My Iphone8 phone functions do not work with Carplay in my 2020 JBL head unit. When the usb connection to phone is made and Carplay selected, all the Carplay apps work except for the phone. If I do a voice command to call a number it gets to verifying if the number is correct, and do I want to make the call, then I get an error message that no phone connected. It even shows the phone app in Carplay and all the contacts are listed. It just won't make the call or show incoming calls. If I disconnect the Carplay USB connection and connect my phone via Bluetooth (I did a Bluetooth pair) the phone works fine through the steering wheel controls, but of course none of the other Carplay apps work.

Is there something I'm missing? Shouldn't my phone work as part of Carplay with the vehicle voice and phone controls or no? Is there some other enable step to have the phone app work with Carplay? The phone has been paired and selected in bluetooth, but that is separate from Carplay's USB connection for enabling the phone app? I looked in carplay settings and other iPhone setting and found nothing that turns the app off/on for carplay.

On your iPhone: Settings > General > CarPlay > Your Car > “Allow CarPlay While Locked”.

    Is it on?

Also is Siri turned on? Pretty sure it needs to be.

    Thanks for the reply.
"Allow CarPlay while locked" is on.
    Siri is also on.

CarPlay can be a bit finicky. Try a hard reset on the jbl by holding the power button down until it restarts. I have had to do it twice on my 2020.

I'll try the JBL head unit reset next. Thanks
Just to be sure, with Carplay USB connection, All phone controls should work on steering wheel and voice commands correct?

    Thanks Crewmaxltd,
I did a JBL head unit reset (held the power button until it re-booted) and the phone/voice commands all work perfectly now through Carplay/USB connection.
I swear the sound is better too on Pandora music but I won't get carried away :). Sounds fuller and clearer.
Not sure how that would happen, but the reset fixed the phone app functions and I'm able for the first time to voice dial numbers or by address book name.

Gotta love this Forum for all the help and great ideas!

Just for the record, my 2020 has been flawless using Car Play... only issue I had was a bad cable.

And, a bad cable choice was another issue I ran into. Make sure it is a data cable. I wanted a short cable and grabbed one I had in the drawer....turned out it wasn't a data cable, so I ordered one from Amazon at just over a foot long.

My experience has been that the phone causes more issues with CarPlay than the head unit.

I have found always using an Apple lightning cable is the best at culling issues.

I had nothing but fucking headaches with mine.
I finally gave up on it and only use the radio to listen to music now.

FYI. After the latest IOS forced update, my CarPlay has sucked. Crappy calls, Pandora interface is spotty, the phone is very slow to respond to the JBL touch screen. Everything worked fine before the forced update.
