Was that on torque or pan ? Were you towing with S4 and tow haul ?

To get to 300 degrees need to be in first gear. The torque converter will lock in second and third gear around 260 degrees.

What were the driving conditions when the warning light came on? the torque converter can lock in gears 2-6, but just because it can does not mean it will. In any given gear can give it enough gas to unlock the torque converter but not enough to downshift where it would lock.

The 2nd and 3rd gear lock come into play when climbing a mountain at constant speed.

Your 2018 has a transmission cooler?

Yes 18s have a trans cooler, but it’s not overly efficient. It’ll get the job done but the 19/20 owners that have installed one are reporting lower numbers than what I see with my factory cooler.

Hitting 302 on an 18 is concerning.

The purely fictional description of forum user Greg Marmalard being brain washed in a basement by henchmen-like Toyota personnel in no way reflects my assumptions about the removal of the transmission cooler, nor does any part of the brief satirical narrative attempt to explain, quantify, or qualify any argument for or against the installation of the transmission cooler on 2019 and later years. It was written only for the purpose of adding humor and levity to the thread. It was not even intended to be constructive, but did fit into the conversation as we all wait for the lab analysis of Mr. Marmalard’s ATF sample, much like the Mr. Bean GIFs that followed.

If I had chosen to communicate my assumptions or feelings about the removal of the transmission cooler, I would have made my points in a structured way, without including fictional characters or situations. But really, it wouldn’t be terribly relevant for me to do so, since I have a 2018 which came equipped with the cooler.

I’m tempted to send in a sample from my truck so we have more than one data set. Is it easy to extract a small amount from the fill plug?

I find it comforting. I have a 2019 without an additional cooler and have not hit 302 or had an alarm.

Apparently the cooler on 2018 and older was not doing anything for the transmission ATF cooling and we're not hearing of massive transmission failures.

can extract some from the check plug. Truck should be level and cold. Start the engine and crawl under and remove the ‘check’ plug(has the word check on it). Hold a pan under and catch the drips. May have to wait until Trans temperature approaches 100 degrees. If it gets hotter then 110 degrees and nothing comes out your level is low.

It does something, I just think the btu isn’t that great. My hoses are hot around 195 and that seems to be where it wants to settle. It will go up when towing or accelerating fast, but goes back down to around 195. My engine coolant is usually the same or a little higher.

Same for me. I experimented over the past month with keeping the thermostat pinned open. When it’s pinned opened, my temps fluctuate between 150-175 driving around town. I’ll likely pin the thermostat May-September and leave unpinned Oct-April moving forward.

If a well-cooled transmission has a lifespan of 15-20 years or 250-300k miles...and a poorly cooled, overheated transmission has a lifespan of half that or less... do you really expect to see issues on a 2-3 year old unit ?

I think the jury is still out on this subject... and will likely still be out for a few more years... but by then the damage is already done.
    I didnt wait.
I put a cooler on mine and will never have the overheating concern in the back of my mind every time I hook a trailer up.

I measure both, trans and torque with a Scan Guage II and the temps are within 5* difference. If i am hammering on the right peddle going up a steep grade with the TT the temps usually equal out by the time i get to the top of the incline (265*F+). Even when i am not towing anything, the temps are usually equal across the pan and the torque converter. Unlike my tacoma with the transcooler, those temps were usually a 20*F difference, maybe more at times.

It was. But mostly self inflicted, should of been in low range, 37’s with stock gears, LT heavy pig truck, 105F + temps.. My temps look the same as 19 and 20, but all the self inflicted stuff makes my info useless for comparison.

Didn't read all 7 pages, but based on the memes the analysis results haven't posted yet.

In for the results. Trying to determine if the next truck should be a newer Tundra, go HD, or keep my 2016 for awhile.

My UOAs took two weeks to the day from when I mailed them. Think it was about 1 week for USPS to deliver and another week to get the results...

OP was last seen Sunday, 4 days ago. He is probably out camping again. Or his transmission burned up taking his phone with it.
