TRD Pro Exhaust Thumping Noise?

Sup guys,

Anyone notice a "thumping" exhaust noise at low rpm's when driving?

When I am going ~35mph to ~45mph, in higher gears at ~1000-~1300rpms...the exhaust noise changes to a "thumping" noise almost as if you can hear every cylinder firing. No check engine lights, no rough idle at standstill. It's almost like a combination of a very mild "cammed" V8 and an unbalanced rotating fan blade. Sorry, it's the best I can describe it. I don't know if it's been this way since purchase, but I recently started noticing it...or is this a characteristic of the TRD Pro exhaust? My truck has 2800 miles.

I think what you are experiencing is what some people call the "helicopter" sound that some people have with TRD dual exhaust. I don't have that sound with mine but maybe because I got it used or I just don't hear it?? Some people say it sounds better after the exhaust is "broken in" so maybe try to give it some more time. I'm sure there will be others that can chime in also.

It doesn’t “need” breaking in to function properly but it will sound different and *potentially* quiet down a bit as you put more miles on it.

Best bet is to just be patient with it and see if you still don’t like it after 10-15k miles.

 

I guess I just need to drive it more....doh.

 

Certainly sounds like you're describing the "helicopter" sound - which is a trait of the true dual exhaust. It does tone down a bit as the exhaust breaks in. My experience was about 2000 miles, but you're past that (at 2800 miles) so I don't know how much more it will tone down for you. I tried an H pipe and tailpipe resonators - documented in the thread below. I eventually sold it to another member and went back to single, because I didn't like the choppiness that you described/are experiencing.

I have the same sound with mine and added a h-pipe just forward of the mufflers and that eliminated the helicopter sound.

 

Thanks for replies! So, this is normal, nothing to be concerned about? I don't mind it if it's normal, just as long as nothing is wrong or potential issue.

 

Mine is at 68K miles and I barely notice the exhaust anymore. When I first bought it I felt like I couldn't even talk over it lol. Wouldn't know without hearing yours but I bet it's fine

 

Completely normal - acoustics of true duals.

 

The helicopter sound has reduced a lot for me, I have about 3500km on the truck now, that I also added intake, not sure the intake helped or not.

 

That's what a true dual exhaust sounds like when sitting in the vehicle. Stereo V8 left bank and right bank doing it's thing.

 

I got used to it when I had it on my 19. I swapped it to my 21 and it quieter to me. Its get better with time.

 

I have never noticed a any odd sounds on the two tundras with TRD exhaust I have owned.


What I have noticed is they get a little louder and deeper the longer they are on the truck, most exhaust get louder with time as they burn in.

 

Yes, it is a common "trait" of the TRD dual exhaust. My theory is that is because of the side exit tips, creating an alternating "thump". Especially noticeable at low rpm and under mild load. Some hate it and replace. Others like me think it sounds like a symphony! I can't hear it enough.

 

The uneven firing order and lack of a crossover (H or X pipe) to merge and balance the 2 banks creates the sound. I did like the throatiness of the TRD duals, but I spend a lot of time in the 55 to low 60 mph range and the choppy resonance got tiring to me. But I totally understand why people like the TRD exhaust.

 

I drove Subaru's most of my life until the Tundra. The TRD exhaust is Subie unequal length header nostalgia from my perspective.

 

I don't have the TRD Pro exhaust but have a buddy that has it on his truck. When I ride in his truck I definitely hear the "helicopter" sound from the exhaust (which is why I went with the DD 10" BAMF system). The TRD Pro exhaust reminds me of when you're riding quads in a group and two bikes have the same exhaust and they start resonating with each other and you get almost an echo or repeating sound between the two exhausts.

@PotentPotables mentioned Subaru's unique bup, bup, bup sound. I loved that sound in my old WRX, but not sure I could handle the whop, whop sound from the dual exhaust on the Tundra.

 

Give me one more and I can throw together a dank dub step beat for all to enjoy.

Perhaps a wub wub from a misaligned wheel spacer mod?

First mod on my truck. Helped reduce the excessivly loud fan on startup.

Mine didn't go away after 15-20k miles so I replaced it with Corsa. No drone, no helicopter.

 

The added h-pipe on mine seems to be working but then I haven't driven it much since adding it. If the drone and/or helicopter sound is still there I will go with either Corsa, Borla or back to stock..

 

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate the noise (actually sounds like a mild cammed V8 when it does it). I just wanted to know if it was normal.

 

and here im about to install the exhuast this weekend...we'll see how it goes. i dont remember my '15 Pro bugging me tho.

 

Install it and drive the piss out of it, enjoy it. I enjoy mine.

Hey how has the H-pipe been for you? Thinking of adding this myself. I don't want to loose too much rumble, just some drone and pulsing at those certain rpms. Would you recommend this mod? Would you do it again?
