What condition is the cylinder that piston came out of? Almost looks like too much boost for the ring gap it had and it finally bound up and broke the ring lands. Weird it only happened to one piston and not any others?!? I'd tear into the others and see what you find. Looks like full engine rebuild is in order. Also a good time to have the block machined and go all forged internals. I'd opt for the Total Seal Gapless rings set up for mild boost/nitrous. Sorry to see it was way worse than valve seals.....I'm guessing you knew that when you pulled the engine though....good luck with it!!!

That cylinder looks good in the pics! You dodged a bullet there I think!! If no scoring or cracks in any of the cylinders, should be rebuildable. What are your plans with it now?

Yea its incredible how little wear there is inside this motor. All the bores still have crosshatching, bearings look brand new, hardly any carbon buildup anywhere.

Yes it was. Probably close to a 100 degrees. And it never really "let go." It started by puffing small amounts of smoke, then gradually progressed. That's why I thought it was valve guide seals crystallizing.

Exactly how much boost does a stock blower like that provide? I guess I need to read up on that blower...the tune should be safe enough to prevent that as long as pulley wasn't changed out.

Every boosted car I have had has started on a hot day!!

Best to leave them sitting I think. Myast turbo car had almost the same damage to the piston.

Where are the rest of the pieces of the ring channels? Did you see anything in the oil? I wonder if a ring got stuck and caused a hot spot on the piston then the rest of the damage from that? You are lucky that those pieces that were loose did not mess up that cylinder wall.

There's was no debris fortunately. The piston was held together by the rings. I got insanely lucky.

I agree, sometimes things actually go in the right direction, and not turn into a train wreck.

Got the motor in last night, cranked her up and she runs. Still have a few minor issues to work out. I'm growing weary of this project. So much time and money invested.

It is a big job, but looks like you are on the final stretch. I certainly hope it was worth your time and money. If anything you can get satisfaction out of your effort!

Snapchat-1691665101.jpg Making progress. Got a massive air bubble worked out of the cooling system, found a transmission temp sensor I left unplugged, finished burning residual oil and pb blaster off the exhaust manifolds, and road tested a handful of times. I'd forgotten how strong this thing is.

Thanks for the encouragement friends. I've kept up with most of my receipts, but haven't done a total tally. The time commitment was a bigger factor than the actual dollar cost, simply because I did all of the labor with the assistance of my father. I'll add up receipts here in the next day or two. The big ticket items were pistons, rings, gaskets, water pump, engine stand, other misc tools, consumables and access to Toyota's TIS resources.
