TRD Pro Exhaust: Pros and Cons?

I'm working my way through new mods to my 2016 1794 CM 4X4. The next logical upgrade seems to be adding the TRD Pro dual exhaust. However, I have read somewhere that adding the dual exhaust can actually reduce torque? I do some towing and wouldn't want to have any negative torque effects. I'm trying to understand all the pros and cons of adding this exhaust upgrade to make the best decision as it is an expensive option. Also, I'd like to remain OEM, so not really considering other dual exhaust options at this moment. I should mention too that I carry a full size 295/70 R18 spare if that matters any for possible interference. Many Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom!

 

Cons - slight lost of torque
Pros - smile every time you give your tundra some gas

 

I would go with DD exhaust in the size you like- 6, 8, 10 inch.

TRD dual exhaust does lose a little low end torque. Also, will have a helicopter "thump thump" sound/drone on the highway.

 

So I'm pretty much a novice in the exhaust world. Sorry, but what is "DD"? I'm not a big fan of really loud exhaust either.

@dirtydeeds They make exhausts. Their offering for the Tundra are dyno tested for +3-10HP and +10-20 torque on Tundras. Different muffler sizes allow for aggressive to docile sound and they come with a resonator so don't drone.

 

While exhaust sound is highly subjective, I wouldn't characterize the TRD Pro exhaust as a system that drones on the highway. Compared to my last truck, a 5.3L V8, 4spd with a 14" Mangaflow, this system is downright civilized.

 

Magnaflow....ive run them on several vehicles and Magnaflows always had the worse drone!

 

Rough cost for a DD system comparable to the TRD?

 

The TRD exhaust is a great system. It gives a nice mellow purr and is not overbearing like most aftermarket exhausts. I love mine and have 0 regrets buying it. To me, there is no drone and I still think the loss of low end torque is debatable. I'm with you on keeping it OEM. Give Keith over at @dirtydeeds a call and he'll be more than happy to talk with you about exhausts. Dude is top notch and will gladly answer any questions. If TRD didn't offer an exhaust, I would have gone with him hands down.

I had the stock exhaust at first. I tried to be economical and did a muffler swap with a Magnaflow muffler, DISO. I must have spec'd the wrong muffler because the drone was UNBEARABLE!!!! Over the years, I've had Flowmaster, Magnaflow, Borla, Gibson, and TRD with TRD being my favorite on both a Tacoma and now my Tundra. The style isn't my top choice but I love that it's a true dual exhaust- awesome design the helps your engine get rid of exhaust gases more efficiently. Also, I prefer a straight through muffler sound (Magnaflow/Borla) over baffled and chambered (Flowmaster/Gibson).

Many Thanks for yours and everyone's input. It is very helpful to learn from other's experiences. I don't know enough details, but a friend of mine had Borla dual exhaust on his '08 Tundra with 5.7L and said he hated the constant "drone" so I've wondered the TRD exhaust might be similar. Seems I need to give Dirty Deeds a call and do more research on this site.

 

The whump whump whump helicoptering became annoying enough that I ditched mine and went Corsa.

 

BTW, thank you and all the fine current and former military folks on this site for your service!...so under-appreciated in our country today.

 

^THIS^! That’s why I went with D&D on my 2007 CrewMax! That “thump, thump” is annoying, and there IS a drone at highway speeds. He offers or did offer his version of the TRD exhaust. Had 2 resonator tubes built into the system, no drilling a hole etc. Practically no drone, almost non existent. I loved it! I’m looking at what he has to offer in the same design for the 2021 CrewMax now.

 

Yes, if you already have a bit of a lead foot, the TRD dual exhaust will make that worse. Much worse in my case, but I didn’t buy this truck for gas mileage. And you are entirely welcome.

 

When I did mine on my 2007 CrewMax it was around $1k shipped, BUT I still had to get the tail pipes. I bought the Toyota TRD tailpipes. So I ended up with about $1500 in the exhaust, all stainless mind you. But I see he now offers the TRD replacement and it includes tail pipes that he makes with them and all for around $1k. One and done!

 

I haven't called yet, but do you think the TRD replacement is closer to either the 8" or 10" "standard" or something completely different?

 

The 10” is pretty much the same as the TRD exhaust. That’s what I bought back then. I see he offers a 12” now, which should be even quieter.
