Wind noise issue

2004 Toyota Tundra Access cab. Every time I drive on the highway I hear a loud wind noise, it’s pretty loud to the point where I have to turn up my music pretty high in order to hear it. The wind noise seems to be louder in the middle inside the cabin. has anyone experience this? Any ideas/solutions?

 

I forgot to mention that I tried putting tape on the windshield trim to see if I stopped hearing it but no luck.

 

Some suggestions I’ve seen are to check/clean the weatherstripping around your doors.

Tuck some backer rod between dash and windshield.

Install Dynamat/Noico/Hushmat type product.

Do you have the rain guards on windows? Those add noise.

Is the whine more of an electrical/mechanical type thing or are you certain it’s wind?

What kind of tires are you running?

 

Could very well be the steering shaft seal. There's a thread about it here somewhere.

 

Thank you @jpink, I’m pretty sure it’s wind, it seems to be louder on the middle of the cabin. I do not have the window rain guards and I’m running regular all season tires.

For what s it s worth I ve owned a few cadillacs, and Lincolns, and the thing I found in common was an underlayment. I think it was tar based. It was placed in the floor, and the firewall of the vehicle. If you ve rode in these types of vehicles you ve probably noticed the quietness. There s something to be said about this approach.

Has the windshield been replaced recently? If the truck is new to you has it done this since you got it or is this something new?

When I picked up my truck (years back) they just put a new windshield in and the wind noise was bad; pushing out on the windshield made a lot of the noise go away.

I wound up replacing the windshield again and it fixed the problem.

Just a thought...

 

I have never replaced the windshield. It seems to have gotten worse, it wasn’t bad when I first got the truck. I will look into all y’all suggestions. Thank you everyone!

No sunroof.

 

OK, any tears in door weatherstrips or missing pieces? When I was cleaning the bottom of RR door in mine, I had the splash shield off and could hear it when driving around, but I knew what it was.

 

The weatherstripping is looking rough, I will start with that once I get the chance. Thank you all for the suggestions!

 

I had the same issue turned out it was the windshield seal at the bottom so it really couldn't be seen.

I didn't find it until water started blowing onto the dash during a highway trip.

 

Hello, I’m just now getting a break so I can work on my wind noise issue. What exactly did you do to fix yours?

 

I just had Safelite put new glass in it since it was cracked anyway.

 

Did windshield replacement fix your wind noise issue? I just had my windshield replaced a few weeks’ back and it seems much more noticeable on the highway.

 

In my case yes, there's still noise but most of that seems to be from the sunroof.

My windshield guy warned me about our trucks and their roof rail covers. Specifically, he mentioned by the time our trucks get to their age, the adhesive used to hold them down is on its way out. He'd had several customers complain about wind noise, and many times it's because air is either getting under the rail covers, or the adhesive in the front has come up and they're flapping around at highway speed.

I hadn't It's not really safe for you to check that yourself, so instead, try this: Take some painter's tape or packing tape , tape both channels from the windshield to the rear window. Go for a drive and see if it's still there. You can use this tape trick in all areas of the truck to check if the noise goes away after taping an area. You may also try the side channels of the windshield, the top seal of the window, etc. But the fact you just had the windshield replaced, after what dude who's been doing this for decades says, I'd suspect the roof or windshield seals first if this came right after a windshield repair.

I still haven’t fixed mine, been very busy with school but I believe I figured out the issue, my windshield upper molding/trim is not properly sealed, windshield is not original was replaced by previous owner. Unfortunately I can’t just replace the molding, it looks like it’s glued on there, most likely will have to have windshield re-sealed.

 

Easy way to confirm is to tape across the entire top of the windshield. If you're worried it'll look goofy, use clear packing tape. I prefer frog tape or blue tape because it won't leave residue, but ... quick and easy test for leaks and noise.

Gotcha. I admit, I failed to read earlier in the thread. But then I did and got confused seeing this:

 

Using a different type tape was the difference. When I first tried it I used electrical tape, got some silicone tape and that worked a lot better.

 

Ah! That's good info. I prefer the clear Duck brand packing tape for finding roof/window leaks. It's clear, smooth, and you can leave it on for extended periods without it being totally obvious. Sometimes it leaves residue if you let it bake on, but Goo Gone makes easy work of that. I'd never even heard of silicone tape before today, I've seen it used before, but never knew what it was called! (learned something new)
