Replace timing belt based on age or just miles?

I purchased a 2000 Tundra AC SR5 4wd about 6 months ago. When I purchased it had about 135k, it sits right at 140k now. When I purchased the truck, the CarFax Said the timing belt was replaced at 96k by a local Toyota dealership. The problem is that happened in 2006. How worried should I be about replacing it? Only 40k miles on it but about 14 years of age.

 

I replaced my belt earlier this year on my 2006 with ~67k miles on it due to age; I think you should do the same.
I believe most on here will advise the same - 14yrs is a long time for that rubber belt...

 

If I remember correctly, timing belts on 1st gens are recommended to be replaced every 7 years or 90,000 miles.

 

14 years is a pretty good length of time for a rubber component to be in there and yes, I would swap it out. I did the TB on my 2005 LS430 last year, with a mere 62,000 miles and as expected, the belt and water pump looked new. It was worth the peace of mind to swap it out, though.

 

Most likely the belt won’t fail, but if it does then kiss the motor good bye. Toy reccos 9 years or 90k miles.

Yours has 40k on it. Just replace it for piece of mind. Flush coolant prior to water belt change and maybe you need a new radiator and accessory belt.

You should replace the timing belt ASAP. Since your engine still has lost of miles left, you don't want to take a risk if the timing belt is failed.

 

Don’t tell her that! She literally has “survivor night” with my sister and her husband. It was one of the OG reality tv shows(COPS being the first and best)
But I can’t stand watching that kind of “editing” for an entire episode.

Looks like I’m changing the timing belt. I am fairly capable in terms of repairs but I may have someone do this for me? What does the dealer charge to do this? Or think I should get the parts and have a local guy do it?

 

I would watch a video on it before deciding. Some have said as far as T-belt jobs are are concerned, the 4.7L is fairly easy. If you are capable you might not have any issues. Just make sure you use OEM or equivalent parts. Don't go aftermarket on the T Belt. I paid the dealer around $900 to do my timing belt and water pump. Most people recommend the Aisin kit sold on Amazon.

Is your radiator original? 20 years is a good run for the radiator. It might be a good time to replace both.

 

I have a 2004 that I bought with 135k miles on it. The TB had never been changed. I thought about doing myself but I found myself in the rare position of having more money than time so I paid a shop to do it. It was a complete dumpster fire and I wish I had done it myself - or at least found a competent shop to do it. I paid $950 (which I understand is what the dealerships around here get) for the cornholing.

The truck was from the Bakersfield area which can be extremely hot and dry. Looking at the belt, it was time for a change.

 

I am in Maryland, I just called the dealership, they want 1500.... I’m going to look into doing this myself

Should replace camshaft seals, crankcase seal, possibly water pump, etc while everything is open and exposed.

doing my 2007 2nd gen today has 120k i could do this my self but Truck won't fit in the Garage, so a local shop is doing it for
$850 with Aisin parts and toyota T-stat and drive belt I would do the belt

 

Theres lots of good threads on here, as well as a good YouTube video to help you along. You got this. And that's the kit a lot of people on here get, and is recommended.

Why the rush??? LOL!!! The 05 truck I have now had the original belt et al.... 267K miles.... previous/original owner did only the basics over the years...

 

I sold my 04 this past July with 196,000 and the original belt. I was the third owner in 2008 at 40,000. If I didn't get a 2020 I might have tried for 267k miles. Boy do I miss that truck.

 

Should I go OEM for timing belt / water pump? Or is Aisin ok? I’m fairly new to Tundras.

 

Aisin makes lots of parts for many Japanese OEM's. Buying Aisin parts can often save you a good amount of money vs buying essentially the same parts from a car dealership.

 

I was in for about 1,000 from the dealer both times I had the belt and water pump changed. First around 90,000, second around 187,000
