Everything looks real nice. The finish turned out sweet for a backyard job. All that tape off work is the $$$ look.

Thanks For the feedback guys, Much appreciated! I”m pretty happy with it so far. The more I look at it, I’m thinking I have to black out the badges now, Door handles too. Maybe spray bedliner and then top that with the jet black like in the front.

Only thing I’m not sure about is the door jambs. I was thinking about spraying those areas with my airbrush, but I’m not sure. I don’t think I would be able to airbrush the clear coat and have it look right. Still working it out in my head I guess.

 

It's a LOT of work jambing any car but might be worth it. I say that yet don't intend to do my jambs, at least not now. But, there are some pretty affordable detail guns available. I was just looking at a DeVilbis 'cause that's what my primary gun is and what I'm used to. But I ended up getting a cheap one from TCP and it arrived today. I'll be testing it soon hopefully

 

Glock40 What do you think of this? I photoshopped the trd symbol and blacked out the handles. Too much? It’s not a trd but I would cut the stencil to say tun

 

is that what they use, a detail gun? I was thinking I could just use my regular gun. I use a black widow. I had planned on just doing the truck all as one piece and not touching the jambs, but I think the color match wasn’t perfect and I don’t want the jambs being off a shade. I’ve heard it sucks but, What is the difficult part about doing the jambs. Like, What is the basic process, if you don’t mind?

 

It's a lot more work to do the jambs, obviously, but usually results in a nicer job. I've found prep is super important for jambs so the paint sticks well. I use this DeVillbis gun for jambs and such. Works well and can be dialed down for small patterns. Good work so far.

 

It's just a lot of prep, removing or taping rubber, removing parts, sanding, wiping down etc. Then a lot of masking to protect the interior. Then, the way I've done it, is to tape/mask the jambs to prevent over spray spoiling all the freshly painted jambs. I've shot 3 pearls and 1 candy but I'm no pro painter. I've probably only sprayed +/- 20 cars and gel coat on 3 boats so my advice isn't worth much. You seem to have a firm grasp on the situation. There are a couple photos of my progress on my build page so no reason to muddy up your thread with pics. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to seeing the final result.

 

So I’m painting my hood and I’m about half done with the first coat when the cross brace on my scaffolding spray booth pops loose and comes down on top of the fresh painted hood. Not excited about this..

 

Got to the door handles, mirrors and most of the trim today. Coming along nicely so far with minimal issues. I did the base of the handles a couple shades darker than the body, then sprayed Dulpi-Color bedliner on the handles themselves, then nason jet black bc/cc on top of that. (adhesion promoter between coats). Fenders got re-done the other day too. Didn’t get pics yet, though. Everything super shiny! I think it’ll buff well.

I’ve seen videos with guys saying it’s great though and their guns are typically pretty good.
I’ll let u know as soon as the wind stops blowing and I get a chance to use it.

 

Finally got to painting my hood today...

it looks horrendous! The paint began to crinkle after I laid the second coat. Some type of chemical reaction apparently. I don’t even wanna show pics I’m so embarrassed. I didn’t know what to do so I figured... keep on spraying(don’t do this). I laid the 3rd coat and it got much worse. I’m guessing sand back down to original primer, spray new 2k primer and give it another go. I’ve got a lot to learn apparently.

 

Ahhh, been there. That usually happens if there is too much time between coats, the second eats into the first one, unless there are days between coats, then it's usually okay.. How long between #1 and the second? I think your plan is a good one but would be good to figure out what happened so it won't do it again. Anything on re-coat times on the paint container? That hood is cursed I think.

lol I was thinking the same. This thing is definitely cursed! Other that or else I just don’t have the experience to know what’s what (Probably the latter).
Honestly I couldn’t tell you how long between coats. However long it took to clean my gun, mix more paint and straighten up my area. Felt like ten minutes but probably closer to 20.

Also my spray pattern was coming out heavy at the top and bottom but light in the middle, leaving stripes that I kept going back and trying to fix. So I’m 100% sure I ended up putting way to much paint on the hood. The paint is nason urethane and I’ve been told that it doesn’t cover well and takes an extra coat sometimes, so I guess that’s why I just kept on painting even though I knew something was off

 

20 minutes shouldn't be a problem between coats. I wonder if you can get a hold of a paint rep for your paint and ask what might have gone wrong. No point of it happening again, although i don't think you have had problems on your other parts you've refinished already. Good luck going forward. cheers.
