Radar detector/rear view mirror wiring

Hey all. I recently bought a radar detector, and I hate the power cable coming from the cigarette port. I bought a direct wiring kit to pull switched power off of the rear view mirror. Has anybody tackled this in a 2019 TRD Pro yet. I have a multi tester, so I can figure it out. But was checking to see if anybody had some insight.

 

I’ve always run direct wire tapped off one of the cig fuses. Never done it off the mirror.

 

I tapped into the accessories fuse using this fuse tap and then run the other line up into the detector without losing any existing accessories.

$19 on Amazon. Took literally 4 minutes.. From Radar Mount on Amazon. The wire to the cigarette lighter plug drove me crazy for 8 months....

 

That is the exact one I bought. Same exact year and model of Tundra. Do you remember which wires you tapped into?

on my 2016 platinum, i tapped ignition power from my mirror wires. Blue = 12v + and white/black = ground. I used it for my dash cam.

 

I had to grind down the terminals in the mirror tap to get good contact.

 

Works like a champ. I can’t tell which wire it is without removing the whole setup. Voltmeter and 4 minutes.

 

They come with smaller adapters. Make sure to use those.

 

I had one of these many years ago but found it never worked right. Have they improved to actually detect police before i get tagged for a ticket lol? it would go off around automatic doors at stores and a lot of other random things that didn't matter to me and my speed.

 

It really depends. They do a good job when you listen to them. The gps is now updated with live alerts and stored speed traps. although I was pulled over recently while ignoring it. I was given a warning, I believe because I admitted my fault and was totally respectful.

 

Anyone know if there is constant 12v at the mirror plug? I forgot to check and now I want to wire up my dash cam for parking mode. Lazy to run wires all the way down the dash.

 

Done deal. It was easy. The Red is +12 switched power. White/Black stripe is ground. Didn't try searching for constant power for the dash cam. There were 5 wires total, so 2 of them are accounted for. I'm curious, I'll look into it tomorrow.

 

Retired P.O for what's worth they are a waist of money. Police units always ahead of store bought when it comes to tech. Plus if stopped for speeding most officers will write you no hope for a warning.

 

Got a warning 3 weeks ago speeding in a construction zone, while it was on, still buzzing when he walked up. I was super honest with the officer and very respectful. I think being honest and respectful is the key... It's really used on the HWY for me.

 

I do totally get what your saying, cause I've never trusted them 100%. Yes, attitude is key regardless.

 

Sounds like you need a better understanding of how radar detectors work, the different radar and lidar technology cops use to obtain speed and what radar detectors can't detect. Also helps to know what radar guns your local police use.

I apologize JMN, I never looked into it after all. I didn't want to run down my battery with constant 12+. I keep mine on switched power.

I went the add a fuse way from underneath the drivers footwell and just hid and ran the cable up. Got an awesome floating mount for my V1

 

Resurrecting this thread from the dead in lieu of making a new thread. I have a V1 Gen 2 and was planning on getting the BlendMount and Mirror Tap for that. I also am planning on installing a dash cam and want to get the Donger USB adapter to power that. Here's where the question is. I know the mirror tap has an inline fuse in it, curious what you all think about running both Mirror Tap and Donger at the same time splicing in Pwr/Grnd into the donger adapter at the picture shown. I don't want to blow fuses or melt anything down.
