What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Not sure it will apply to all you folks, but I had a noticeable gain in low end torque when I got rid of my side pipe for a full tail pipe.

 

So the 89 pickup someone said they had is actually a 98 extra cab taco. If I can get it for less than 1000. I’m grabbing it.. then I’ll deal with shipping the freebie frame from Cali for it.. might be making a 2.4l 5 lug taco a 3.4l 4x4 here shortly... with parts that I mostly have already.

What’s the story on these center caps. They custom or do the trd caps push through and fit the method wheels? I’ve got the 304’s and really not a fan of the cap sticking out. Method sells the flush caps but some trds would be even better

I applied Fluid Film the other day. Super impressed. You would never know this truck is almost 15 years old!

 

Today's scrapyard finds:


•Passenger lower seat cover, looks real nice for $13 and I need to put the heated seat pad in anyway.
•Intake manifold and plenum gaskets. I'd never put used gaskets in my truck, just need them as I threw away the old ones and plan to sell the old engine as complete.
•Hood struts to replace my squeakers.
•Alternator, knock sensor, and O2 sensor (the one I frantically posted about) harnesses to crimp in.
•Oil pressure sensor bc I accidentally sold the old engine's one.
•Rare strut bolt to restore and sell.
•Radio brackets since I highly modified mine and will eventually replace the head unit.
•Extra coil packs.
•Visor screws for @des2mtn (not pictured)

$38.

I'm hopeful I can get this engine wire harness back to working condition. It has proven one of the most fragile parts of the engine replacement process.

 

Wow! Those coils look new. How many miles on them?

 

No idea, I tried to find out but the truck didn't have any indication on it. The frame was rusty though and everything looked pretty high mileage. That could just mean abuse, though.

 

Went out after coffee this morning to stretch the Hands and put a couple drops of 3 in One Oil on the Throttle Thingy with a toothbrush. This stuff is wonder oil.

 

Installed a quick release fire extinguisher today.

 

Loving that detailing. Could one just use WD-40 for the same purpose? I believe you recommended it to clean the manifold.

 

Thanks. I’ve tried a few things like oil on a rag, and Aerospace 303, but this 3 in One works good on the Power Steering case, the Thermostat Housing and adjacent pipe, and this Throttle Thingy. They’ve never been cleaned before using this so maybe its the first time look?

I’ve tried it on some nuts that had some rust and it makes it disappear over a few days. Didn’t make a difference on the Manifold today. Its probably as good as its gonna get after all the shtuff on it.

Never did try WD40.

Here is the PS Case I did last month. Still looks just like this. Used to be a dusty rusty brown look. A couple drops on a tooth brush and just scrub it on.

Yeah its freaky green. Its a Gates Heavy Duty. Weights almost double the Continental one I had on there before.

 

Nice find! I always try to keep my eye out for those coil packs but here in Denver when a Tundra comes to U pull and pay or LKQ if your not there in a day that thing is usually picked apart. Ive been looking for a tailgate but Im always too late

 

I’ve had some for sale for a while now. Some are ok shape and some have cracks. Check them out as I dropped the price with the last nibble but the guy never got back with me.

I would be interested in the 2 coils. One of mine went out about 6 months ago (210,000 miles) and from what I read on posts here when one goes out some are ready to follow. When I come in some extra cash new denso coils will be next on the list.

 

Yeah buddy! I rarely venture up into the central Denver yards, these funds were from my go-to, Littleton U-Pull, which is a little closer to me. They are way more organized and you can see what vehicles they get in every day on their Facebook page.

 

I never knew that there was a U pull in Littleton, I will put them on my watchlist

 

The Taco got kicked outside where it belongs because of my Sunday Tundy fundy. Also it was 86 degrees today so I went back to the summer beer - Golden Road Guava Dia.



I tried using a gear puller among other things to remove the inner axle seal but to no avail. The $12 seal puller from vatozone and some elbow grease made easy work of removing the old seals. I found five bucks in the parking lot so I picked up another set of those leaf spring clamps even though they cost more than five bucks. Dude at autozone really wanted to let the cashier know his Charger was a V8 and not a V6. Now I have a clamp on each side of the axle to accommodate my broken add-a-leafs (band-aid fix). I used brake cleaner to get all of the metal shavings and gear oil out of the axle housing; spent well over an hour on the driver's side. The bearing cage from the damaged bearing put a few nicks in the axle housing, so I sanded them down the best I could. New o-ring as well.



Putting the inner seals in correctly is a lot more difficult than the Youtube videos make it out to be. I don't know if it's just my truck or what. Last night I mangled two seals trying to put them in using an oversized socket and hammer. Today I asked my dad to see if he'd have better luck, so I put the driver's seal in the freezer for an hour and after twenty minutes of working he and I got it in. He tried hammering against the base of a holesaw rather than an oversized socket. We tried the same method on the passenger's side and he ended up mangling two seals as well. We called over our neighbor who is a retired Toyota tech for his opinion and he gave up before mangling my last seal. He is going to one of his old shops in the morning to look for a special service tool so hopefully we'll have luck with that. He told me I should drop the driveshaft and clean the inside of the pumpkin while I wait for him so I think I will do that since it is not that much more work and I have the day off.

Breather mod done is also done. Took less than five minutes. Relocated to the gas tank filler area as that seems to be a low-dust area above water. I added a clear fuel filter on it in addition to one of those Dorman OEM breathers. To get the fuel line over the union, I carefully used a cigarette lighter to heat up and expand the fuel line.

Yep, apparently it is getting torn down piece by piece. It's a spectacle to see considering I've been there sooo many times.

In related news, Ted Leitner is also retiring as the Padres broadcaster.

 

Finally got my ass back in garage. Mounted the bumper I started forever ago up and got the hitch mostly fitted. Little plate and full welds on added pieces and itll be ready to go back on for good.

So I double checked my LBJ bolts yesterday. They all moved maybe a quarter of a turn or so until they were torqued so mine seemed alright. I like @empty_lords tactic of checking the torque every oil change. I might have to start doing that. Or atleast at every tire rotation.

 

Same here. And again, none would make my torque wrench click so I just stopped.

 

Interesting, mine all clicked at the 59 torque setting. I did get nervous when I saw someone posted a photo of a snapped bolt, definitely wouldnt want that to happen!
