What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Do you think mechanics still exist out there (particularly independent mobile mechanics) that will complete a repair and sabatoge another unrelated part of the vehicle so they will get called right back and make more money? Vote yes or no and settle a disagreement for me?

 

There probably is, a lot of shitty people out there.

The canisters are crazy expensive. I'd start with checking for cracked lines first.

There are some cheap assemblies out there if you go that route save your old parts since not all of the aftermarket springs will fit every shock.

 

Water pump groove? The water pump doesn’t get any fipg, the inlet side the fipg goes in the groove per the FSM


Most of the time it doesn’t go in the groove but the 4.7 is an exception for the. I let housing

 

I bought the truck with these tires, they're 305/70/r16 I think they are/were mud tires? I haven't checked specifics yet but it definitely has some kind of lift. Regular alignments keep it from rubbing the upper control arms. Buut.. my lower ball joints have broken 2 times and I had to completely overhaul upper lower ball joints inner and outer tie rods with oem parts and as soon as I can afford it I'm gonna take them down in size. It's not worth the time and money replacing parts. Plus the damage to my door and fender from when the ball joint snapped.

 

After the damage from those busted ball joints you should probably just part that thing out. I'll PM you a list of parts I'm interested in.

 

Bilstein 5100 are recommended by many here. Re-use the stock springs. If you don't want to compress them, you can take your shock assemblies to a shop and they may swap the swings over for $50.

 

Not exactly something I did, but something I picked up. I've been wanting a drop hitch to tow my bugs, this should do fine and the color is right.

 

Is the gap so you can run a pintle hitch?

 

Since I couldn't complete the brake line repairs, I moved on to the shocks. Managed to get this one done before sundown. 3 more to go.

I escaped the spring compressor of death, this time around.



Borrowed this tip from Timmy the Toolman. You take the truck's own jack, invert it and use it to press down on the entire arm assembly in order to get the shock assembly out. I only disassembled the tie rod and the sway bar.



Looks like shoddy work was done on removing the dust cap.



Bits of the brake dust shield just crumbled apart.




More shoddy work left behind. No cotter pin on the tie rod! Good thing the rust kept it in place, lol.

 

No but good guess. Thats for recovery snatch strap activities.

 

Better put a kryptonite double hardened finger print and retina scanner lock on that hitch. Too sexy for most to resist.

 

Oh yeah,, its only gonna be on when in use, otherwise it will be locked away.

 

Made the universe happy by washing the wife's car! All is good now...


2016 Lexus NX 300H (Hybrid)

 

Finished installing the front Billys. Ended up with about 2" in additional height.

I'm thinking this is going to make it even tougher to do the timing belt now. Maybe I'll build a 6" wooden platform for that.



Look how this poor bushing was squashed...



Used the truck's own jack as a compression tool to push up on the tie rod so I can torque the castle nut to spec. Otherwise, the ball joint was spinning with the nut.



Used the truck's jack crank wand to rotate the bottom shock mount into position. It happened to be close enough in diameter to fit.

 

Nice use of stock tools.

 

Prepped and painted that area under the battery and cleaned up the engine bay.

 

Had some fun pulling the old parts truck out of the woods.

 

Did the pinche weld mod, turned out good enough for me. Small double ended “sheeter” was the winner of the day for most useful tool. I was doing the relief hole like @Darkness mentioned, but a full length bit and a drill don’t fit up in there very well. Bent it back with a crescent wrench and left the bolt for structural support. Then I painted it BLACK and used the heat gun to sorta mold the plastic back. I don’t rub on that lowest flare bolt anymore so that’s a win!

 

So my boss has these tires and with 38k on them he is really happy with them. I drove his rig and they are winning me over. Full set is $550 otd. I have 17x7 snowflake rims. Manufacturer suggests an 8.5 rim for the 285s. Should I go for the 265s? Or can it be done?

Finally had a few minutes to install the retro tri-color emblem, love this thing!!!

Does anyone else have this? I've seen the white/gray/dark gray emblem on the Lexus' and also the yellow/orange/red one on an FJ around my area.

 

I like the emblem but tell me more about your electric conversion and the charging plug sticking out the front. What's your electric only range?

Also check the gas cap and the gas tank where the cap sits. Lots of times it's just a bad seal between the cap and the tank.

For shocks, your best bet is to get 5100's and have a local shop assemble them for you. The best deal I've found for preassembled is the eibach at toytec

 

That visor does look cool but what is the purpose of it? Looks like a hat lol

 

I'm getting an annoying squeak from my front driver's leaf shackle. I tried re-torquing bolts to 80 ft lbs but the top one keeps compressing and I feel I shouldn't tighten it further (other side's fine and not extremely tight). Weird that only one is done.


Probably time to switch it out, so I just have the understandable plethora of questions... anyone ever replaced a shackle and what tutorial did you follow? Should I do both sides, and is there anything else I should tackle while under there? Any recommended brands? I also have SuperSprings, if that's relevant.
