What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Personally, I'd buy the moog LCA's. I replaced just the bushings in my last truck and it wasn't too hard, just used a bottle jack and waited for the scary pop when they'd launch about 2 feet.

 

They don’t care. Besides, this is something I should have figured out by now. Just assumed it was a solid connection at that adjacent pin. I did realize things pivoted at your broken bolt area and made sure that was in working order 2 years ago. Thanks for posting your pics as I’d never have even thought about it.

These first gens are units.
A few years back a lady who was high on meds turned into me while I was going through an intersection at 40mph. She hit my rear drivers wheel perfectly and spun me out. Her insurance covered the repairs, but I needed a new flare, wheel, tire, and leaf springs. The axle was fine and I didn't suffer any other damages.

 

These are tough trucks, and I am glad you were able to have your Tundra repaired.

I drove mine to the gas station this evening, and after eyeballing it on level ground from various angles I am almost certain there is no hidden damage... both the bed & leaf springs look fine. It will require body work and paint, but I don't know how they will match 18 year old weathered paint to my satisfaction without painting the entire truck.

 

Got a little something in the mail yesterday.

Should have some more goodies tomorrow for the Tundra!

Hi Guys! (Wimbo included for old times’ sake because my searching reminded me you guys have done brake upgrades):

I just figured out Hulk’s calipers have/ are causing uneven wear... causing a pull to the left when hard braking. Probably gonna get ‘em fixed by mechanic because I’ve got a trip planned, but I can’t recall which markings are on the bigger, best ones? WL or WG ???

We previously upgraded to the bigger ones and added yellow “race” pads... but Hulk is at the mechanic so I cannot check for the markings on components now.

Can one of you remind me which is the upgrade, WL or WG, and I’ll restart my replacement components list from that...??

I know this sounds cheesy. I’ll verify the markings on the truck before ordering tomorrow morning, but racing due to delivery times, so hoping to get the research done tonight. Please help me if you keep this info in your head!

WE were the smaller 2000-02 Calipers.

WL were the upgrades in 03-06. The WL fit where the smaller WE fit without modifications.

There is another upgrade which I have no idea about which requires machining of Calipers mounting brackets from another Lexus type vehicle.

The 13WL are the common larger ones. 13WG are the same size as 13WL, they just have a different brake line angle, pads are interchangeable for these two calipers.

The smaller one that your truck originally came with is 13wse or something like that. If you already went to 13WL or 13WG order brake pads for an 04 and you should be fine.

You could always upgrade to GX460 calipers and rotors. It's not that difficult.

I have a serious time constraint... can’t do this at home or at Bruce’s in time for my trip, and my mechanic is a safety-first kinda guy (which I like in a mechanic)— not gonna get him to shave off 3.0mm of anything.

I did read it though, just would have to do that Big Brake upgrade ourselves and no time now to work out the details.

It occurs to me: I should bring y’all up to date on my considerations, because it’s different from both the “big brake” and the “Big Brake” options. So it may be no go UNLESS the fitment can match the 13WL or 13WG component sizes.

A recommendation (considered due to time restraints) from a knowledgable off-road race mechanic (who may/ may not know about the 13WL and 13WG upgrade options for my 2002 Tundra— I’ll tell him tomorrow and see how his recommendation jibes) was to “upgrade” to this:

I’d like to keep using the yellow race pads Bruce put on Hulk last year, instead of the pads on this set shown above... so I need to be able to compare the component sizes (not shown in the info linked above) with the components currently on Hulk (I’ll verify tomorrow if those are 13WL or 13WG), to make sure the new set is the same size... and get the right sized yellow pads.

Short version alternative: if the set linked above isn’t similar on size to 13WL or 13WG, I’ll maybe skip it. Or I’ll try to find a set like that linked above, but for an 04 Tundra, based on the info Luis posted above.

Good replacement option but thats still the 13swe or whatever the small one is. Bright side is you should be able to retain your current brake pads (EBC yellows I presume).

13WL would mean you need new calipers, pads, brakes bled at least. New rotors optional. I used my same rotors when I went to 13WL, didn't even have them turned because I'm rebel. everything works fine.

Honestly there isn't a big difference between brake sizes. As long as the brakes are maintained and well bled, they will work fine.

Hmmn, the only bit I’m still working on is, I thought we already upgraded to WL or WG (I’ll look tomorrow), so the yellow brake pads fit that size. If I can’t find a size in the set I linked above that is comparable to what I’ve got now, I may just replace the calipers with same I have now....

Wait. So are you meaning that the “sport” type linked above, even in the smaller size, might be equivalent to the WL or WG (with yellow pads, I mean)? <sigh> My brain hurts.

 

@Sunnier then for sure, just swap calipers and you should be okay. If you crawl under the truck you can see the stamping on the caliper to be sure.

 

@Sunnier I did just the factory replacement for the WLs, as did a few others. This is the kit from RA:



I think the general consensus is that the WLs don't neccesarily offer better braking, just more reliable braking and brakes in general. Less fade and better warp resistance.

With how cheap that and a set of new drums/shoes and a few bottles of fluid are, it's worth it (for my truck anyways) just to start from scratch.

 

My refurbished Viper remote start came in. Its got a rats nest of wiring. I have already found several wiring diagrams around here and look forward to tearing out my remaining hairs this weekend as I try to get it installed. LOL

 

I was picking up dinner to-go last night, close to closing time. While I'm waiting I see a kid has pulled up next to me & is loitering between his car & my Tundra. Looks like he's waiting for someone to give them a ride home - but he also looks like he's about to lean up on my truck. So I hit the remote start & suddenly the kid decides he has to clean out the passenger seat/foot well area & walks to passenger side of his coupe.

Remote start has lots of uses, you'll come to love it more than you'll hate the install.

 

Startles teenagers and cats. 'Nuff said.

 

If you're happy with the braking, just need to fix the pulling, then I'd just replace the calipers. Have you checked the guide pins? Sometimes they just need to be greased up and that's what's causing the pulling.

So I skeptically gave Griot's Black Shine Trim Restorer a try after seeing another member using it here. I'd been using the Mother's product (Black Magic?) but wasn't necessarily impressed with the results - you were lucky to get a dark grey out of it.

I gotta say, much more impressed with Griot's product. I probably should've scrubbed the plastic with a textured dish sponge before applying to remove the wax/polish from the splash guard but ... I dunno. I think it's a great difference. will see how it lasts.

I will add, I probably shouldn't have wiped it down with a dry terrycloth after 10 mins. I suspect it may've continued soaking in, but who knows. Maybe I'll try on the other ones and compare. The dark spot on the bottom left is the shadow of the tail pipe, and the lighting is weird making it look greyer than it is on that last pic.

 

Cool... I removed mine, painted them black, and reinstalled them.

 

Well, I'm embarrassed. I must be @bmf4069 illegitimate son. I did a drain+fill of the transmission and I think I've stripped the pan where the drain bolt goes. The crazy thing is that I knew that metal was thin so I was actually being careful. I actually had it snug and then I saw a washer in the catch pan so I unscrewed the bolt and reinstalled with the washer. Now I can't tighten it, nor can I remove the bolt. It just spins, alternating between loose and somewhat snug.

So now what? Never been in this scenario. I don't understand why I can't at least remove the bolt.

 

buy a new transmission pan. :/

 

Remove the pan and try to repair or buy a new pan sadly.
