Does anyone have a NuCamp Cirrus 620 camper?

My wife and I are considering a Cirrus 620 camper for our Tundra for comfortable overlanding. It weighs less that 1500lbs. Does anyone here have experience with one? Thoughts?

$38K for the camper? I'd buy a $5K cargo trailer and go wild customizing it for my needs and still have money left over.

 

1500 pounds and 40k, has to be a better option? I was very intrigued when I first saw it though.

 

That will take all of, and may already exceed your payload. There are few slide in campers that are light enough for 1/2 ton truck use. Huge $ too for what it is. You could get a sick off road capable travel trailer for same or less.

 

This camper is under 1500lbs and is specifically made for 1/2 ton pickups. Cost in TX is $30-35k

 

Guys, please keep in mind, the goal is to be self-contained and off road capable.

 

Thats cool. But 1500 is over the payload of most Tundras.

 

I’m not trying to be that guy but.... that 1500lbs is dry without any fuel, water, food, clothes, etc, etc, etc. need one that’s under 1200lbs and you’ll be closer to what you need.

Made for 1/2 tons, but not a Tundra

 

This is key info. Even though the Ridge Grapplers E1 rated tires are LT rated, the added stress of higher truck weight during off-road with lower tire pressures combined with much higher center of gravity, may be asking for trouble too.
I appreciate the input, guys. I tend to err on the side of safety, and heed good advice!

Your payload capacity is 1230 lbs. That means the weight of you, all your passengers, all your gear plus the fully loaded camper has to be less than that. So even a camper that weighs 900 pounds is going to put you over unless you have very little gear. (Also, you should probably confirm that payload capacity by weighing the truck to see if the curb weight is actually 5970 lbs or if it's heavier).

There is no way to safely and legally increase your payload capacity other than making the truck lighter. Tires are just one aspect of it.

Also, anything you add to the truck like the winch, heavier bumpers, wheels, tires-that are heavier than what the truck left the factory with need to be deducted from the available payload

Others already mentioned the payload issue. You cant trust manufacturers. There will always be fine print saying you have to confirm your truck can hold it. Lance has 2 that they specifically say fit the tundra, both are 1700 and 1800 lbs dry. Only a 2wd regular cab would have that much payload. And then you wouldn’t be carrying very much gear or water.

 

That thing looks pretty sweet! But at 1500 pounds dry, plus 200 pounds for your water and waste tank, add you and your wife let's say 350, now add camping gear of 100 pounds. That adds up to 2,150 pounds and I am probably being conservative. That puts you 900 pounds over payload. GAWR is probably over also.

The only 1/2 ton I know that will be able to carry that is stripped down 2wd Ford with their trailer package or whatever they call it. No crew cab 1/2 ton will have the payload to be able to "legally" tote that around.

 

1500 or what their website list at like 1491...same difference.

Your upgraded tires don't increase your GAWR.

That looks sick, but still coming in at 1,000 lb dry it puts one over their GVWR.


If I was going to do the overland thing I would look at putting a rack with a Tepui tent on it. This one, https://tepui.com/products/thule-tepui-ruggedized-autana-3, is spec'd at 192lbs. It also would leave your entire bed available for any other gear you may need while out on the trail and even payload available to use towards upgrades such as a winch or susp mods.

 

Considering how Toyota clearly hasn't made payload a big priority, it's looking like our best bet to be able to overland, and still have some nice all-weather protection, and glamping (wife likes to be pampered) will be an off-road trailer. I greatly appreciate everyone's contributions to this thread so far.

Yes I agree. There are some pretty cool small trailers out there. Depending on how small you want to go. GEO Pro makes a pretty cool trailer that might for the bill.

BTW, I feel you on the wife. I am in the market also and wanted something very small. Looks like I might be picking up this trailer this weekend if this tells you anything......

 

Same approach here. Trying to build a combo with RTT + TT.

Logic would be that on a long trip (3 weeks+), you pull the TT to some nice accessible campgrounds and book a spot for 2/3 nights. During these 3 nights, you drop the trailer and go camping off road with the truck equipped with the roof top tent + camping gears anytime you want too.

I did the maths and I will be around +300lbs above payload when the TT is on (quite small TT, around 350lbs dry tongue weight, plenty enough for trips we have in mind).

I am planning to upgrade with Alcan leafs springs, Coahbuilder shackles and timbrens. I already have E rating tires.
TT will be pulled few weeks a year while the camping stuff will stick the year around in the truck ..

Sharing in case it gives you some ideas

I'm trying unsuccessfully to convince my wife that a trailer with bunks, a couch and a separate bedroom up front is too big and heavy. So of course she's mad at me for buying the wrong truck.

 

I was in the same boat. Needless to say the Tundra is gone and the pretty much perfect floorplan travel trailer is sitting in the driveway.
