My 2018 with 41K on it just succumbed to the dreaded tower seal leak. Will be covered under powertrain warranty.

At the Toyota dealership today they had 5 used Tundras on the lot and 3 of the 5 had a leak. This one being the worst.

Dang, what bad luck! Because we all know this isn't a widespread issue, right?

Now mine is at the shop and I had them check it out since I noticed a small pass side cam tower leak. They came back and said it’s valve cover... I am at 59 months on warranty. What should I do since they are saying it’s a valve cover leak and not cam tower?

Have their been any 19-21s that have had the leak? Just wondering if the issue was ever corrected

Okay, but what years and how many miles? That pic doesn't look like it's from a 2020 with 5k miles.

Never said it was? Don’t know the mileage, didn’t care enough to check and shouldn’t matter. Oldest was a 2017 newest was a 19.

They all will leak eventually, including yours. Just a matter if you care enough to have the seals replaced. Most people don’t even notice or know what to look for. Luckily mine at 37k is just a small leak from the valve cover (for now) and getting replaced under warranty next week!

Is it proven that all Tundras will leak eventually?

Based on my observation and talking to my Service manager, yep pretty likely! Love my truck, personally won’t buy anything other than Toyota but nothing is perfect.

Well, fixing to pull into dealership with 63,000 on odometer and get passenger side cam tower checked...fingers crossed they do the right thing.

I just got denied by corporate. Can anyone out of warranty detail exactly what they said to get this covered? I was told that this is not a known issue and that unless it’s for a recall or under warranty there’s nothing they can do.

They are jerking your chain saying it isn't a known issue. When a thread has 83 pages and counting with this issue then it is what it is. A recall on this would be devastating so they handle it on a case by case basis.. Mine is being reviewed as we speak and I am only 3000 miles over 60,000. I see yours is a 2011 so I can see where their loophole is with you. If I were you I would try to negotiate with them on covering some of it. Good luck.

Yeah, that's what they told me, along with the likely hundreds of others that have bothered to contact Toyota directly. My dealer claimed they see one or two of these per month, so it's obviously BS that this "isn't a known issue". Pretty despicable.

Your truck is 10 years old. I think it's crazy you're even trying to get it warrantied.

Any engine will leak eventually, seals don't last forever. My 2014 with 210k miles isn't leaking. Guess it's the luck of the draw.

I just checked mine, 2019 with 18,700 miles. Can you tell from the pictures if mine is leaking. This is the drivers side. You can see where I wiped my finger across to show.

It might just be dirt, but based on the fact that the FIPG sealant looks wet in that area vs the relative cleanliness of the surrounding area I'd say you're the newest member of the club. Sorry!

I would certainly go in and have that documented by the dealership.

I agree with Buckwallace, welcome to the club. That area should be completely clean. At least you are under warranty, hopefully they will do both sides while they have the engine pulled.

Is there any chance this could be called a wear or maintenance issue? Just bought a 2020 with 50,000. Thankfully I bought the extended warranty and was told it is exactly like the new vehicle warranty. If it is occurring by chance I want to be sure I say or do what is necessary to get it covered if it is leaking.

Haven't heard of any dealerships calling it a wear issue but some have called it a "seep" or "weep" and said they won't fix it until it's actually a "leak".

In my mind, to call it a wear or maintenance item would suggest that there would need to be a schedule or regimen for the item (the sealant) to be cared for (serviced) or a replacement interval.

So... they are fixing the leak on your "cam toner"?

Yea I know. But it enabled me to buy it at an affordable price. $33.5k don’t think I got hurt too bad given the aftermarket add ons it had.

I'm taking it in today to have it looked at and confirmed. What are the chances of having the same issue again again down the road? Should I look into an extended warranty?
