800 for a house payment? I wish my house payment is 3800 a month. Like i said i can afford it i just think its crazy.

 

Not never, just most of the time. (If one regards them as an expense rather than an asset then it's easier to swallow.)

Two anecdotal exceptions:
- I bought a 1998 Ford F250 for $3000. Changed the oil and drove it for a year. Sold a year later for $3000. The value didn't change, it was already fully depreciated.
- Son bought a 2009 Toyota Tacoma a year ago, $13.5k. He could now easily sell it for 20k. His value increased, no lie.

Peasants should stick with buying used cars. Those with a little money buy used or new, doesn't matter. Those with a lot of money tend to always lease because they understand it's just an expense. (I'm still closer to the 'peasant' category... but I know people who could easily buy several new cars a year without putting a dent in their wallet)

 

All of this makes me more determined to keep my current tundra and just drive till it cant driven any longer.

That and I pretty much decided I want a corvette, so after the tundra is paid for, I start shopping.

 

Buying used for cash rules.

 

Our house payment is about $800 - *AND* that's a 15 year loan. Awh yeah.

 

If Toyota's interest rate is too high, check with your bank. When I financed mine, I secured a good rate with the bank before I went to the dealership. I found what I wanted in my price range (used, but certified), and started the paperwork. When we went to the finance manager, I showed him the interest rate offered by the bank and let him decide whether to beat it or not. He did. He didn't appear to like it, but it was simply a case of "make a little, or make nothing". Very few will fail to cut the interest a little if if means they get to finance the truck instead of the bank.

 

I was told from a Toyota employee that the 2021 Tundras are no longer in production. I guess getting prepped for the changeover. Also you might get lower interest rates from a credit union.

 

Our is around $1400 per month. Easily affordable, but less is better. I'm guessing though it could be relative to a point. A region with $800/month house payments might consider $20/hour to be a great wage. I don't even consider answering my phone for that, nevermind rolling out of bed.

 

Yeah, I know there are exceptions to the rule, but you can't count on those, and you can't count on COVID disrupting the supply chain, creating artificially higher prices.

And personally, I don't like the term "peasant." The connotation is that you are and always will be a peasant. The United States I grew up in allowed anyone to improve their financial situation.

House is worth +60k minimum than when we bought but would never increase our work needs

I can answer that....... I spent 15+ years as an exec in the petroleum industry, then switched to section of construction almost 2 years ago. Now in the paving, concrete, and excavation world.

Now keep in my every area is different and I am talking Tennessee/Midsouth......

Our aggregates, or rocks in asphalt went up roughly $2.00/ton on January 1. Went from roughly $18/ton to $20/ton. Depending on the mix, there are 4 different sizes you use in asphalt. Sand is another component in just a few mixes and it is roughly $14.00/ton.

The next and most important ingredient is your Liquid AC/tar/binder. This is a petroleum product made from waste oil mostly. At the end of last year, cost was about $322/ton at the terminal. Fast forward to the month of April and cost is now $419 per ton.


Long story short, the cost of asphalt has skyrocketed in the last couple months. Overall cost is up about 26% depending on mixes. We have about 25 different mixes we run depending on job and who it is for.

On average at the end of last year, cost was about $68.00, now it is roughly $87 in just about 3 months.

Labor has stayed flat and the same today as it was even a couple years ago.

A loaded out Mack dump truck that was $168k delivered a few months ago, is now about $191k since the first of the year.......

Just to put a few things into perspective for anyone that cares or wants to know.

 

There have been so many engineers laid off in the last year that tons of companies can get away with posting jobs they call entry level positions that are paying less than I was making as an intern 10 years ago but require 5+ years of experience.

I hear ya. Same deal in welding. I'm making less per hour as a jman than I was as a 3rd year apprentice, but at least I'm working for now. I'm applying for jobs outside the industry though and look foward to putting this industry behind me.

 

What Power Generation Company do you work for. I work for Caterpillar and I have been there for 22years. Class 1 Tech and yes I make over $40 and hour / after 8 hours it's time 1/2 and after 12 hrs it's 2 times my hourly rate. Love my job,

To be fair, I live in the middle of Missouri (right near Fort Leonard Wood), where the standard of living is just the TEENSIEST bit lower than Bakersfield or other places. When we moved here, we bought a heck of a deal on a house (2.3 acres, basement, etc. for less than $80K). After 8 years we built an addition on our house; and because we've fixed up the house, taken care of it, replaced, etc., we've been blessed enough to have a VERY well built house that's more than big enough for us without huge bills.

True, it'd be nicer to have a flashier/more outfitted house....but that'd also mean a flashier mortgage, and when you're within 10 years of paying it off (assuming we don't double down on payments), it's hard to find an argument for doing much other than simply upgrading what we have.

 

Uh, maybe someone already mentioned this... but last time I checked... incentives change all of the time. After everyone spends their stimulus money the incentives will be back.

 

Looks pretty cool. Not sure if I'd qualify as just a welder though. Might need to start at the bottom and work my way up. Coincidence that it's electrical generation though. The job I'm applying for is actually on a huge hydro-electric project and should give me the opportunity to get my project management certification.
