Payload overload for 1 mile

Can you drive the truck around back and use this thing? Snag a google 20% off coupon and this thing will save you a half day work for under $30. I’ve used it for over two years now on full yards with an extremely rough Line-x.

The “competitors” aren’t abiding by the same towing standards that Toyota is.

Edit: I don’t believe ford and GM are following these same standards.. especially on their half tons but Toyota is.

I saw the new Chevy 1500 commercial which states something like 13,100 towing cap and rolled my eyes.

 

It's a mile, it'll be fine. My dad buys a pallet of pellets every winter and it's a 5 mile drive and he's done it for 15 years with no issue in his 1st gen.

 

I got an extended warranty so I won't wait that long lol..

 

I don't understand all the controversy. Payload is not a magic number where if you go over by a few pounds the springs are going to bend or break, the axle tubes are going to bend and the wheel studs will shear.

You bought a truck use it like a truck. Make sure your tires are aired up go get the pellets. I buy mine by the pallet also.

 

I usually have my pellets delivered, but on occasion have had to get them myself. My last truck, a GMC Sierra was a real turd, and things broke without even pushing it to the limit, so i broke down the pallet at the store, and took a 1/2 ton at a time. Like you, i was only about a mile away, and it only took an extra hour or so without major breakage.

 

I overloaded my 02' AC with a ridiculous amount of bluestone from a salvage house. The rear springs were pinned to the frame, it was a terrifying drive and I said never again. I rented a Home Depot trailer and went back and packed even more stone on the trailer and towed it like butter. Absolutely, recommend this for long term, but it is worth doing the first load with the truck and you can decide the pain you want to put your truck through. 1 mile is the only reason I would even consider saying yes to loading the truck once. If your springs are pinned... Rent for multiple runs.

 

PCJ, its not just a few extra lbs. 50 bags @ 40 lbs. a piece equals 1 Ton. If you feel comfortable with this, be my guest, but i think its bad advice.

Yeah, but your truck isn't rated to carry only 40 lbs. You might be 200-500 lbs. over depending on your options. You can do whatever you think is right, but I own a truck and know how to use it.

 

I'm going to quit now lol.

The Tundra is a 1/2 ton rated truck. We know it will do way more than that.
Yet your trks no spring chicken, so rent a trailer or borrow your friends trk and smoke a ham or turkey for him. 2000lbs = 1 Ton

Lol, it took ya long enough

 

I filled my bed with sand and drove half a mile off road (rotted fire road) and 3 miles on streets to my brothers house. Factoring the wheel wells and tool box I think by cubic feet it was 2000 lbs or more. Dug it by hand and unloaded by hand when I had stock leafs.

 

Good rule of thumb on the early 1st Gens is when you are loading your bed with weight to keep an eye on your bump stop to frame distance. When the distance closes to about an inch gap is then your weight is at the 1600lb mark (which happens to be max payload). I know this from mucho experience. Trust me on this.

Please pay someone to deliver your goods if you need to go over your max payload on your truck. Its not worth taking a chance.

 

2k on a Tundra will be fine and if you want to save the springs just throw on some sumo springs and roll on.

 

Uhaul trailers start at $14 for 24 hours... the Tundra should have a hitch already... why overload???
The big open top utility trailers they have have a 3400 pound weight cap, those are 29 a day.

 

What exactly are you worried about happening though?

I'd mainly worry about damaging my suspension (shocks and leaf springs) and differeial. But also the transmission and possibly engine if you drive hard.

I do actually haul a 1 ton pallet of pellet in my 2014 Tundra 2 or 3 times a winter now that I have 10 ply tires. I only have a few miles to travel from the store back to my house and I just go slow. The tires have greatly improved the stability of the truck under heavy loads.
