacity on a 2020? Is that Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR)? I thought the lowest towing capacity on any 2020 Crewmax was 8,800lbs. And my 2018 sticker does not show towing capacity on it anywhere.

All you need to do is pay attention to your payload numbers. If you are within the payload- passengers, gear, hitch weight all combined, you can tow it. Your available payload for your particular truck is on the sticker in drivers door.

Sure you can go over payload and the truck will pull it, but there some considerations and I will not go into the deep hole about all that. With towing- Can and should are two different things.

Check out the stickies in the tow forum here, is some good info about towing, payload, etc.

So, open your owners manual to the capacity section. There is a vehicle code on your door sticker. Use that code on the sticker and compare it to what is in the manual. That code will tell you tow capacity, and cargo weight. Thats it, it's that easy.

First thing is to never believe a salesman - always verify. A few know, but many don't, and some just lie.

Two things you need to look at:
GCWR for your truck, less cargo and passengers is your towing capacity.
GVWR, less the actual weight of your truck and everything in it, is your cargo capacity. Many people completely ignore this one.

Your truck probably has a cargo capacity of around 1,200 lb. It's real easy to get 1,000 lb of people and cargo in your truck before you even hook up your trailer, and then if your hitch weight is over 200 lb, you've already exceeded the cargo capacity your truck, and no tires, struts, air bags, etc can change that. On top of all that, you should ensure that your tongue weight is 10%-15% of total trailer weight for stability.

lot of threads implies that payload capacity includes 150 lb driver and full tank of fuel .
I am positive about the full tank of fuel but not so sure about the driver

A trucks GVWR minus the weight of the unloaded, unoccupied truck with a full gas tank will equal your payload. Simple as that. The standard driver weight is used to determine towing capacity, not payload. It's super easy to drive on the scales and confirm this.

Now someone please post a picture of your trailer or boat so we can get back on topic, lol.

We don't own a scale so I'm going to keep thinking I still weigh 140 until proven otherwise. :D

I kinda want one of those tent canopies. How much time/trouble is it to set up? Can I do it alone?

These are awesome , takes 5 min with me and the wife to put it together , you can do it alone but it is much easier with 2 persons . I believe I payed 60 for it and an additional 25 for the net , got it form job lot , totally worth it especially on those rainy days

Thanks! 31' 11" total. It has a killer layout inside. We traded in one with bunk beds because the kiddos never slept in them.

The sofa turns into a bed, as well as the dinette. There's also plenty of room to put down an air mattress if needed. (or with us of course, they're still little)

stupid question, but wouldn’t it be better to get a hitch shank with more adjustment for the WD hitch as opposed to the separate attachment?

My TT has such a short tongue one of those would be a benefit to get more clearance for the bikes hanging off the back of the truck!

If you tow in s6 and 75 mph your torque converter will stay locked as your rpm are up. I seen huge trailers in this thread towing 70 mph then I see stay under 60 and S4. you will get run over at those speeds, pull at 65-75 and roll on.

I just picked up my new Rockwood Mini Lite 2403KS last weekend its specs are 4600lbs dry, 6600lbs max, I had added Firestone airbags and found that I really didn't need them with the included weight distribution hitch she towed like a beauty. Now to load it up with 1900lbs of junk and try again!

To each their own , 55 - 60 mph is how I tow especially when I have my kids with me.
I believe I have a far better chance stopping should anything come up , I prefer to get where I am headed 20 min later then not getting there at all.

The owner's manual says not to exceed 65 when towing.
