The main problem with Turbo's in addition to wastegate actuation and system problems is the bearing. People who get on it before the oil is warm, or who ride it hard and then shut off can damage the turbo bearings, either scoring when the oil is cold, or coking when shut off too hot. Modern Turbos have water jackets to help with this, but good habit is to let the engine idle for a few minutes before shutting it off. I had an accusump system in my Saab 900 Turbo that would circulate oil through the turbo and engine for 2-3 minutes after shutting down if I wanted. Was also a pre-oiler as well. You just couldn't do both. If you used it to cycle oil on shut down, the pressure would drop and would be a normal cold start. Other than that, if the engine is built with a turbo in mind, there should be no difference.

I put 500K miles on my 1982 Saab 900 Turbo APC..... Not my car, but this has been floating around Saab Net for years.;) Motor was reportedly on a dyno.

I mean a tundra is even close to the weight of my gas f250 which is 6,700lbs for a 3/4 ton.

Now, I got excited what your tune can do to this little monster, if this is indeed the new Tundra's engine.

A Tundra splits the F150 and F250 based on online specs. F150 - ~4600 lbs, Tundra - 5500 lbs, F250 gas - 6450 lbs, diesel - 7300 lbs. Don't know if I'd call that close, but the Tundra definitely needs to go on a diet

Automotive generations are defined by the engineers’ model codes, not by someone who writes for the online “press room” of a giant multinational corporation. The XK50 platform from 2007 is still currently in production. This means the Tundra is still in gen 2.

Either the person who threw that page up made an error that never got fixed, or they think it’s better press for Toyota to call the facelift/refresh of a 14-year model run a new gen since so many others are referring to it that way anyway. It does not trump the model codes set by the design engineers.

I don't trust car bloggers as far as I can throw them either.

We'll see what Toyota says when the truck is actually released. As of now, the "4th gen" section is just a place to wrangle all the 2022 threads. The amount of them that get created in a week instead of adding to the dozens that already exist is just mind boggling.

The F150 weights the same amount as a 5th gen 4Runner? I would think the F150 would weight more...no?

My tundra was over 6000 when it was on the scale. I dont remember the exact number but I think it was close to 6400 lbs if not more.

Understood. It’s not the parts suppliers or car bloggers I’m saying are the final arbiters. It’s the Toyota engineers who set the model codes (which are in the wiki link). Just showing many others on the web are supporting that we’re still in gen 2 as well.

We have scales where I work. I weighed my 2019 Tundra Platinum. It had Line-X bedliner, soft tonneau cover, and running boards. With me in it, full tank of gas it weighs 6,440 pounds. I also weighed it at a Pilot with Cat scales right after filling up and got pretty much the same number.

The very thing people complaining about needing to go on a diet is what makes it the best tow rig for a 1/2 ton pickup. It has 500 to 800 pounds in weight in the competition.

I'm curious if it weighs so much more because it's over built compared to the others or if things like the aluminum bodies etc save that much. My thought was that the Tundra could go on a diet so that adding a battery pack for the hybrid would not increase the weight of them that much.

When GM went to aluminum, it reduced their weight by about 450 lbs.

GM changed everything on their trucks that's hinged (and possibly the roofs as well? Can't remember for sure) to aluminum in 2019.

Ford went full aluminum, GM went just the hinged pieces. So any easily replaced pieces they have aluminum. It's what I'm hoping Toyota does with the Tundra. That way you don't need to worry about fixing aluminum, you just replace it - something that can't be done with 1/4 panels. Throw in a composite bed and it saves a bunch of weight right there.

As long as Toyota can figure out how to do it without the roof creaking every time you go over a bump or the sliding rear window leaking.

Fully boxed frames from the competition as well as 6 lug hubs. Take that for what you wish.

I am not a fan of aluminum but I’ll be damned if it isn’t lightweight.

I miss iron block, iron head, gas engines. The threads never came out with the bolts and they were cheap and easy to rebuild.

Ski-doo released the first facory 2stroke turbo last year. It makes 0 psi at sea level and full boost at 8000’ or so via a electronically controlled waste gate.
Could be neat in an automotive application being able to “turn on” the boost when needed.

In regards to the six lugs...does it really make that much of a difference vs the competition (I THINK the highest is 13k by the 3.5 Ecoboost). So 2k less...in reality you would be insane to tow 12k with an F150. Even 10k in a Tundra is a crazy IMHO. If I had to tow the max with any vehicle, ESPECIALLY if it involved highway use, I would be getting a heavier duty truck.

So what I am getting at is I don’t see how the 5 lugs hinder the Tundra when towing a reasonable weight for any 1/2 ton pickup (0 to 8k)... Just because The manufacturers tell us what the trucks can handle it doesn’t mean that you should.

That would be bs if they did, I can see Ski-Doo already got rid of the 550 2-stroke. I loved using that at work, so much better than the 600 4-stroke hair dryer they put in it now.

In my opinion, the primary advantage of 6 lugs would be the ability to find decently priced 18 or 20" wheels without having to buy from the stealership.

I am no expert, but I remember reading the 5 lugs allowed a larger lug size so it was just the same as having 6 smaller ones.

    Understandable...

If that’s the case I definitely don’t see a significant difference in going with a 6 lug vs the current 5 lugs. Aftermarket wise I can see the desire for 6 lug but outside of that...
