Why no sport truck/ muscle trucks anymore?

Someone who needs a bed or to tow, but do not go off roading.

 

No market for it...not even Ford or Fiat and all their special trim levels.

I'd be more inclined to get a slightly used truck and trick it out. I love a good street truck...especially when others get butt-hurt with what you do with your truck.

 

Toyota still makes an RCSB Tundra, just not for North America.

With the 3Gen front ends? Are you aware of an image collection? I've never stumbled on and pictures other than the ones shops have fabbed up.

I recall you sharing those some time ago but alway thought they were one-ofs. When you said that they were still made, I thought you were suggesting current model years. Or did I misunderstand?

 

Current models is what I understand, I don't know if they are standard 2nd gen or one of the refreshed exteriors.

 

I wonder if they have Toyota dealerships there and we could browse their stock for images....

Wouldn't a lowered truck ride on the bumps if loaded/towing? Seems rather dangerous and prone to damage.

Not if done correctly. It wouldn't necessarily need to be lower either, most 2WD trucks are lower than the 4WDs of the same make/model.

I lowered the bed on mine 3.25", the ground clearance / scrub line is unchanged and I added air bags to aid in hauling & towing so I don't ride on the bump stops. The truck rides and handles great.

The picture was taken before I sorted out the exhaust.

 

Same setup here Rex and I tow my 16ft trailer loaded with my toys and another 900lbs in bed without issues and in fact smoother than my prior 15' DC. Now I have to pump my air bags to 75psi but that's what I bought them for

 

That’s if it was home made. Something properly designed from the factory would not have that issue. I remember Toyota used to make the X-Runner Tacoma with special Bilstein suspension. That was a nice riding sports truck. My good friend had one, drove across states with bed full of furniture.

Toyota actually benchmarked it with the 350z when it was developed. I thought no way, until sitting and driving my buddy’s X runner. Very well sorted.

I think a truck made for off-roading isn’t very good in terms of payload and towing. That’s why the ratings are so low. Also, It’s too high to load and unload for doing work all the time.

 

Not really unless you're talking high speed desert/crawl, but those builds are an extreme compromise. An overland build can carry lots of weight, IIRC, Deaver custom builds leaf packs with more capacity than stock.

 

Hey if Toyota comes out with the rumored twin turbo one will be able to tune it for some serious HP.....

 

Tuning up a turbo engine is costly and risky. Look at the WRX and STI world. The current 2.0 turbo in a WRX can safely be tuned for about 50 additional HP, but it only happens if you add an intake, kill the EGR, and open up the exhaust. If you start adding anymore power than that you get into the realm of needing to upgrade everything else on the car. Brakes, intercooler, internals, the turbo itself, etc. All of these come with increased risk of grenading the engine, too. Gotta pay to play. At that point, why not just get an older truck and upgrade it with a supercharger? You'll be money ahead compared to a new truck plus parts and tune.

 

Yes for sure. In 40+ years of driving i have had a number of turbocharged vehicles, most with a manual transmission. I didn't say it was a inexpensive or wise financial decision.

I am digging the peace of mind that comes with Toyota's old school, time-tested NA V8...cheers

 

Manual and turbocharged is some fun for sure! Not sure I'd want it in a truck, though. I do get a hankering for my WRX at times, but I think I'd be just as happy with something out of the Lexus performance line. I'll never be able to afford it, but I like to dream!

 

Suspension technology has improved to the point where high riding vehicles can have excellent on road handling characteristics, so not anywhere near as much demand for “street trucks” anymore. The aftermarket takes care of those who still want them.
