Perhaps. I'm more of a suspension guy. I don't go huge with the negative offset. That's how a wheel and tire dude explained it to me many years ago. He said you get less when you go to a low offset wheel as the wheel is still leveraging directly on the hub while with a spacer, you've effectively put a breaker bar on the hub. With the spacer, the wheel is now applying its full torque from road force out further from the hub.

 

Well, he was partially correct, but mixed up on symptoms and effects. The spacer vs. lower offset wheels effect on hub wear is moot, both create the same geometry. The leverage he was talking about is the leverage created by the wheel on the spacer itself. Having a wheel outside of a spacer is creating leverage, but that leverage is on the spacer and the studs holding the spacer on the hub. Its what causes poorly constructed spacers with cheap hardware to fail, as the leverage is what pulls them off the hub or explodes them altogether. A true billet, hub-centric spacer with high quality studs and lugs, properly installed, is highly unlikely to fail, no more chance than the wheel itself in a catastrophic impact.
So two different conditions caused by the two different ways of moving your wheels more outboard.
Effect on hub bearings = no difference
Leverage effect on the spacer = OK with the right spacer, no good with a cheapo cast spacer from Amazon.

School me on Offset. I assumed centerline being farther out would give you more clearance from UCA’s and skid. However I’ve read multiple posts in tire wheel combos that worked on stock wheels but with , say a +20 offset, they now rub or hit at full lock...

 

The rub from a lower offset is usually from the outside corner of the tire hitting the cab mount or the front fender liner.
When the wheel is tucked in more a bigger tire is prone to the inside of the tire contacting the UCA, or skid plate, but otherwise able to turn within the fenders/outer perimeter of the wheel well. Push it out further (lower offset) and the inside clearance issues go away, but then you run into the outside of the tire rubbing on the cab mount or front fender liner as it swings past. Obviously, on the Tundra at least, raising the front end higher can create enough space to eliminate the outside rub. A lower offset and bigger tires on a moderate lift, you'll probably need a body mount chop and remove/push the front fender liner, or shim the bumper out a little to make room.

Got mine on today. Pretty pleased. Chipping away at the things I want to do with the truck. Had a little rub and removed the front little flap assuming that will take care of it.

I have 275/70 18. I had stepped up to those on my stock rims. Didn't have any rub on the stock, but the offset change did it on these.

 

I wanted close-the-loop on this thread. I finally got the Evo's installed. In retrospect I wish I had gone with gloss black but the anthracite is not bad. Still on stock tires and suspension. Just waiting on those.

 

I'll close my loop too. I went with Black Rhino Stadium on 275/70/18 tires.

Like you...I'm waiting on my suspension. Hopefully in the spring.

I run a 20x12 wheel with a -44 offset and 35x12.50 Nitto rubber. I put new wheel bearings in before hand and have no issues so far.

 

@Tundra-in-Cement, I realize this thread is old, but do you happen to have any more photos of your truck with stock tires/suspension on the Evo's? I've been trying to see how the offset is on them. Any photos showing how they line up in the rear would be super helpful.

 

I'll look for some photos as I just swapped out wheel/tire sets. I use the Evo's for summer(fair weather) and use my Alpha's for winter and off-road. This is mainly due to the tire mounted: stock Michelin's on the Evo's and Faulken WP's on the Alpha's. I can tell you that with the Evo offset it is almost identical to factory. They are really nicely made wheels and light. I recall that the Evo/Mich combo is around 74-lbs. That said, I have come to really like my Alpha's as well. Completely different styling and offset.

 

How do you sort out your TPMS setting on your dash light?… Did you put new ones in the second set?… And did you get your Evo’s at Mainline?

 

I purchased some new TPMS sensors on eBay and they worked without any issues. Yes, new ones on second set. Yes, purchased from Mainline. Since purchase of the Evo's, I had them powder coated black.

 

Yikes… Got some coin tied up in those wheels… Bet they look good tho.. Let’s see some pics… Thinking about getting a set of those.. If we ever get tires back in stock around here.. Everything is back-ordered till next year.. Truck looks great by the way

 

Thanks, I appreciate the info on the offset. Regarding the weight, do happen to know the weight of the wheels themselves? TireRack says the 275/65/18 LTX AT2s are 40 lbs, so the wheel is ~34lbs?

 

I think the Darkzero 18x8.5 + 45 offset are 33 lbs… Not sure if that is what ‘tundra-in-Cement’ has… Supposed to be a good real strong rim… Can’t wait to his with the black powder coating and big tires.
