Got mine done. Took longer than anticipated but not hard. More time was spent on finding hardware and painting the crossmember than install. Installed a TRD Pro exhaust while I was at it. Don't know how to weld yet so I drilled.

Thanks to all that shared information about this install. This is one of the things that I wished was available when I bought my truck and now I have it.

On mine, I repurposed the fuel line brackets to relocate the lines.

For the 3rd Gen guys and gals, does the truck "learn" its new fuel capacity on the DTE gauge or are we stuck with the 430 DTE?

The DTE is only 430 when you first get the truck or reset the computer by rebooting the battery. Mine settled at about 295 after a while.

In terms of after the tank swap, I'll have to keep you posted as I'm still on the same tank from three weeks ago. I don't foresee it learning as I believe the computer is programmed for a max number of ~430 for the 26.4 gallon trucks. I have yet to determine if that can be modified with a tech stream or requires a computer swap.

This tank is so big that after a little over three weeks, I still have have a tank left! I finished the swap just in time to have to work from home.

Anyone one have a lead on a process to swap a 3rd gen 26 gallon tank to 38?

On my 2016 it’s easier than putting the 38 gallon tank in a second gen because the parking brake is not an issue as it’s already relocated and the holes for the 3rd crossmember are there. There are several posts on line with pictures, if you read them all, and ignore the parking brake modifications, you have all the information you need. It could be done in a day if you have everything you need and you hustle. I took my time (I’m 60) and did it over 3. I prepped the cross member in advance. The first day I removed the old tank and installed the cross member. Then I did some painting to prevent rust. The next day I was letting the paint cure and I swapped the fuel pump. The third day I put the bigger tank in, that took a couple hours.
If I had to do the whole operation again, it was go a lot faster obviously and if I had a lift it would be significantly easier, but it’s not bad and makes a hell of a difference.

An update after 3 fill ups. The distance to empty is now 330 but I'm doing a lot more city driving since the quarantine. When the gas light comes on, I filled up with 27.5 gallons.

An update on the TF 47 gal tank for those who don't have the time/skill/whatever to do the 38 swap.... I've ran about 25k miles with it now and can say other than getting rid of the stock crappy headlights this was easily the best mod I ever did. For day to day driving I fill up to about 25 gallons, for trips especially when towing it is so so so much nicer having the extra capacity especially getting 9-10 mpg. It is heavy as some have mentioned but I really don't notice any more body lean than what it already had and ground clearance seems about the same. It's also pretty expensive for a gas tank... but they truly offer a plug and play setup, everything was there. Not for everyone but it is a very well made product if you want to spend the $ and are less concerned about the weight.

very true info, the biggest concern was its not CA legal, and the 38 gal swap provided a legal way to get a larger tank.

@papasmurf do you do fabrication? If I buy 38 gallon OEM tank would you be able to put it on my 15 TRD pro? Apologize in advance if that’s not something you do… But this 26.4 gallon tank is killing me. LOL

Is the skid plate for the 38 gallon tank optional? I don't do any off roading and I am looking to swap my 26 gallon tank to a 38 gallon

It is but if you're spending the money and time for the swap, you might as well protect it with at least the basic plastic one. They can be found for cheap used.

P&P for the most part. Your tank has 2 straps, 38 gal. uses 3. You should get 3 straps from JP. I just don't know if your truck has the fixed mount locations for the 3rd strap

So I read the whole thread... So I am understanding right, I can reuse the existing fuel lines that are on my 2007 Crewmax? Without any issue? And the existing filler neck is good too? I talked to the service dept at the dealership and that's what they warned me of when doing the swap.

yup basically the only parts you really need, are tank, cross member, tank straps and pins that's pretty much the bare minimum. obviously, a skid is important, you may need a new pump retainer ring etc

Does anyone know would a 3rd gen have that cross member with a small tank? I’m upgrading and not sure if I have to buy one or if my truck has it already ?
