It looks like there will be driver's side grab handle. That's one of the check list items.

    Sure it's realistic.

Occasionally I could load additional weight (gear) on some trips if I had higher payload with the Tundra. It's easy to gain TV & Trailer weight on camping trips if you're not careful, fire wood, gen-sets, Kayaks, solar panels and it's important where it's loaded.

Also use an electronic sway device because a sway device is required for trailers over 2000 pounds.

Weigh-in at a CAT scale with empty trailer water tanks, ready to camp with trailer connected, full Tundra 38 gallon fuel tank, and two people on board for local camping trip. A WDH is not required loading the Tundra as per Tundra operator manual as follows.

    Tundra front axle: 3420 pounds
    Tundra rear axle: 3460 pounds
Trailer wheels: 4440 pounds (Trailer tongue weight on TV)
TV & Trailer combined weight: 11,320 pounds

I think you misunderstand what I am saying and the recommendation that I highlighted. WDH is recommended if your trailer is more than 50% of your GVWR (Truck only), not your GCVWR (truck and trailer). The highest GVWR on at 2007+ Tundra that I am aware of is 7200 lbs, so you'd be looking at a WDH recommended on a 3600 lb trailer.

With the recommendation of a WDH for any trailer over 50% of the TV's GVWR you would have to have a 15,000 lb GVWR to bypass a WDH on trailers up to 7500 lbs. That's not a realistic ask.

Did not misunderstand, my Trailer weighs in around 4900 to 4950 pounds when not connected to the Tundra and is over 50% of the gross weight of the Tundra. It tows like a dream behind the Tundra at any speed tested without WDH, but some trailers would need a WDH as per your document recommendations due to suspension, loading, length, ect.

A friend purchased a new 2019 or 2020 GMC Serria 1500 1/2 ton pickup a few years ago. He showed me his operators manual and I was surprised to see the WDH requirement to be higher than my Tundra. I remembered it as 7500 pounds, but after checking the following link found it to be 7000 pounds, my mistake. Always wondered if GMC could do it with a 1/2 ton pickup, why can't Toyota.

Any increase in WDH weight requirement would be fine with me on new Tundras along with increased payload. .

Check out page 17 lower RH page notes. SAE J2807 standard has probably been superseded by a later standard.

Ah, I see. I am a bit more conservative and would use one long before the official requirements. Honestly, I'm not sure what the Tundra's current requirement for a WDH is. I just use the 50-60% rule of thumb.

I believe the manual recommends a WDH if your trailer weighs over 5000 lbs, so a bit higher than the 50% of GVWR.

Nah, that's just an old 2013 cab they used for the test mule. They'll actually remove the passenger and rear handles in the production versions for weight savings.

If Ken Block was sponsored by Toyota this would be his truck!

    Instead, he drives this monster!

Rams payload with the max payload option is 2300 lbs . I would think Fords is higher than that .

with Toyota's one size fits all type deal, you guys are going to be out of luck to get payload anywhere near that.

they really should offer a payload package for the guys who want more

The max tow package on the Ram is 18,000 lbs and I think Ford is higher than that . But the max tow is just what it says , if you want to tow that much then you can’t take too much else with you .

Ok this makes me curious...I don't have a trailer. I don't tow. I know several people who do, and I know a few who readily admit they're a bit over GVWR or GCWR but their trucks handle it just fine.

Here's my question: do you know anyone who has had to pay a fine for being over GVWR or GCWR? Like they've been forced onto scales and found to be overweight and had to pay a fine? In a non-commercial half ton pickup? I'm not saying they're not out there; I've just never heard of such a thing.

The only people I know of who catch any grief whatsoever or have to weigh their trucks at all are guys driving commercial trucks with DOT weight numbers on the door.

What laws are there exactly for Joe Schmoe in a Tundra pulling a 28' trailer that puts him over payload? I would think that if our door jambs were the law, then we'd have mandatory checks just like commercial trucks do.

    Still hoping

I know around here recreational vehicles are exempt from having to weigh in at the stations on the highway. But I think folks are concerned about what type of questions will be asked if they're in a collision. I think that's a little paranoid as I suspect the average cop or insurance agent wouldn't even think of GVWR, GCWR or payload but I still wouldn't overload my truck simply for safety reasons.

Laws applied manufacturers and their ratings. The US is obsessed with regulation and manufacturing has to meet requirements that keep lots of products from reaching our market. Like, for example, the Hilux, diesel Jeep Renegades and Ford Rangers, or VWs with a tow rating.

I don't think Toyota would ever chase "1 upping" the TRX. However competing with the new raptor isn't unthinkable. If the Tundra gets better suspension, new technology, twin turbo with added torque from hybrid system... Bye bye raptor

This is what I thought. It's not illegal to be over what the manufacturer recommends, but it's potentially (probably) unsafe and might leave you without insurance in the event of an accident.

Fully agreed on the trigger happy regs that just seem to be piling up in the US. It seems the regs you're talking about here are related to diesel. I was asking more about recreational towing with a half ton. It seems that we are left to our discretion to follow the manufacturer's recommendation (i.e., the door jamb number is not the law).

Dang. That was half the reason I was going to watch the game.

It’s 12,750 for a 1500, but nobody is gonna tow that much with a half ton safely.
