Front locker on 1st Gen

Eaton and Harrop are the same locker?...

 

Question... if you wanted to install a true locker and regear at the same time, would the locker be specific to the new gear ratio? Say if the Harrop fits our trucks front end, would it no longer fit if we went from the 3.91 to the 4.56 gears?

Eaton does not sell an e-locker for any Toyota product. I'm guessing that the statement above means that Harrop licensed Eaton's technology and used it to create e-lockers for Toyota products that are very popular in Australia. That licensing fee would also help explain the high $$$$ cost of the Harrop which, IMHO, seems a good 40+%+ too expensive for what it is....

I'm not sure why Eaton doesn't make one for Toyotas....

 

The locker is generally independent of the ring/pinion gears...generally a given locker will fit a range of gear sizes on a a vehicle it was designed for.

Buy once, cry once is what you all have taught me. Eaton front locker on the way. Thinking I'll combine it with an Eaton Truetrac in the rear like the video suggests and might as well regear while I'm at it.

Thanks @tyler-brown for bringing Eaton to my attention and thank you everyone for always chiming in and pointing me in the right direction.

I wrote off the autolocker after reading about how the ADD system works. Seemed to me it would cause issues down the road even if I could deal with the noted steering problems.

$$$ being spent but I've had to "send it" a few times in the past, this all should help avoid potential breakdowns out in the middle of nowhere.

 

Not sure where your getting it from but I was thinking of getting it from here when I get new gears, the price seems right (not promoting just wondering if someone has found another better price)

For me, I like that they have the gear package as well (since I want to re gear)

 

That one is $30 cheaper than the one I bought from 4wheelparts.

Ok the front Eaton locker, Nitro 4.56 gears and a Nitro Helix™ 8.4" Helical Gear LSD are on their way. Found a gear shop near by with a ton of good(4.6 overall) google reviews who said they'd install everything for $700ish if I took them the parts and the pumpkins. Big expense but for what I have planned for this truck, it's going to be well worth it.

Sounds like you'll have yours done before me. Have to report back how the 4.56s are

 

Will do bud. I have a LSD now but at 200k miles, I can’t see it being very effective at this point. The one I got says it doesn’t wear out and was told it’s better than Eaton Trurtrac. I figure might as well go for a new one while the gears are being replaced.

oh, might want to take a look at justdifferntials. they didn’t charge me sales tax! I’m in Cali so 10% savings right there.

Haven’t driven much lately and haven’t had a chance to test out the new LSD or Locker but happy with the regear so far.

Very happy with them. Would do it again in a heart beat.

 

You’re on 33’s with minimal added weight right? Did 4.88’s cross your mind at all?

 

Right, my truck isn’t getting any lighter…..

 

33’s, full skids with sliders and a bed rack for RTT in the works. I went with 4.56 based on info I got here. On long trips where I drive 80+mph I figured 4.88’s would have high RPMs. With the 4.56 I’m under 3k RPM between 80-90mph and mid to low 2k RPM around 75mph so it’s worked out well for me.

Edit to elaborate on the 4.56, there is a high incline section of the 5north freeway when driving north from LA. Very steep incline where trucks manage 30-40mph id assume cause they seem like they are parked.
I wasn’t loaded when I went up that section and averaged 70mph at around 2,100rpm. Never having to downshift to maintain speed or accelerate. That was the moment I felt the 4.56 were perfect for what I needed.

 

Same with Big booty Judy! She might be adding another 1k pounds next year.

 

Sounds good! I went with 4.88’s after considering 4.56’s for years. Hope I made the right call.

 

Noticable fuel milage hit with 4.56s? Id expect some, but not too much, 4.7 likes to spin.

 

Shouldn’t it get better mileage?

 

I recovered some mpg. A hit compared to a stock truck, maybe. Compared to a truck on 33s, the 4.56 improved economy vs the 3.91gears I had.

Now, that was an unintended benefit and I don't claim it will do the same for everybody, nor is the cost of gearing going to pay itself off. I did it for the torque only.

 

Maybe with bigger tires in city driving. I was thinking more along the lines of highway milage where taller is better.

 

Mpg improved. Hit 17mpg a few times with freeway driving and 13-14 city. But after the headers went in(and this may only be because I’ve been a little heavy footed enjoying myself lately) freeway down to 15 with city around 12.
