When I go up I-70 my trans temps climb to the mid 190's on sections, never gets over 200 though. It would spike on the steep sections then go down to 180, but rarely below 180 climbing out of Denver. Commuting up and down I-25 in stop and go it's usually around 160-170 (summer driving)

This was on my previous stock 01 and not towing.

Does anyone know if the 2013 model year Tundra comes with a transmission cooler? Asking for a friend. Haha.

After 2010, if a Tundra has an auxiliary transmission cooler, it is packaged as the top section of the AC condenser. The most obvious tip-off is a wad of transmission fluid hoses behind the passenger side grille that connect to the top of the AC condenser.

Good to know because that is the highway I am referring to. Up Berthoud pass, it got a little warmer but never broke 200*.

85° and dry heat here today. 40 minutes driving averaging 30-35 MPH in steady driving style. Only a few stops here and there.

Here is the read out at the end of the drive.

I’d like to see the readings after two or more hours of driving. If anyone the OEM setup and can provide some temp readings after a good drive, that would be awesome.

I’ll have a nice long highway drive reading coming up in a few weeks that incorporates towing with weight on mild inclines. This drive will be my deciding factor. I’d love to see others readings to compare like you suggest.

I drove down to Buena Vista last week with the slide in camper. Up Kenosha I saw 209* with 75* air temps once. It only happened towards the last 1/2 mile of the 6 mile climb, once I crested the pass I never saw higher than 185* the rest of the way to BV at 65mph.

Forgot to mention on the reverse route home I only hit 187* on the backside of Kenosha and never saw higher than 170* the rest of the way home with similar air temps.

This I do. I'm also due for an AT fluid drain and add. I plan to do three fluid swaps over the next few months before winter rolls in.

Thank you. This is good info from you. Your Kenosha drive is steeper than anything I’ll ever do. I feel real good with the OEM Cooler right now.

This is the info I curious to see. I drive my truck to/from the gym every morning (about 5 miles each way) and to/from work (20 miles each way) and the trans barely starts creeping into the low 50’s and that’s with my current setup blocking off the external cooler. The longer drivers obviously bringer higher temps that’s what I would like to compare to. My current setup will not go above 185* no matter how hard I pushed it. It’s pretty slick now that it’s all dialed in.

For $50 I'd like to get around to this someday. Maybe before next summer begins.

I used the excuse that my old one was rock chipped to convince myself to do it. For $100 total (cooler and 13011), I think it’s a fairly cost effective mod. It’s only a few hose clamps and time, so you aren’t out much anyways.

Now that I understand it a little more, I’m glad I made the switch. I’m sure there were times my temps were above 200* which was not ideal for me. Now it will get warm in the winter months and stay cool in the summer time.

I now understand why you should lock out o/d when towing. Why does unlocking the torque converter cause temps to climb so much? I'm riding shotgun while my wife drives the last stretch home. We just hit 204 while climbing a mountain. As soon as I had her turn off o/d the temp dropped 15 degrees.

    Slippage creates heat.

On another note, I thought I remember on these Tundras, the “Tow Mode” only doesn’t shift into OD. It has nothing to do with trans lockup. I really think in the lower gear, the engine isn’t working as hard. That’s all it is. In my Cadi, the “Tow Mode” actually changes shifting points and effects lock up. It’s a tougher drive, but it’s WAY better when towing. The “Tow Mode” on these First Gens seems kind of hokey to me.

The 2002 does not have a Tow Mode.

The O/D button on the stalk reduces the RPM in 2nd and 3rd gears. Heat is not a problem in O/D unless the gears start toggling in and out of 3rd/4th gears. This happens when towing/hauling a load going up inclines or with strong head winds. Thats when O/D needs to be turned off.

The 05 06 Tow Mode eliminates/induces 1st gear when activated/deactivated from readings. I do not know as I do not have one, but yes that does seem hokey.

I don't think that's right. It was previously stated the torque converter will unlock at a certain engine load but it doesn't downshift. I'm sure you've noticed this. So today, going up that incline the t.q was unlocked and creating heat. Once we turned off o/d the truck downshifted to 3rd. So heat absolutely was a problem in o/d.

Unlock might not be the right word but I know something happens with it. You can hear and feel the change. This is different from it downshifting.

When the converter is locked the engine is directly connected to the transmission. When the torque converter is unlocked the vanes in the converter are hydraulically transferring the motion of the engine to the transmission hence the head.

basically lockup the converter is doing nothing.

I covered this in a thread a while back.

    https://www.tundras.com/threads/regarding-od-off-and-towing.72459/#post-1861319

Here's a good experiment you can try: With the transmission in OD (OD Off button not activated) drive at a steady 40-45 mph on flat road and you'll be in 4th gear with the TC locked. When you get to a fairly steep incline, the transmission unlocks the TC, and downshifts from 4th to 3rd. Let that happen while maintaining 40-45 mph. Then push the OD Off button in. What happens is that the TC locks back up, so you'll notice the RPM drop slightly. Push the OD Off button again (deactivating it), the transmission won't shift into 4th because you're still maintaining 40-45 mph, but the TC unlocks, causing the RPM to rise slightly.

So if the incline is a pretty long one, you can sit there locking and unlocking the TC by toggling between OD-Off and OD-On. If you have the equipment to measure the trans temp, you'll see the temp go up when the TC is unlocked and down when it locks.

Ok. I didn't realize both occured. I didn't realize that by it unlocking it automatically shifted to 3rd gear.

Thats not what I experience. In that exact situation the RPM jumps and the truck downshifts. I assume going into 2nd which I mistook for 3rd previously.

Yesterday, going up that long steep grade I felt the T.Q unlock and temps went way up. Once I pushed the o/d button the truck downshifted and maintained a higher RPM so it could maintain speed on that grade.

That's exactly what happened. Temps went from 204 to 190 then eventually back down to 160.

So my mistake PHM. Reading your post again it seems like you're trying to say the same thing as TVpierce.

The only part I disagree with(or haven't experienced) is that hitting the O/D button will reduce RPM's. As soon as I push the button the truck downshifts and RPM's jump because I'm maintaining the same speed but in a lower gear. I don't want to derail this thread any more though. Carry on.

I tried your experiment driving on flat earth at 55mph. My transmission temps did not reflect any changes. No tow or haul. Just regular driving. I also tried the experiment at lower speeds without a noticeable change. Haven’t had the opportunity to try in towing/hauling up inclines, but I’m sure there would be some observational change.
