They had to go to coil springs in the rear. Pretty excited about this. No more rear end ass jiggling.

 

Very nice, should ride like a dream. Now just put back in a 5.7 w/ forced induction.
note the snubber inside the coil.
I have just added these to my leaf spring setup for sway / roll and increased capacity for load.

 

Looks like the fuel tank is on the right side and muffler towards the left side?

 

Agree, they should still have the 5.7 as an option.

Did a little research on the pros/cons of coil springs vs leaf springs. Looks like Toyota is addressing Tundra low payload ratings while maintaining a smooth ride for the urban cowboy. This from the Dodge Forum:

The upside to the leaf springs is that they are very strong, being comprised of a series of thick metal strips – or leafs – strapped together and fastened to the underside of the truck...

When (engineers) needed a stronger spring, they could simply add another leaf or two to the assembly, improving the strength of the suspension without adding significantly to the cost of the setup. Also, the basic design of a multi-leaf spring allows for some measure of variable rate dampening, as more force applied to the leaf springs leads to more friction between the strips of metal and that leads to increased spring resistance. Of course, that stacked-up metal is also strong and durable, with each layer essentially supporting the next...

The other key upside to the leaf setup is that it has fewer parts than a coil setup, so whether you are repairing or modifying, leaf springs cost less as a system than coils...

The biggest downside to the leaf setup is that it offers limited tuning capabilities. This is old school technology and there is only so much that today’s engineers can do to make a load-rated leaf spring setup ride smoother. Coil Springs: Pros and Cons

Since a multi-link coil setup uses a variety of different components, the system has a higher cost than the leaf setup, so a truck with rear coils is generally going to cost more than one with a rear leaf setup. Also, since the coil spring only handles the weight of the vehicle and not the axle location, some coil setups begin to wobble a bit in some situations...

The biggest advantage is that with the various components of the coil setup, engineers can tune the suspension to offer a better mix of functionality and ride quality. By making adjustments elsewhere in the suspension, engineers can increase the load-carrying abilities without causing a rock-hard ride and along those same lines, the handling of the truck can be improved without killing the working abilities...

Finally, since the coil spring offers a much greater range of movement than a leaf spring, (the truck) has greater wheel travel when off-roading, so the coil spring is better on-road, off-road and when carrying a load, but it costs a bit more.

Now we know what those shields low on the bottom of test mules were hiding, and it wasn't a hybrid battery.

The shields in front of the wheels were hiding those bigass track bars that tie the rear axle to the frame on each side. They look pretty low to me. I believe I would have tried to locate them higher for more ground clearance. I only see one single transverse bar tying the axle to the frame laterally. Interesting scoop @frichco228.

 

Can’t really mount them higher on a factory vehicle. The higher the frame mount the more front to back play the axle has when articulating. Causing more stress on the driveline and panhard bar. FYI.

 

Trd.jon says Crewmax with the 6.5 so it's gotta be true!

At first, I thought it was a DC, but I think it's the window cutout in the cover that misleads. Look at the distance from the front door rear edge to back of cab...it's nearly the same like a crewmax. Also, you can see the standard door handle bulges in the cover. DC has nearly flush handles.

A DC without the fugly back door would be great. I don’t mind the DC cab configuration but damn that door leaves a lot of aesthetics on the table.

That's how most linked suspensions are, proper link geometry is much more complicated than any leaf spring setup. Trying to optimize link separation, triangulation, anti squat, roll axis, etc. doesn't leave many options for mounting locations. If you look at a 4Runner or Land Cruiser they look the same roughly. The track bar is the lateral load reacting member that goes left to right (also referred to as a panhard).

 

To be fair, the driver looks like a woman or a small person, but that's definitely a crewmax. You can see the rear door outline in the camo, and the door frame at the rear leaves hardly any area for the C? pillar, unlike the current DC which has a big wide C pillar.
