2016 Tundra 5.7 - Whines as in this video link ONLY when air is cold - It still whines on and off even after engine is warmed up - It has been doing this every winter for 3 years without getting better or worse - Replaced the fan clutch with no result - Thought maybe secondary air injection but the noise seems to be coming from the center of the engine not the passenger wheel well where that is. Any idea? Toyota service has not been able to pinpoint issue.

Power steering pump? I had a pump in my Honda that made that noise, only in winter. Does change when you turn the wheel?

It does not change when I turn the wheel but I am going to test that further to double check today. Oddly, it sometimes does it while driving in cold weather (engine fully warmed up) down a hill with my foot OFF the accelerator. Thank you for your help.

Mine does the same exact thing. Only when it gets around 30 degrees or lower. And only until the truck gets warm.
I always thought it was the SAI.

Does yours sound like it is from the center of the engine area like mine? I think the secondary air inj is located in the passenger wheel well area so that is why the Toyota dealer didn't think is was the sec air inj.

I’ve never really investigated it to far. It’s done it every winter since 2014 and with 126k miles now I figure it can’t be anything too concerning.

My Tundra does this as well. Also have a friend who had a 2010 and now has a 2015 Tundra, both of his made/make this noise. I don't know what it is, but it seems that every Tundra does it in the extreme cold, so I'm not going to worry.

Today my Toyota mechanic gave me the info below. The upper intake manifold was replaced today. It is going to be below 20 degrees here late this week so I will post the results.
    SUSPECTED CAUSE
IS INPERFECTION IN INTERNAL CASTING THAT IS RESULTING IN
    AUDIBLE NOISE.INSTALL UPPER INTAKE MANIFOLD.

25,000 ! It has been making this noise since new. Upper intake manifold was replaced. It was 18 degrees this AM and it made the same noise so that was not the solution.

Mine make the same noise when warming up. It doesn’t have to be that cold either. Around 50 degrees it still does it. When it warms up it goes away. Been bugging me but looks like it’s normal. Does yours also vary in pitch while it’s making the noise. High pitch low pitch?

The pitch varies with engine RPM. Sometimes it will make the noise when going down a hill (only when air is about 30 or below) but the engine can be fully warm. If I put the truck in neutral and coast it still makes the noise varying the RPM so I know it has nothing to do with the transmission. The dealer tried a bunch of things but it never stopped. Maybe it is normal like you said but it would seem like more owners would be familiar with the sound.

Was there ever resolution or a fix to this issue? I've got a 2016 SR5 that started making this noise yet again this year as the temp was in the 20s this morning. Same thing every winter. Closest dealer service folks are pretty good and think its an air injection pump issue. Likely not worth the cost of replacing and ultimately not changing the problem... Doesn't seem to be causing other problems with the truck, just an annoyance.

I'm thinking it's a idler pulley, they're a known problem. My truck has been doing the same the past few winter's. I'll be looking into this when I get some free time this winter.

My truck made this same noise this morning and my idler pulley is pretty new, did it after I changed it last winter too, I don't know what it could be.

I know the OP replaced his fan clutch, but I'm wondering if you took your fan clutch off the night before, and started in the morning when it's cold without it, if it would still make the noise? Hmmm

Just wondering if anyone has chased this down? I have an 08 Sequoia, 239k and it just started making a similar noise. I describe it as someone blowing in the top of a coke bottle. I suspect the SAIS system. The pumps are in the passenger wheel well but the two valves are located under the intake manifold near the firewall. Also the valve unit connects to the hard lines running to the exhaust manifold and both connecting points (driver and passenger side) have a metal gasket. I’m suspicious either the valves aren’t opening or closing correctly or one of those gaskets is failing. Will keep this thread updated as I inspect mine.
