Yeah, this thread has lost it's focus and is going in circles. I can see I'm going have to help you guys understand this dilemma by resorting to visual aids:



All right, all you fellows at Counter 1: If you don't have a Tundra with a real damn air-to-oil cooler with hoses/tubes leading up to the grille area, then do yourself a favor: Spend a few hundred dollars and retrofit a real ATF cooler NOW. If you haven't seen a destructed transmission on a two year old truck, what the heck did you expect?...They're covered by Mama Toyota for five years/60K miles!

All you guys at Counter 2: Quit muddying the water up for the ignorant. If you don't tow heavy, you DON'T NEED a dang ATF cooler. We know this because Toyota has already run the hell out of these trucks in the heat of the southern desert, and up the side of mountains. They KNOW they are capable without that silly-ass ATF cooler. Toyota engineers are so confident in these trucks, they have raised the OMG fluid temp alarm to 302 degrees for fluid that starts going to shit about 230 degrees! So, quit worrying, you don't need an ATF cooler...well, for at least the first 5 years/60K miles, whichever comes first. Just do your normal lifetime fluid changes, OR...as often as you see fit. You will get your reward in the end.

(Tongue-in-cheek. I already have my retrofit ATF cooler. )

 

I’ve watched a lot of their Ike gauntlet videos and will say although it’s only 8 minutes of towing it’s near max tow weight and the truck is basically at redline the whole time. I guess more of a worst case towing scenario instead of a normal towing scenario

 

When I had a TT, mine would slowly get hotter over time. Like an hour or 2. I wasn’t at max but it seems like a short spike isn’t as bad as long sustained towing.

 

Sorry, I didn’t take a picture when my 2010’s transmission went out at 59k and then the replacement one again at around 106k.

 

Exactly. Chasing problems that have not even occurred yet.

 

You speak with confidence, however I personally know of 2 “destroyed” transmissions in a tundra.

 

You can assume confidence when there are millions of these trucks on the road and the transmission isn’t an issue.

 

Well when people are saying it hasn’t happened, as in 0% failure rate, and I am at 66% failure rate (2 failed in my 2010 and 1 good one in my 2018), there isn’t as much confidence for me.

And million”s” is a stretch. 15 years (07-21) at around 100,000 a year is 1.5 mil minus any wrecked or broken ones.

Edit: yes, Toyota is reliable and there hasn’t been anyone saying their transmission caught fire because of the lack of a cooler. But Toyota isn’t 100% perfect.

External appearance would remain unchanged. Most automatic transmissions stop functioning long before enough heat and friction accumulate to cause external damage. Unless an owner specifically requested it, only AT technicians, and not Toyota techs, get to view the destruction inside. Here is a couple of videos if you want to see inside. The first is specific to a 2007 Tundra AB60F 4X4. It had to be towed in, some comments on welding of convertor neck to the bushing:

Ya your situation is a little different. I think for the general person that will google “20xx Toyota Tundra problems” they aren’t going to get anything with the transmission. It could be the 4L60 and go out every 100k on the dot.

 

You need to get out more, there is a brave new world out there! Just don't get too curious <wink>

Yes, the one in the condenser. It was built mid 10 when they made the change.

 

What's toyota's designed operating range for the trans?

 

Even more importantly, the post I quoted regarding my 2010 didn’t differentiate between years. It just said “Can someone post a picture of their overheated/destroyed transmission in their Tundra?”

FWIW the ATF is not a lifetime fluid, the maintenance cards show an ATF service at 60k.

you’ve lost two... is this a configuration with a factory cooler?

what was the root cause of the failure?

 

Had the one in the ac condenser.

Don’t know, but they said the first one had lots of metal shavings in it. It ran hotter after that, like over 250 on flat ground. Dealer said it was normal. Cooler got a leak years later and they replaced it and it ran cooler after that. I think the cooler was clogged but they insisted it didn’t need to be replaced when I had the trans replaced the first time.

 

We'll since we have included Priuses into the body of evidence...
