Hey all was just curious as to everyone's methods of recovery when pulling someone out and use of straps or ropes d rings n such...growing up i would see my dad and uncles use "reverse gear" when pulling someone out...they said its a strong gear this true? I like pulling someone out from reverse gear...back then chains were used to pull out until i saw my uncle use rope from a tug boat he got years back now its straps or those new bubba ropes which are pretty expensive I've seen D rings pop away from straps and injure someone or mess up a vehicle how or what everyone else do n use

Pulling hard in reverse is not the best option for our trucks. D ring receiver hitch and snatch strap, as per advise I've gotten on this forum.

ColoradoTJ aka Lt. Dang, was good enough to explain why reverse isn't the best for our trucks. I don't wanna give you the wrong explanation, so hopefully he'll chime in and explain it to my dumb ass again.

This is a good question, and has a lot of different answers that are all situational.

Most of us, we don't do any real serious off-road that would require a recovery or much gear more than:

    -Emergency Strap tire chains
-tow strap or tug rope (like a bubba rope)
    -Fire extinguisher
    -Clevis and hitch mount
-Telling someone where you are going and estimated time of return. Amazes me some people do not do this. I tell my wife where I am going, estimated time of return, and a drop dead time when it is a good idea to start making calls for help.
-Some foul weather gear, extra food and water, shelter.
-Spare tire, tire plugs, and an air source.

Some more expensive items that are nice to have:
-winch/maybe even a removable mount. This can be a significant cost, over 1000.00 easy and may never really use it for yourself. Then you need to buy a recovery gear kit. Depending on where you are going, there is a bit of other items that might be considered to make a winch even useful.

Now the people that don't go off-road much or on "easier" trails, that don't bring much gear are the ones I see stuck or in danger more often. Stuff happens and weather conditions change and getting stuck or vehicle damage happens easy.

    For instance:

Here is a jackass in his TJ, everything is going good, out in Moab by himself and his wife on a very difficult trail.

    CF42DA8E-8B49-4336-8227-D6FD3246FCF0_zps_9e1bb542534e19b42d6371736f3e09393d09d8e3.jpg

    About 6" more forward....

    3711CF93-DB5F-48FD-A951-BC9427B49399_zps_820b81789c1063c0dab14d5766b516b9ba087948.jpg

Well at least this jackass came prepared. This took about 10 minutes to recover. A tree strap on the large tree on the left of the picture, clevis and snatch block, clevis to rear bumper. The Jeep came over very easily and jumped in and drove back to camp.

Had this fool not had recovery gear, it was probably at least 20 miles back into Moab, UT on foot. This was in the late afternoon during the week. Nobody was out there during the weekdays in the late fall.

In a pinch, it works well. Hopefully the pin doesn't get bent in the process though.

I have heard that might happen but have never seen one bent, have you?

Yes there is...and these are easy trails. These fools would kill themselves on hard ones. Maybe they fallow GPS coordinates better than spotters.

Everyone, CARRY A HIGH LIFT JACK!!!! A few years ago before I had my tundra I drove a 2002 Tacoma. I was at school when a nasty ice storm while I was out. Trying to get back to school I ended up slidding into a ditch and flipped the truck over on its side. Several other vehicles tired to help but they all ended up getting stuck at the bottom of the two hills where I was with no traction to even think about flipping the truck back over. But I had a high lift jack and plenty of straps and chains. Hooked it up to the passenderside frame (this was the side up in the air) and then to a tree. The all I did was crank that SOB until the truck fell back on all 4 wheels, drove out of the ditch and up the hill, then helped the other who got stuck trying to help me. In that sistuation, only a high light jack would have saved me, not a winch. Below is the same jack that was on my Tacoma, I fabericated a mount that i welded onto my tool box.
