Thinking about getting one, all the reviews seem to say they work? Anyone have one and what's your take on the actual benefit if any?

I didn't have any luck. Purchased a netgear indoor and it was junk. I also purchased a outdoor extender and it was also junk. good luck trying to find something that works.

I've had a Netgear EX3700 for over a year and it really works well. Occasionally it may lock up and I just unplug it and restart it and I'm good to go again.

I have the Orbi mesh system from Best Buy. Works great and no more weak signal to my Ring cameras.

I have the Google mesh and it’s been excellent for over a year and a half. Personally, I would skip the “booster” type stuff and look at a mesh unit. They basically cloud your entire home with strong WiFi.

This 100% you want to connect a mesh network. Boosters are old school and mesh networks can be built for relatively cheap
Edit: except I would avoid google as they are the scum of the earth and don’t need to collect any more data. Rant over

I had a Belkin for a couple years to try and get some signal back to our bedroom area. It did an OK job but not great. It eventually died.

Since I started working at home I replaced it with a Rockspace, which works a lot better and is very good about reconnecting. I use it to boost signal through concrete to the basement. Our connection upstairs peaks at 150m on a 150m connection, but usually runs around 60. Down in the basement I get a consistent 48-50 regardless of time of day. I've been pretty happy with how it's performed. It also boosts to the bedrooms well, which surprised me since it's farther away from them than the original Belkin was.

Go with one of the mesh systems instead. I’ve never had consistent luck with extenders, as you’ll usually run into roaming issues where your device won’t jump to the right bssid and end up with a shitty signal. Mesh systems usually have logic built in that will handle all of that seamlessly. Netgear Orbi has worked great for me and you can find decent deals on the 3 pack of you check around. Google WiFi also works well, as does Uniquity if you feel like spending some money.

I agree that it will only mean heartache to try to extend an already outdated system yourself and in the last few years the cheap Mesh networking has gotten so good that it just makes sense to get a new system really.

I have only had luck using an Amplifi Mesh Point as an extender which is a feature that it was designed for too but for about the same price you can just get the intro Amplifi Mesh System and be done with it too.

    https://store.amplifi.com/products/amplifi-meshpoint-hd

They are about $100 a device and worth it.

    https://amplifi.com/instant

The real difference between all other systems and the newer current Mesh is that there are extra radios in each Mesh device to let the units all talk to one another to mesh where the older systems need to divide radio time between WiFi and talking to create the mesh network.

Because of this the older systems are about half as fast if they work to mesh at all and they are also not really less costly at the same time.

This stuff just changes too fast and it is hard to keep up with for sure but this is what I do every day and it really makes people happy that have had bed WiFi for years and just had to live with it.

I bought these two devices which linked together seamlessly to run my wireless network in my home.
Required because the router is on one of the house and the Smart TV is downstairs and on the other.
They have been working well for me ~ they've been in operation for one year now.

I had the Shaw (Canada) wifi extender pods which are exactly the same as the Xfinity (Comcast USA) xFi wifi extenders. They were successful at extending range but it severely slowed down speeds. Plus they are a monthly rental - not recommended.

Not trying to sound like an a-hole here, but your data is being mined and collected everywhere by everyone. There literally is no getting around it. Apps on your phone are listening to everything you say. This is not me being paranoid. I've tested it many times. It really sunk in one morning when I was near my wife's phone and sneezed, and a couple minutes later she got an ad for tissues on her pandora screen. That's just how it is, and there's no going back. Data is more valuable than gold at this point, and google is probably the least of your worries. I did a mental face palm the other day after giving my wife my credit card info verbally. Like, how stupid can I be? Haha

On a related note, the targeted ads related to my conversations basically stopped when I used a microphone blocking app, but it became inconvenient when I needed the mic for legitimate purposes.

But at the same time, if you’ve ever used your cc online or even at a gas station then it’s out there. I’ve read that even websites that claim they don’t store it have been hacked and the info was stolen.

I have Google Fiber, and the wireless that was provided is garbage. I bought a Ubiquiti UniFi AC Longrange Access Point and have had no issues throughout the house or outside.

Not an a-hole at all. I totally agree. And it’s not paranoia at all. I just try and avoid giving the king of data collection any more. And I agree again there’s not much you can do, but one thing you can is not put more monitoring devices in rooms in your house. I use Linksys for this reason to avoid google and Amazon. I think we’ll look back and see google is one of the worst companies to walk the earth (yes google is practically living, walking and breathing at this point). Sorry I’m done hijacking to each their own and nothing but respect

WHere do you need signal at, is it a specific spot, or is it in general?

I was speaking at a tech conference last year and was talking about how much storage the typical person generates is a single day. One of the many ways is from connected devices "listening" to everything you say, even when the microphone is off or disabled. I told a story about a conversation I had with my wife about buying a new mattress. The next thing you know, I had ads for purple mattresses in my e-mail and on web pages. After I was done speaking, a few members of the audience found me and said they had ads for purple mattresses on the mobile sites on their phones. One attendee had an ad for a mattress of a different brand.

Devices are collecting data and listening. Be careful what you do and say... some can even see you.

I very much agree with you. Have you researched \Edward $no wden? Well, if you have not, you can watch his movie and get a good idea of the technologies that are being deployed against everyone, now it is not just the government (that was bad enough...). It is also tech companies who hope to manipulate our belief systems.

It is futile to worry about your credit card getting stolen... Just don't let your debit card get stolen! if you are really worried about it, get a cryptowallet and use that to make purchases online.

I hang "Smart? TVs every day and of course they are listening and often watching every room they are in all the time too.
I try to explain to the customer both sides of this feature but most are much more interested in being able to talk to the TV instead of needing to pick up a Remote and operate it these days.

    Maybe they are just Lonely?

I’m not worried. I use my cc and have had the # stolen before. The cc company was good about taking care of it. The person I quoted said he turned off his device’s microphones but accidentally said his cc # out loud. I was just pointing out that if you use your cc, the number is out there.

Skip the extenders. I spent years chasing them between Apple/Netgear with different setups.

I finally went mesh with a Netgear Orbi and have no drops/lags/etc. I know it’s a bit more expensive, but not having to deal with the frustration of dead spots and drops is well worth it over the long run.

Google "google ledger" and watch the video. Google has not blocked the link ass of today. If you find it blocked, use www.duckduckgo.com to search for it. Google is EVIL!

I bought a "Smart TV" a couple of years ago, but it is still as dumb as ever. I just never connected it to any network. I also don't get the Samsung ads that others complained about since it has no access to the Samsung advertising network. I just connect my streaming device (Apple TV 4th gen) to it. No ads other than was is broadcast, and no sign of targeted ads.

Simple truth: if you get something for free, you are the product and not the customer. As a product, someone is paying for your data.
