If you thoroughly understand how a system works, you can do things that SEEM to counter what the manual says, but you will not be hurting anything. The damage to gearing when in 4hi or 4lo comes from the wheels turning at different speeds. If you are going straight, all the wheels are turning at the same speed. If you are turning, the outside wheels must turn at higher rotational speeds because their path around the curve of the turn is longer. This is why no damage is done when driving perfectly straight on dry pavement in 4lo or 4hi.

If the manual went into this much detail for everything, it would not fit in your glove box. It might not fit in your back seat!

 

Agreed. Even going around corners in 4H on pavement will not harm the driveline. It will just increase your tire wear and effect handling.

I live in a rural area that sees plenty of snow. On snow days I use 4H on my secondary road until I hit the highway. Sometimes I forget to take it out of 4H when I hit the bare highway because I can't even tell it's in 4H. The only damage occurring is to my wallet because of the increase in fuel consumption.

 

I have noticed in my factory manual for first gens that toyota references ambient pressure, and elevation limits to certain DTCs, but there is no direct baro sensor I can find in the diag section or the dealer parts list. How does the ecu derive this value without ambient pressure knowledge? Some combination of other sensors I assume. But it has always puzzled me.

Good afternoon, I have a brake question.

every time I back out my driveway(downhill slope) my rear brakes squeak. They also squeak when Im going like 3 MPH thru a drive thru or just slightly moving with the brakes pressed.

I took it to Toyota and the guy said the brakes are perfect about 8MM left said new come at around 10-12MM

What could be causing the squeak?
he mentioned it could be moisture between the rotors and the brake pads but it Still makes the sound after driving about 15 minutes which I’m guessing the moisture would’ve already dried up

 

Moisture=Surface rust.
All brakes squeak/squeal, just not all at a frequency within the range to human hearing. Yours just happen to do so. In your case it's more of a personal annoyance and not one of a mechanical malfunction.

 

Perfect answer. I'll add that you can have some success changing the "frequency" by chamfering the edge of the brake pad or deglazing the surface of the rotors. Also disc brake quiet applied to the back of the brake pads can help.

 

Sometimes I use a small dab of silicone between buzzy metal or plastic panels which seems to me to be the same principle.

Been having an issue that every time I turn left there is a weird clanking or rubbing sound almost like if something is loose I hear it coming from the front driver side . You only hear the noise inside the cabin not outside the truck. Took it to the dealer already and can’t find anything wrong with it. Things I’ve tried to tighten up all the bolts I could get too and check for any visible rubbing or anything loose. Everything checked out. I’m open to any ideas

When you took the truck in did the dealership hear the noise? Is the truck stock?

Also is it a clanking noise or a rubbing noise?

 

So who's the mechanic on here?

 

It’s like a clanking and the dealer sas they could not replicate it which means they didn’t even test drive the truck

What causes the truck not to shift from 4hi to 4lo? Yes I stop, put it in neutral then turn the knob but nothing. When it does go into 4lo it does the same thing and does not want to go into 4hi, any help?

 

I question the valitity of the mechanic in question. What are you re qualifications? Who the f*ck are you?

 

Go to the first. LOTSOFTOYS was the mechanic, who appears to have last posted in 2018. Maybe a replacement was hired.

 

So clanking on a left turn. Does it make the noise in 4wd? Does the clank noise happen when hitting uneven surface or on a smooth surface?

Can you add a video for us to hear the noise?

 

If you must know I'm a Toyota tech that has just retired (2 months ago) and have 35 years experience as an auto tech. Any other rudely phrased questions you want answered?

I figured he was, he was answering questions like he was and the mods wouldn't let him do it if he wasn't, given the thread title.

 

Toyota related, not Tundra, '97 T100, right side of transmission, above the pan towards the front, just had transmission fluid changed dropped the pan, clean the screen out, now this is leaking, never leaked before

 

I can't remember when the last time I worked on a T100. I thought most of them would have gone to the crusher by now.

It's a coincidence that it's leaking now after the pan removal. The part that's leaking is for the band adjustment. You could remove the outside lock nut but make sure you don't change the position of the inner screw. Add a O ring to the screw and reinstall the lock nut.

 

B-b-b-but it's a Toyota.

I was serious about the T100 being in the crusher. They had a serious rust issue and most of them have turned into dust. I see he's from Texas so that probably saved it. Wouldn't mind seeing some pictures.

 

Agreed, but so did the even older Hilux Pickups and 1st Gen 4Runners if you happened to live in a disagreeable climate. As I'm sure you know, there are some regions that are very good the the longevity of automobiles. Even as snowy as it is where I live, I'll spot all the aforementioned trucks every so often, it is pretty surreal though.

 

Any chance of knowing the o ring part number?
