Ugh. Those Edge kids are the worst.

Same. Kelly was showing me our realtor's new house and my first takeaway was, "WHY IS IT SO CLOSE TO THE NEIGHBORS??!" (~3100 sqft on probably on 2 acre lots)
Ideal minimum distance between neighbors is close enough to tell if it's a bonfire or a structure fire, but far enough to not smell it.

@KarmaKannon and others with a fiberglass camper shell, what made you want a glass shell vs a soft topper or something of the likes?
I’ve found a snug top local for cheap that needs a little work but not sure if I should wait and just get a soft topper?

Soft shell around here is asking for a knife to be taken to it. Plus they don’t make one for my 8ft bed. Hard shell is nice. And eventually I’ll add a roof rack to it, the other bonus

Same as what @empty_lord stated about the knife and possibility of mounting things to the shell plus I want to armor up my windows and doors to make it even harder to break in. I like the way the soft toppers look though and opening the sides would be great for the desert. Fading of the canvas would also piss me off.

Is your shell set up for mounting things, or it’s not a big deal to drill and mount rails and what not?
I’m basically looking for one, for the same reason you mentioned; if we want to go camping with the fam and bring the dogs, it’s not happening safely. When we do bring them in the 4runner it’s very cramped and LOADED. So this would free up a lot of space, haha might HAVE to upgrade the rear springs after if it sags.
The one I found is a snug top but needs new window and locks so I could upgrade maybe to a windoor? But it’s cheap enough, it’s hard to pass up......

Shouldn't be an issue to drill and bolt some mounts. I've seen some different options and I don't know exactly what I'd do. My most likely thing to mount would be an awning. The tepui ones were cheap last time I had our sales guy at work check and they can be mounted with a simple L bracket. When I worked for a shell place it seemed like most windows could be traded out for windoors. Another option is putting some aluminum sheet in place of the glass.

Luckily for me I found a shell with the nice frameless back window. The issue is that it complicates things if I want to change the glass out for some aluminum. Still possible though. Not like I can see anything out of the shell anyway. Something like 5% tint on the back truck window with whatever is on the back shell window makes it look solid.

My she'll is also nice and skirted in the sides. It looks nicer, but mounting a rack to the bed and throwing the shell on top of the mounts means I have to cut the skirt.

I'll have to take more pictures of my box for you and share some ideas. I can't tell you how much use I get out of it.

I wouldn't ever consider a soft topper personally because of the desert wind. I'm very biased though because I've been camping in this cap for over 10 years now.

We’re having a windy mindy kinda night down in southern az tonight, and wind while camping out outdoors always sucks and makes things miserable usually. Thanks for the wind input aspect of caps.

Growing up Edge, (still here, still here, after all these forking years...where did you go?) everyone Edge is an Edge Kid.
Same goes for punk kids and hardcore kids.
Makes no difference to me if you're 18 or 58. If you're Edge, you're an Edge Kid.

Jeebus, if there are Edge Kids old enough to retire....that means I'm getting old.
    I call BS.

There are only a few downsides to a fiberglass camper shell IMO.

    1) decreased visibility, which can be helped with a back up camera.

    2) it becomes harder to use the bed as it was intended. I had to switch to bagged mulch instead of having them fill my bed with a bobcat. If we didn't have 2 dogs I would get a diamondback tonneau and mount a RTT on that. I still think the camper shell was one of the most useful things I've added to my truck. I put some dog beds back there and open the front window, they love it. One dog goes to sleep and our crazy husky stands there for 8 hours feeling the breeze.

I came here to say this. In fact I would go as far as to say that a good amount of our society problems would be non issues with a bit more space.

A soft topper is disposable. A fiberglass topper is a lifetime purchase. Do you want a 4runner or a kia?

nope. Monstaliner is designed to roll on. I’m going to do the bumper, my sliders, and the bed all at once myself, once the weather gets warmer.

I looked at that one before. I read the wheels break off from some reviews though, so be aware.

I, myself, just decided to upgrade the wheels on my craftsman creeper than buying a new one.

Ventilation is very important!!!! That shit is super strong!!!! I’ve done the plastic bumper on our 4runner bashed it and dragged down rocks, it just cracked it where the plastic folded!
Last spring I did my bed, fender flares and bumper, it’s good stuff but like any painting, prep is KING!!

For those of you who have swapped in the Baja designs in your fogs, did you run them to their on switch or splice them into you oem fog light controls?
