oil change and questions?

Folks i have a 2017 Limited Crewmax 5.7 and i purchased this early this year with 30,000 miles, its about to hit 40,000 and have a few questions. i have always changed my own oil so if i go that route what oil should i use and filter and is there anything else to changing oil than a normal vehicle? Also, if i take it to the dealership what should i expect to be charged for a standard or regular oil change?

I use Mobil 1 0W-20 Synthetic. 0W-20 synthetic is what it calls for. I use either a K&N or Toyota oil filter, both are really inexpensive. The plastic tabs on the oil filter housing do tend to break off, so many of us have switched over to the aluminum housing. You do have to swap the center tube over from the plastic to the metal housing. Its really easy. I'll link the new housing for you.

I hate to ask but what is the link to above? Is this something that has to be replaced that I’m not aware of?

 

It’s basically an aluminum, hence stronger, version of the plastic cap on the oil filter that comes from the factory.

Besides being charged $60-100, you should potentially expect a lot of other issues, depending on the dealership mechanics, I would do my own oil changes as you have indicated you have in the past, you be $$$$ ahead of the game, and have the knowledge it has been done properly.

Because I and most likely many others can tell you horror stories, about a simple thing as an oil change and what went wrong.

Ok one more question, how many quarts do you guys use?

 

7.5 if I recall correctly.

 

7.9 I think for a 2017.

 

It uses 7.9 qts. Including the filter capacity. Torque specs are on the oil filter housing.

 

Doesn’t it matter if he has Flex or non flex also? I think they take different amounts. I also “think” I read that in another thread. Let me see if I can find a link.

 

8.5 qt in the manual and in real world.

 

Toyota says 5k for flex but it is a CYA assuming you run ethanol. If a dealership did last oil change assume the oil filter cap is over tightened. If so you might tear up the plastic one so just get the metal one. Also get the filter drain hose and maybe a fumoto valve for future changes.

The motovix package here is great, I have it and makes draining the oil from the filter a breeze. Also as far as the metal cap goes, as long as its not over tightened the plastic one works fine, people tend of over tighten them and then break them trying to get them off so if you do it yourself with the plastic one just don't over tighten it. I personally run Shell Rotella 5w30 Gas Truck oil. The 5w30 quiets down the engine.

 

Also replace the washer on the bolt. Learned that the hard way

 

I have a 2017 5.7L and have put 8 quarts. I also change the filter each time since the price is cheap. I change every 5k miles. I swapped over to the aluminum filter housing recently. I've had the fumoto valve on mine with the nipple and hook a hose to it and drain straight into a big jug. It drains a lil slower, but I do the other stuff while that drains so it's no issues. Get the filters on Amazon in a pack of 5 or 10. Fumoto valve in amazon too. If interested, look on my build in my signature since i have it linked there.

 

And you can get other "bottoms" for the funnel from Motivx that fit other cars. I have one for my son's Accord as well as an adapter for my wife's Sienna which isn't threaded, but has a half-turn cap. A fixed funnel is so much easier when you're pouring from a 5qt jug.

 

What was the hard way? I leave mine since it's stuck and isn't a crush washer anyways.

 

On my 18 crew max it was leaking from the drain plug after I did my oil change. I thought I might of not tighten it enough and when I checked it was. I had to order some from Toyota and they said to replace the washer with every oil change. Had to re drain the oil replace the washer and leak was fixed. It’s like a piece of cardboard washer not a metal one.

 

There was also reports of some knock-off washers being sold on E-bay and Amazon that had sealant on them that would dissolve and then leak. Make sure the washers you get are indeed from Toyota.

 

Its metal with a blue coating. Many people, like myself have had them stick to the drain pan. Unlike some who have risk damaging their pan trying to scrape it off, i just left it. So far no issues, i do have replacements if some day it decides to come off though.

 

I work at a body shop so I do order them from Toyota. They did mention of possible sticking to the drain pan so they recommend to replace with every oil change to avoid any issues. I bought my truck used last year and it happened on my first oil change. Haven’t ran into any issue after doing it myself.

 

8 quarts of 0w-20 with a Toyota filter. I run synthetic for added assurance.

 

According to my Haynes tundra manual 2009-2017 7.9 quarts with filter.. 2018+ 8.5 quarts with filter, 7.9 w/o filter replacement. I can verify the 8.5 with filter /7.9 with out as I just bought a 2021 tundra and its in owners manual

 

Just changed oil-filter yesterday, 2016 5.7, took 8.5 qrts.

 

My 2020 calls for 8.5 quarts of 0w-20

 

I bought the Motiv kit from Amazon, the aluminum filter housing and Fumoto valve. Will do own oil and filter changes every 5k miles. Only did the first one so far, about 8.5 quarts filled truck to almost high line on dipstick.

 

I wish I had the valve. I still might buy it. I bought their filter housing wrench and it’s a very very quality made tool. Does your oil pressure gauge sit dead middle after the truck is warmed up to operating temperature? I noticed it’s ever so slightly not in the middle and it drives me nuts. Dipstick says I’m perfectly fine and I know I am it took about 8.5.

 

At highway speed, pressure gauge slightly over half, slightly under when idling. Hope that helps.
