What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

I think it also has a lot to do with JBL/non JBL and 6 disc/non 6 disc. It seems that the trucks with the disc changer and non JBL have the remote amp that mounts behind the hvac controls since the radio doesn’t have room for the internal amp.

A buddy gave me the same set, that he got from his Dad. I spent time with an OptiVisor and sewing machine needle, pick cleaning each file, then cleaning the case. Good tools that bear a heritage are worth restoration.

 

I can't tell you how many times I used these damn things to fix threads on ground down bike wheel and skateboard truck axles! Case is ratty but the files are still good as ever!

All and all it turned out pretty good, it sounds nice, I still need to take it on the highway and see how it drives and how it sounds, probably have to tighten things down after some heat cycles. It was definitely a pain in the ass for sure, but well worth it for me. Definitely more power, but it’s hard to notice because
I’m tuned into the sound, then I look and I’m doing 30 over........
I either have a leak or just a tick sound in the notes somewhere? Seems to be from the passenger side which is a relief if anything. Rear O2 extension harness should be in this week, let’s see if some stacked Fowler’s take care of any cels!
Also, it was sooo damned windy today!!!! It was nice to take it all inside and weld it up; which I didn’t wear long sleeves......... so I’ve got some sweet arc sun burn on my guns, the redness highlights my freckly muscles, thankfully I live where you can walk out your door, cut some aloe, fillet it, and rub it all over!

Meanwhile, on the steering wheel ... I know you just bought a new cover. You should've just bought a factory leather-wrapped wheel (used, eBay) with the correct cover. With controls etc. Would've saved $$ in the long run. That's ultimately what I ended up doing. It was, like, do I want to spend $60 and 2 hours on the Loncky wrap, trying to get it right, or just buy a nice used 2004-2009 4Runner or similar SUV wheel for $101 shipped. I opted for the latter. Here's the guy and the auction number I bought from (it's a different steering wheel now, not leather-wrapped! But check his other stuff). For another $80 (I think?) he was throwing in the airbag, front cover and controls.

I used to have that problem with kingpins all the time. I eventually learned to flip the kingpins so that the nut is in the truck base and the bolt head gets ground instead.

 

Is there a how-to or a list of wheels that will work on our trucks? Is it the same for all years of first gen Tundra?

 

4th gen 4runner, 05-11 Tacoma, 1st gen sequoia, 03-06 Camry, and some Lexus all had the wheel that will be “bolt on” technically any toyota wheel from like 05 and up will work with 04-06 tundras if you repin the controls. Airbag will plug and play.

 

Yup, didn't figure that out until about 5 years in. Sadly, with how many stairs and handrails I hit, no good solve for axles.

What he said VV - @empty_lord is who provided direction for me at the start. It just so happens the 4Runner seemed to be the most readily available, despite the amber (vs. green) controls.

 

The last time I asked, it seemed like it was going to be a ton of work to get audio controls added to my 02. I'd be happy with just a nicer feeling and more modern looking wheel. I'll start looking on eBay.

 

Go on tacomaworld and look up then1st gen Tacoma steering wheel swap. It’s documented how to get the newer wheel working in the older trucks, but you will need an airbag and clock spring from an early sequoia

Im still confused, does it only bolt on if its a 04-06 tundra? Or all Tundras 00-06

 

I know for a fact the 04-06 have the newer clock spring and dual stage airbags. 03 i don’t know for sure. 02 and older are single stage airbags with the same wheel as a first gen taco

 

Added the missing sticker that I forgot at home the other day.

 

Alignment. Then tried chemical guys black clay bar on the headlamps. That worked surprisingly well.

 

Not sure if this fella is sleeping for the night, or if he is dropping off a Tacoma in the morning.

Parts pickup ... at this point, preventative maintenance of tailgate rod clips (purple, orange, white), and proactive replacement of cowl clips, although I don't think mine's leaking yet. At an average of $1.50/ea clip, I figured I may as well replace them all while a 10% sale was goiong on at the local stealership and get one or two extras in case they get discontinued. Writeup for tailgate overhaul forthcoming!

Oh, and got a good deal on the mesh back ball cap. My lucky old Pennington hat is on its last leg.

 

This is what I think I remember from when I last had mine apart...I'll have to see what I get in there again.

Thanks man, I've been watching eBay for a few months and jumped on this airbag and cover because it was well under $100 (best offer was accepted). I may go ahead and pick up a nice leather wheel with switches as well. Thanks for the PM!

Thanks for all the info guys. Great discussion. Hopefully over the next few days I'll have some time to look into this on my truck. I'll snap some pics and post my findings in the hopes it might help someone in the future.

 

I will say, that reply I posted a link to up above about steering wheel/controls overhaul ... at the end of that specific reply you'll see several threads externally, two of which were just linked by others. I tried to consolidate all the info into one place for when I did my Bluetooth controls add-on, and for future people searching the forum, I wanted to provide a one-reply basis for everyone to get the info they need, regardless their specific model. I have a replacement leather-wrapped 4Runner steering wheel for months now, I have the new right-hand controls, I have the ribbon connection cables... just haven't gotten off my ass to install. Too much going on.

That said, I've got an aftermarket head unit so I installed a steering wheel control module (

$64 Axxess ASWC-1 Steering Wheel Control Interface

Axxess ASWC-1) that auto-detects what steering wheel switches you have and what your radio supports, then auto-configures the conversation between the two. No hacking, no fuss. Made it very easy. I believe adding the right-hand Bluetooth/phone controls should be a no-brainer, although I may need to reset that ASWC unit to detect? We'll see whenever I can get there.

Had a close call the other day with a load resistor for my LED headlights catching fire. luckily I noticed the smell and popped the hood and noticed the fire just in time. I was able to get it put out before it got out of hand. The airbox caught fire and will need to be replaced, but it could have been a lot worse! PSA....Be careful with cheap resistors...

 

Yikes. I probably would have parked the truck in my garage and let we rip for a while till the neighbors called the fire department lol

 

More China shit I'm sure. One of our goals for 2021 is to try and buy less junk made in China. It's not easy.

 

It’s nearly impossible. I have no issues buying American stuff but when it costs 2-3 times as much and doesn’t last half as long I have issues. I would own a GM vehicle is they survived passed 150K miles but alas, that seems to be a pot of gold at the end of a non-reachable rainbow
