Upsizing Ridge Grapplers on new DC Pro

I know addressed repeatedly but I’m going to post for the latest. New 2021 DC TRD Pro in bound from dealer to driveway with 10 miles on ODO. Factory installed 275/65/18 Nitto RG’s.

If I want to upsize to 285s, seems like I would pick up nearly 2” of lift (32” to 34” diameter) with no rubbing, perhaps just with removal of front mud flaps?? 295’s are a different story, require lift kit or fender works.

Do I have that right? Pros/cons 275 vs 285 in the NRG’s? Driven Gen 1 for 15 years but no experience with modifying suspension or tire size. I’m not a rock crawler or hard core off road but work sand and rock beaches in northeast and do some back woods stuff fly fishing.

I can't speak about the Nittos as I have 295/70 R18 Cooper AT3 XLTs. I installed the TRD Pro Fox suspension and no other lifting is needed to fit the 295's - yours comes factory equipped with the Fox coil-overs (2" of lift) so you should be good. However, I did need to trim the skid plate "ears", remove the small front flap, and use a heat gun to shape the well liner about 1/2" toward the bumper - easy work. If going to the 285/70's NRG's, it seems your work would only become easier.

 

I have 285/70/18 Ridge Grapplers on my 21 LR, I didn’t change or modify anything. No rubbing and you do not have to remove the front spat flap.

Would/did either of you consider 285/75/18’s? Another inch so essentially 35’s but I think another 10-12 lbs per tire. Figured might be an issue with rubbing but also start to get into gas mileage?

I'll agree with @Badknees my next tire will probably be a 275/60/20 Cooper AT3 XLT..
On my 2014 I had stock 285/55/20 KOs, and now run 275/60/20 KO2s..

 

Really don't want to deal with any rubbing and definitely don't want the extra weight..here is my current truck with the 285 70 18 Ridge Grapplers

I have the 285/75/18's on my 2019 Pro. They did rub a little on the front spats, but very simple to remove to fix that issue! They look sweet though, stuff the wheel wells nicely.

Did you see any decrease in gas mileage jumping up to the 285’s. Also I assume there 10ply. Anything negative with them. Any reason you did not go to 275/70/18? Thanks Don.

 

Providing an update. I’m going to 295/70/18 and putting on a 1/1.75 lift with CB TRD Pro kit with 1.25” Bora spacers. The hardest part has been tire selection but think I’m going with the Toyo OC A3s, seem a little more well rounded with snow rating. (Anyone need 275/65/18 Ridge Graps?!) Sticking with my stock Pro BBS wheels.

 

What lift are you running?

AA, not sure if that was directed to me but I’m using kit per below. David reached out to me and was really generous with his time. Asked questions no one else did, like about my deflation practices for beach driving. Very consultative, and we are taking into account some load on bed from topper, racks, etc. Really feel comfortable with the approach.

My install is being done by real pros here in Richmond area, Davis Offroad. Can’t wait, Will posts pic. 3 weeks out.

I changed my stock tires at 200 miles roughly back in November’ish I believe. Then winter fuel hit and lots of remote starting at work so with that I get lower gas mileage. I don’t know what I’d truly of gotten if I woulda stayed stock as I had a 2020 4Runner Pro before the Tundra.

I believe each tire from the stock Michelin’s to the tire I have now is 20lbs per tire heavier. If I had to guess ima say come summer I will get 1-1.5mpg less now than what stock would give you. Also the speedo is off too when you change sizes, you’ll be actually going faster than what it reads out. There are websites out there that’ll calculate the sizes for you to give you an idea of the speed change.

And I wanted the biggest size I could go without any changes/modifications to the truck. Didn’t wanna cut or remove stuff.

I honestly have no cons against the tires, I live in Illinois and it snowed a bunch this year so I got to test them out plenty so far even in the rain and during both conditions I never felt uncomfortable pushing the truck. Tires I must say are excellent and don’t make a bunch of noise like a true mud tire would. If I was to get another set I’d get them again as long as they wear good down the road. I only have about 2.7k on them now.

Those Toyos are close to 70 lbs just as the RG's are in the same size. I stayed with the 285/70's due to the weight. There is practically no size difference between the 285 and 295. The weight difference wasn't worth it.

 

The 295/70 Toyo OC A3 are 63#, so 3# per tire heavier than the 285/70 Graps. I know it adds up but I’m going for a little more width and a tad more height. Like I said, tough choice. I probably don’t need the E rating for my needs but struggling with alternatives. Looked at Terra Grap but I’m not confident they will be quieter than the A3.

 

I had Terra Grapplers. They got noise and slippery. The Toyo is a much better tire over the Terra Grappler.

 

My 4Runner had Terra Graps from factory, I’d steer clear of those. Drive on the highway in rain and you feel like you’re going to hydro plane even driving safe. IMO, I’d say those are the worst tires I have ever had.

I have 285’s Ridge grapplers on my 2020 pro now. They ride decent. Not sure if I will change my tires write away on my Luna rock. Doing some research with these great forum members on here. I might just stay stock size but go with something more aggressive like the Ridge Grapplers. I already have my SCS wheels and 285’s sold from my pro. I had 3 people interested in my F5’s.

I put 295/70/18 Cooper AT3's on my Plat Tundra with a 2.5 inch leveling kit. Go bigger you won't regret it.
