What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Timing belt time. Kit showed up today. After scrollin thru hundreds of different kits and learning what I have about this job and the truck, i went with an all genuine Toyota oem parts kit. Opened it up to find that the timing belt has no timing marks on it. The majority of the belts I looked at and have seen on videos had the 3 marks labeled R-cam, L-cam, and crank, and I guess I had assumed the Toyota belt would as well. Moving on.... I know that the marks on the belt aren’t entirely necessary to time the truck correctly, but I like the idea of using them, so this is the plan I’ve come up with; in disassembling the front of the engine, before removing the timing belt, I’ll crank it over by hand until my marks are all on point, and mark each with a paint pen. Once the belt is removed, I’ll transfer marks to the new belt before installing it. Any thoughts/ideas/experiences are welcome. I don’t believe this should make any difference, but it will be the first tb replacement @ 154k miles

 

Where did you buy the stuff that’s “OEM”? Oem belts walkways have marks. If you bought off Amazon or eBay there’s a good chance you’ve got counterfeit


If there’s ANY doubt in the quality of the belt DO NOT install it. A fake factory belt can spell the end of a motor

 

Was that on a DC or AC?

Haven’t looked lately, but the AC was always about $50 less than the DC for both HD or regular duty.

If you got that kit off EBAY, I would send it back. Way too many fakes on Ebay these days....it's either Rock Auto or Toyota dealers that participate in discount parts programs for me.

 

I have purchased from AirCabinMan on eBay and he has a good reputation on T4r for the kits. I was very pleased. I think he basically compiles the parts together, just making it a little easier/cheaper to buy what you need for the job.

There are Toyota dealers that sell on Ebay as well that I think are legit. It's when someone is selling "OEM kits" and the price is 25%+ cheaper than what you can get from the Toyota dealers directly that compete in the discount parts program that I start to get suspect...

The belt looks be of great quality, REALLY doubt it’s a fake. Everything in the kit came separately packaged in Toyota/Lexus genuine parts boxes and sealed bags, and all with part number stickers with barcodes. The timing belt itself is actually marked, w/Toyota stamp but not with the 3 timing marks

 

It's probably fine...but fakes are really good these days. I would call your local dealer and ask them if the OEM belt they stock has timing marks...

those marks dont come off easy either. ive reused belts with 30k on them and still readable marks.

 

yes, those are the cam marks I’m talking about. Have you ever seen a timing belt without them? I was pretty confident in the quality and packaging until I just watched that video. Thanx speedtre. I actually live about 2 miles from a dealership, I think I’m gonna take my box o goodies up and have a service tech verify authenticity, just gonna have to James Bond past the service writers without being seen first.

No offense to those guys, but I'm not sure I would trust them to get it right. I'd return it and order from a dealer.

 

I’d personally return it and order the AISIN kit I posted in the timing belt thread, or order the belt from one of the online dealers (pretty much employee pricing)

Check with Toyota Parts Programme. My Toy Stealer parts guy also says that Programme is basically Employee Pricing, as well.

 

AC, I think the DC is basically the HD version already.

I always forget how feather dusted your Tundra really is. It inspires me to add more wax to mine every time. I'm waiting for April 1st to wax my camper shell paint for the first time. I'll be sure to post something here.

 

Thanks for noticing. To be straight up, its always been an outside truck and never garaged. I’ve *tried* to wash it at least every 2 months and *tried* for at least two coats of wax per year. Some years these got more attention and other times less.

The OEM Paint is solid on this 1D6. I have a few scratches from knuckle heads, but very few deep ones. The primer coat is thick on a cross section analysis. Clear coat is holding pretty good!

I did a compound cut and wax last year using Meguiars Kit. Every couple years it gets claybar’d for saps and tars.

Started using The Meguiars Wash Soap with Carnauba Wax in it last year and it is awesome! Keeps the hand wax coat refreshed longer it seems. Before I just used dish soap or mild degreaser for economy and waited for side of the road finds for ‘whatever’ wax usually Turtles Old Skool.

The AeroSpace303 is used on everything trim inside and out. Awesome! When I want to get lucky with MzPHM I bust out the Old Skool Interior Amour All with the Original Formula and take her on a ride.
