I'll be changing wheels and tires soon, adding a 5th to the spare location and installing oem tpms in all 5.
How will this work having 5 'active' tpms around the truck? What will be displayed on digital pressure readout in the cluster?

My bet is that you will have issues getting it to display the tires you want it to, but I'm not sure. Just gonna watch and see what the experts say.

I have the same setup that you are after. I have the four rolling on the ground reading as should on the the cluster. The “fifth” is in its spare spot and has not “confused” the readings of the other four. However, I have only rotated twice so my experience is limited.

Well that's cool. I'm glad to lose my previous bet. Means I might do a pressure monitor in my spare too!

I did have to funk around quite a bit with sensors though. I have five of the powder coated TRD wheels and had to get a correct sensor for the fifth one to get it working for 18+ model years. The stealership was able to program all of them and did a couple of test drives to ensure that the wheels were registering accurately.

    D5DDAE82-9CFF-4C5F-A876-D038B82C0C6C.jpg

I also have a set of four “steelies” (can’t find a fifth without buying another set- which I do not want even if they are dirt cheap). I am in the process of getting them powered in a real cool gun metal color (you can take credit for that one— you gave me the idea) for my “winter” or “beater” set.

Anyway, at the same time as with the TRD wheels, I had the stealership make sure to see if the sensors on them would also register. They did without incident. I asked if there would be any problems with changing over between sets or at rotations in the future and the good stealership told me “no”. They told me that supposedly there are “ten spots” for sensors to be registered. I am not certain I would put stock into that one... However, it could make sense because if I have two sets of wheels with a five tire set up that get rotated, well who knows. I have only done the rotation without incident but have not had the steelies changed over yet...

All wheels are OEM with OEM sensors; 40° for the steelies and 20° for the TRD’s.

Interesting. If there are 10 slots for registering the sensors, and you have five tires on the truck, does it display all five? Photo?
Also anyone figured out if you can make the TPMS read higher than 50 psi? I'm running 10 ply Michelins in the 75-80 psi range for hauling my draft horses in a gooseneck. Display displays 50psi which presumably is the max? Thx

The truck is smart enough to tell what sensors are rotating and will only display those. I believe they have 10 slots available so that you could have a summer and winter set of 5 tires each and not have to reprogram every time you changed sets.

There are five tires that I am currently running for my summer/fall set-up. Each have their own sensor. The best way I can relay this is to use the same info that was relayed to me by the Toyota Tech; “The truck ECU is smart enough to only register the four “rolling” tires and not the stationary fifth...”

It has made sense to me because I have now completed 3 tire rotations without incident or fail. I also have the other four winter/spring set that I park to everyday and they never register or confuse the ECU. I don’t know how to capture this with a photo...

I think that he just wanted a photo of your TPMS screen in your truck because you have the 5th sensor. I also have a sensor in my spare, but I haven't been doing 5 tire rotations like you have.

Thx.... always thought it would make sense to report on the spare tire pressure since a) it's a pain to check b) when you need it you need it :)
Wonder if the rotating part is new. Used to be if you had your summer tires with sensors in the garage (in the winter) they would reset the TPMS display for awhile when you parked near them. When I picked up my '18 I'd arrange to have a different set of rims (takeoffs from the general manager's truck)....the dealership found out the hard way that there had been a change in frequencies and they had to unmount everything and swap sensors. Told me there had been a change....
Something to watch for if buying older rims/sensors

Ahhh, yes come to think of it, I heard that too when the stealership was doing the sensors for me (super-long winded, crappy-story, but lessons learned type and why I know more about TPMS for ‘19&20’s than I really cared to know) because I had purchased the extra set of sensors off a ‘20 that would not work for my ‘19...

Interesting ...so supposedly my 2018 was newer than the managers...are you saying there was another change between 2019 and 2020?

At least I had the deal made about swapping tires as part of the purchase...and it included taking off the factory tires, installing 4 used ones, swapping rims with the Manager (so I could trade the factory michelins for 10 ply)...I bought the truck 2500 miles from home.... In the end it took the dealership about 4 hours to get it all straightened out at no $ cost to me :) ....no stealership profit there.

Yup. With the 2020s they added the smart handles and push button start, and apparently that meant changes in the ECU. That wound up requiring a different TPMS sensor. It's a bunch of confusion, for sure.

At some point the frequencies of all the 'wireless' components must be a challenge to designers. I know I messed up my remote when I updated the cargo light with a LED bulb (and this forum identified the issue about RF interference).

I cannot even imagine all the juggling that goes into trying to get all the stuff wired up and working together without interference. Makes my head hurt just thinking about it. :goingcrazy:

I have a 2017 1794 and I'm not positive whether this will apply to this thread but just in case someone is wondering I found Discount Tire to be very helpful with TPMS.

When having a summer and winter set of tires, I found that Discount Tire can clone your original TPMS and everything works perfectly. No dash lights and no having to worry about programming extra TPMS.

I had originally bought 4 new OEM TPMS sensors but after finding out that they didn't fit my wheels the Discount Tire decision was easy as they provided the exact TPMS needed.

So........if you rotate your spare(only tire without a sensor) into the tire rotation it will not throw a pressure code?

Only time the code will be thrown is when a sensored tire rotating or not falls below a certain psi?

I believe so. When I had my cloned TPMS winter tires sitting in the garage all summer they never threw a code unless the psi dropped. If kept aired up all was good.

My experience has been that all installed “rolling tires” need to have a sensor in order to not have any system error codes. Therefore, those rolling sensors will trigger an alert when pressures fall below set threshold.

    Good info, thanks.

Dropped off my fifth to get mounted, balanced and a TPMS put in.

I'll be adding the fifth into tire rotations.

I bought a matching 5th rim and 5 all new tires. I didn’t put a TPMS sensor onto that 5th rim because I thought I couldn’t program a 5th wheel on my 2007. Now I’m wondering if I should have put a TPMS sensor on.

I too plan to do a 5 tire rotation. When I get time I will mount that spare (with no TPMS) and see if the tire light comes on. I’ll report back here with my findings.

I have a 2016 that came with the trd off road wheels...does the small spare from the factory not have a tpms sensor? I am adding a full size method /wildpeak to match the rest of the truck

    Just stumbled on this thread.

In doing a bunch of work mapping signals to the 2018+ cluster, I found it has the ability to display 5 tire pressures on screen with a value from 1-125 PSI. Getting the 2018+ TPMS ecu programmed to display the 5th and values over 50 PSI is another story. I don’t think Techstream allows you to open up these options but the cluster can handle and display this info if the TPMS Ecu is sending it.

This was done with a 2018 cluster running on the bench where I replicated and modified the signals that come from the TPMS from my laptop. I do actually have a TPMS ecu laying around, bought one shortly after this but never really dove into it to see how it works.

Well, I finally got around to rotating the tires (hadn’t driven truck much until recently). I can confirm that the TPMS light DOES NOT come on when I have 1 tire mounted that doesn’t have the TPMS sensor, and that 4th tire with the TPMS sensor is being stored underneath as my spare.

I can only speak to my 2007 that I bought a matching rim for, and for which I now do a 5 tire rotation.

This is in contrast to my wife’s 2018 Mercedes CLA250-the tpms light came on very quickly since the system recognized that not all 4 tires were actively being read when I tried this same thing.

ok. This is about the coolest thing ever. Can we figure out how to make this a reality for our 2018 trucks? I’m going to a 5 tire rotation and will have TPMS in all 5. May as well monitor the dang spare, right???

Checking back in on this one. My tires are getting closer to bald, and I’m really looking forward to a 5-tire rotation with functional TPMS.
