What do do with OEM radio and amp?

Hi Folks,

I replaced my factory JBL system radio (CD changer and tape deck) and amp with some aftermarket equipment. What should I do with this equipment? I don't ever plan on re-installing it. Are folks ever looking for OEM radio equipment?

That's what I figured. It's just hard to throw away since it works great. Unfortunately, no Apple CarPlay or back-up camera.

 

Mine’s been sitting in my closet for the past 10 years. The idea was to put it back in when I trade out but now the replacement radio is on the way out!

I still have 6x9 triax speakers from the 80s that sound awesome but no vehicle that fits them. Also a sentrek bass boost amp with equalizer when those were popular.

 

I sold the JBL amp out of my 06 Tundra to someone on this forum for $75 about a year ago. A quick ebay advance search shows the most recent sale of the same amp was $124 w free shipping

My stock JBL unit is staying in a box in the attic, I'll put the JBL unit back-in if I ever sell /trade in my Tundra. Then, I'll sell my Alpine Halo9 separately or put it in my son's Tundra.

Same here..
Stock Entune HU and amp, front door and dash speakers all in the attic in my big TOYTA bin..
I'll have to buy some cheap rear door speakers, I ripped out the stock ones and used the bracket for my Focals.



I'll stick it all back in if I sell or trade the truck.
Everything is pretty much plug and play.

Question... Is it a good idea to bypass the stock JBL amp? I was going to when I replaced my HU and speakers. when I went to car toys they told me not to bypass it. I listened to them and kept it but after everything was installed it sounds like hot garbage. It sounds worse than it did with the blown door speakers.

 

yes it will sound better if you get rid of the amp. The JBL amp is putting out 2 ohms to the door speakers and your aftermarket headunit and speakers are most likely 4 ohms. The factory JBL amp that was in my 06 Limited was 6 channels and your aftermarket stuff is 4 channels.

The Metra bypass is what I used. The Metra bypass harness is used for about 10 different toyota models so you have to pay attention to what wires are used and not used for the Tundra.

 

what did you end up replacing it with?

 

Hold on to it, sometimes peeps want to go back to stock if they sell, pretty easy to go back if you have the oem stuff.

 

I sold my factory stereo on ebay, tape deck and all. But that was 8 years ago. I imagine that there's not much of a market nowadays. But it's free to list and test the waters.

 

I just sold my HU locally. 18 w Nav for $200.

 

I've used old car radios as a "shop radio". Seemed better than the bin. Of course nowadays, we just transmit our phone to a Bluetooth speaker. Maybe a free ad, just in case someone can use it. It certainly has little value.

 

Hi folks thanks for the replies. I might see if someone wants the OEM deck and amp. It will be a while before I sell the Tundra...if I ever do. At that point, I’ll probably sell the aftermarket deck with the Tundra.

I ended up replacing mine with an

$310 Alpine ILX-W650 7" Double DIN Touchscreen Digital Multimedia Receiver with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

Alpine ILX-W650 and an Alpine backup camera. Lots of great options out there. This one gave me the features I wanted at an acceptable price point. I bought a USB port that mounted into the factory switch blank on my lower console and plugged in the USB cable coming out of the deck. Also used a Maestro adaptor to integrate the steering wheel controls.

i tried to integrate the factory amp but the adapter made the system sound terrible. It had a gain adjustment but it never sounded good. So I bypassed the amp and ran it off deck power. The amp bypass harness is a good way to go if you don’t want to cut factory wires.

One of the rear speakers had a detached spider and had a buzz. So, I replaced the rear speakers with JBL drivers my buddy had. I had to make some minor mods to the OEM speaker bracket but was able to reuse the little gasket on the the back of the factory speakers. It sounds great to me.

I left the front speakers which are 2 ohms and the rears are 4 ohm. So, this runs the deck amplifier a bit harder but I’m not too concerned. I don’t listen to music loud enough to run it too hard but loud enough to enjoy it! With a little fade to the rear to compensate for the 2 ohm/4 ohm difference it sounds great.

I might add the Alpine power pack to try to capture a little more mid-bass. That probably better approximates the power from the factory amp...but it really does sound pretty good to me as is. I’ll snap some photos of the camera and USB mount.

 

How do you like the focals ? And did you do tweeter?

 

No tweeter on the rears, the dounle cab doesn't have a place for them.
The rears don't do much, just a little fill.
I hardly notice them and no one rides in my back seat, except the pups.

But I do love my Focal PS 165FX component fronts.
I bought OEM JBL door sails and modified them to fit the Focal tweeters.
Ended up disconnecting all 3 dash speakers and still have a great front stage presence..



If I had it to do over again, I would mount the crossovers under the passenger seat where the amp is.
The crossovers are fine in the on the door, but I'd rather have them out of the weather under the seat.





I paid over $500 for them 5 years ago.
Crutchfield has them now for $358.
They are awesome speakers..

I installed a 5 channel amp.

Yes, everything you need, except the amp power line from the battery and the amp ground wire somewhere under the seat, is under the passenger seat.
Speaker in (font and rear from HU), speaker out (to front and rear door speakers), remote on to turn the amp on, etc...

If you are trying to keep the stock Entune radio, you'll need an amp that accepts speaker level inputs or some kind of LOC (line out converter) to make speaker level into low level RCAs.
If you are running an aftermarket head unit (the better option), you'll need to run 3 pairs of RCA cables from the HU to the underseat amp.

You can use this adapter to help you make it plug and play without cutting any stock wiring...

There are several threads that can help with the wiring.

I'm using an after market Kenwood HU (RCA cables run) with an Alpine PDX V9 5 channel amp.
I have a JL Audio Stealthbox under the rear seat for a subwoofer in my DC.





Even if you now have no intention of adding a sub, I'd suggest a 5 channel amp.
If you are going to the trouble of adding an amp now, you will indeed eventually what some kind of sub.
Even if it is a small one under the driver's seat.
You're going to want a sub of some kind.

 

Im doing pioneer double din. 6.5 JBL Components all around. Mono amp with my alpine type r 12. Ran power wire to distribution block. Using 2 amps. Just trying to figure out how that harness works. Im guessing it plugs into the 10/12 pin oem harness then other end to channels on amplifier?

Since you are using RCA cables for input to the amp from the HU, that harness with give you wiring to your door speakers (if you are not running your own) as well as your remote on for the amps.
I can't remember what plug does what.
I actually had to make my own harness in 2014, your couldn't buy them premade.



I also bought some JBL door sails and put my front component tweeters in them..
