So i have been a Tahoe owner since around 2009 to just recently and had a JL audio W7 in both of my Tahoes then converted to 2 Alpine type R 12”. So i love the full range deep bass and never had to worry about sub or box sizes. Now that i have a 2016 crewmax tundra im lost on choosing shallow subs. Back in 07-10 when i used to sell car audio the shallows were real PINGY in bass and not full range. Im sure they have come a long way and the sounds have broadened. Unless I remove my back seat witch isn’t an option I’ll never be able to get a W7 or Type R in the truck. My question is. What do y’all have? 10”/12”? How deep and full range is the bass? Brand?

Full range is misnomer. 20 Hz to around 500 Hz is as full a range of bass one can get. Some claim it goes higher, or lower, but it s a narrow range. You just need to research what the chosen sub/mid bass speaker provides. This is a good chart that shows the sound ranges.

IMO a good sounding bass, or sub bass is complimented by a balanced inclusion of the other ranges. The right speakers/subs for the right ranges is key...if I only took my own advise. I bought two ten inch Cresendo Contralto subs @ 1800watts for the punch effect:D. The first song I will play on my subs is Vive La Mort. The punchiest song I know:D

Considering what you are coming from, I'm afraid you will be disappointed. The max top mount depth for 10"s, behind the back seat is 4.5", and that is with a custom box with reliefs cut for the magnets. Not sure what the max top mount depth for 12" subs would be, but I know it will be less than the 10"s.

I see tech12v and another audio supplier have their boxes listed with a 5.5" mounting depth. I still can't figure out how that's possible but I've seen at least one picture of a tech12v box with 10w1s in it. His website even states that 10w1 or 12w1s will fit in his boxes. Trying to get an answer from Tech12v on the airspace in his boxes and what my max room is I have to work with but I haven't gotten a response yet. I also asked if he is able to adjust the port frequency if requested. Still waiting on that too.

I'm in the EXACT same boat. My last truck I had a 2.5ft^3 box and 2 12" Type R's on 1200w. That thing was absolutely bonkers. Loved the low end response. I know I can't replicate that scenario due to the size restrictions but I'm going to do my best.

I've been modeling subs in winisd using the 2.125 cubic foot of airspace that another vender lists for their boxes hoping that Tech12v can get close. I've ran the 12w1, 10w1, 12tw1, and 12tw3 for JL and the SLD12 from Sundown through the program in both vented and sealed boxes. So far, the best bang for the buck seems to be 2x 10w1 in a ported box tuned around 34hz. The low end response is pretty good. I'd be happy to share the pictures of the graphs if you wanted. If anyone has any other subs that they know will work, let me know. I'm trying to exhaust all options before I pull the trigger.

If you're used to JL w7 and alpine type r subs, it's going to be very difficult to get the same kind of bass in Tundra bc of limited space. I went through the same thing. I always had JL audio in all my cars for many years. I have tried many different setups. In my Tundra, I tried 2 JL 8w3, 2 10w1, and 2 10tw3. I also tried Rockford fosgate p3 shallow mount. They were all still lacking what I was used to. I finally settled on 2 JL 10TW3. It's still not 100% the sound I want but I'm happy with it.

If you don't mind elaborating, what were the pros and cons of each of the subs that you tried? What kind of box did you try these in? From everything I've ran, ported seems the way to go. The 12"tw subs are modeling really well. Almost so well that I have a hard time believing that it's accurate. I'm seeing just a minor increase in bottom end response in the ported 10w1s than the TWs but it's just a couple decibels at reference. Do you think any 12" subs would be better suited to what we are looking for?

I completely understand I'm not going to get that type of bass from this setup but I want to make sure I do my homework and get the best that I can.

Like build an extension off of the box behind the rear seats and run it out under them to the console? I'm toying with the idea of adding a wing to the bottom of the standard shaped box and extending it under the back seats.

Have you looked into the slim Type-Rs? they have much shallower mounting depths that I think might work for your application. They come in 12" only IIRC, but are pretty pricey. Might be the way I'll end up going, you're lucky to have the crew cab though because it gives more sub box options!

That or build a box the same height of the center console so it's like a long armrest, that way you can fit a deeper sub. There was a guy on the Taco forum a while back that built them for guys, a lot of the Xrunner crew had 'em.

Edit: I forgot they had jump seats in the back and the boxes would extend to the rear wall as a cab long middle arm rest. You'd have to re do the whole center console, but there's so much room in there you'd have tons of space to work with...

I removed the single rear seat in my tundra. I was able to bolt my box to the seat bracket. I myself did not want to be limited to the type of sub I had to use.

i plan to do that with one of my type R 12”. Im looking into making the thinnest box for it and then seeing how many extra inches I need to move the whole bench forward. Looking at all my options. Can u send me a picture of what your backseat looks like?

I thought about that but not sure if i can keep the ac vents. If i can’t i don’t want to lose them. But ya I don’t even use the console that would be a great place for one

Pioneers flat 12" subs will hit 16hz bass notes without any problem in a shallow box. The cabin transfer effect seems to lend well to them.

A perfect SQ competition curve. Plenty of treble. You are looking at 2 db per octave curve, so at 16khz it is 2 db down and at 20khz it is 4db down. That is not much. just enough to get rid of a harsh upper end.

I think he was just making a joke about the song in relation to the title of the thread.
