I haven't read of anyone having a reoccurrence on the repair...

@trdlife whats your thoughts on this. It’s not wet to the touch but still curious

Unsolicited answer. If you have any powertrain warranty left, take it in and get it documented. Don't be surprised if the dealer makes light of it though. And then keep an eye on it, maybe even take photos at regular mileage intervals, say 5k.

@Wynnded it doesn’t have any warranty left and honestly it looks fine to me, however with trdlife being a master tech, just wanted a professional honest opinion, especially after reading some of the comments from people on here about not so honest dealerships. I did however purchase and extended warranty from the dealership that I bought the truck at but they are not a Toyota dealership and I feel they may not have knowledge about the cam shaft tower leak.

That's fair. It doesn't look bad at all in my opinion, but it never hurts to keep an eye on it. If you have the time and inclination though, you could invest in examining the details of you extended warranty in an effort to see if even what appears to be very minor is covered. It's really dependent on the details of that warranty.

Thanks, I have the platinum extended warranty that will cover it, it’s good for 4 years or 36,000 miles. I will just monitor it over the next 10,000 miles, which may take a year to put that much on there but that’s the exact reason I bought the warranty.

Is this covered by the 5yr powertrain warranty or just the standard 3 yr?

IMG_9539.jpg IMG_9536.jpg From my mechanic, "All engines leak, eventually. And, it may turn into a bigger leak somewhere else if you fix it", as in my case. Now, if your vehicle is still under the REAL Manufactures warranty period then hold them accountable for that leak and any other leak as a result of repairs...you can "extend your leak warranty". If your warranty is not really clear or some kind of junk warranty than that is between you and a lawyer and them. If you know for a fact you are out of warranty and you are facing the issue of repair, selling, keeping it, or whatever then you have to make a decision too. In my case, I have dealt with the leak for many years. So much so that I call this my 365 day Oil change because, I am adding about a quart every 2 weeks.

Now, the real question to those who have leaks...

ARE YOU USING SYNTHETIC OIL? I AM. I am using Royal Purple and have been since the first oil change. I read that it does cause leaks AND then I read that it does NOT cause leaks! I am going to switch to the most basic, Conventional, Mobil1 5w20 Oil and do 3 oil changes over the next 15K miles and see if my leaks at least decrease some or hopefully go away completely. I am concerned that the change over from synthetic to conventional may cause damage but maybe that is just my personal worry because I am reading it will not cause damage.

My truck runs strong. It cranks everyday and is as peppy as it was the first day. The only thing that does not work are my door locks...AND It LEAKS! I decided to keep this truck. It now has almost 450K, all original minus the basics. Its cheaper to keep her.

Why would the oil formulation affect if your seals leak or not?

I think it stems from the days of yore when seals were made from a different material.

I'm no auto expert and do not claim to be but in my researching data and talking to sports car owners, the common factor is Royal Purple and other Synthetics are quoted as "thinner" oils. They are also quoted to be "cleaners". The other claim is that conventional oil is less likely to leak because of buildup. I have stretched oil changes out as far as 12K miles between intervals. I gave it plenty of time to build up and my last course of action is switching to conventional for about 15 to 20K miles and see what happens.

For the record, the first leak ever was actually where the oil filter housing bolted to the block. My mechanic told me not to mess with it and it was no big deal. He further told me that putting a stop on that small leak will cause a leak elsewhere. He was right.

Also, for the record, I have followed the maintenance schedule all the way...I am on my 4th book.

There is no "buildup" in new engines and very small percentage leak with few thousand miles on them and many haven't leaked for hundreds of thousands of miles using the same or similar "synthetic" oil.

I thought Mobil 1 was synthetic? Isn't conventional oil dyno oil? Am I missing something here?

Also, for those that have leaks and the dealers are doing their oil changes, how do we even know what type of oil they are using, and does it matter? I'm just wondering what difference does it make what type of oil is used, these are modern vehicles and any recommended oil should work. This appears more to be a Toyota manufacturing or process issue.

Correct. All Mobil oils are either synthetic or synthetic blend. No conventional.

This is interesting. I have run Royal Purple also since 18k when I bought. Now at 182k with a small leak passenger side. Maybe just a valve cover, but never had to add oil in between changes. Performance has not suffered. Would performance suffer if it was a cam tower leak?? Nobody has an answer to that one as far as I know.
Keep us posted & let us know how this experiment turns out!
And BTW, at 450k your allowed to leak oil!

Dropped off at the dealership today. They are going to do both sides. In top of this, they found the timing chain cover and rear main seal also had a leak. Just tripped 19,000 miles. I'm starting to get a not so warm and fuzzy feeling about long-term reliability. Maybe I'm wrong, this seems like pretty major repair for this low of miles.

Man I hate that but at least they found everything and will take care of you and nothing out of pocket on your end. Even though I am still going back and forth with Toyota this is still the best truck I have ever had. I have no doubt it is more reliable than any Ford, Ram, or Chevrolet out there. I have owned all three and wasn't impressed. How long is the dealership going to have it?

Sorry to hear. I agree with you, though. Obviously for the most part these trucks are very reliable, but this major of a repair opens the door for other issues while they have the engine opened up, which was the case with my 2018. Just be careful on this forum talking any negativity about Toyota reliability for fear of being flamed.

anytime you do a major surgery it's possible that something can go wrong. I wouldn't like a major engine work on a new car.
what happened to your car or do you have a link?

My trucks going in for the repair with 59,850 miles on her, Tried to get my dealer to do both sides while they are in there. They said to call corporate, gave them a call they were super cool. Waiting to hear back monday if they are going to do the other side also. My dealer was a bit of a pain in the ass about this at first.

2017 Super White Tundra Platinum CM
Just stumbled upon this thread and decided to go check mine out. Recently purchased a 2017 Tundra with 77k miles on it. looks like I have the issue as well :(
Only warranty on it is a 3 month warranty from the small dealer I purchased it from. I’m sure it wouldn’t be covered or a huge hassle/fight to try and get it.
Is it looking like I’m going to need to do something sooner than later?? Sealant appears to be black, yes?
