Hey everyone. so 2 weeks i took my truck in to have the passenger side cv axle replaced cause the boot was cracked and spraying grease. a few days ago i noticed it was leaking oil from the same new cv axle seal going into the case. Took it back to the shop and the mechanic said he never touched the seal and didn't replace cause it wasn't leaking and it was totally unrelated to his work and just random that the seal blew a few days after his work and is refusing to replace without full payment calling it a "new" job. Is he correct in its just dumb luck or shady as fu#$

If the seal is leaking after the job, then the mechanic might have damaged it. Depending on the type of shop, ask to speak to someone of authority/owner. It doesn't take long to swap out the seal. The mechanic is trying to make a quick buck...again. Shady AF.....my opinion.

I think your title covers both options for the mechanic: shady or dumb fuck.

Dude should've replaced the seal when he did the CV, regardless if it was "not leaking before". It's a seal, it's not usually deemed reusable.

They need to pay for that. I would wipe it off to make sure it’s not just residue

    Definitely shady.

I had a mechanic replace the clutch on my 4Runner and the next day I noticed that the Tcase seal was leaking. Took it back, he never admitted they did anything, but replaced all the seals and fluids free of charge.

That’s the way it should be if it wasn’t like that before fix it now if you have a radiator replace and your brakes go metal to metal Different story lol

Having a shop is hard sometimes cause your dammed if you do and dammed if you don’t.

Ok so we don’t know how many miles are on that tundra that axle seal rubber could of already been hard but that was his responsibility to check that but if you include it in the job From the start some customers might think your nickel and dimming them to death But anything can break on older vehicles He could have snapped off a lug stud broke a ball joint bolt you never know and who’s fault is that? He didn’t rusted It on their it’s a tough business dealing with vehicles and customers.

I had a situation where a customer came in for Transmision flush on a 1997 Dodge Caravan we lifted the van and her passenger strut fell off broke the axle and snapped the brake hose my tech didn’t see it cause the button to lift the van was on the driver side her whole strut tower was rusted out omg what a nightmare completely not our fault she was so upset called the cops on us we ended up installing a new axle new brake hose bleeding the system she didn’t pay for the trans flush and she sued us that her vehicle was driving fine before it came in and we had to pay for the strut tower repair I’m happy I’m out of the business.
I would repair an axle seal under warranty anytime that’s easy seal is maybe 10 dollars and the techs are already in the shop and hopefully keep a customer happy so he can come back

You are right about that, it is a tough business, trying to keep customers happy.

I had a shop for over 13 years and yes it is VERY tough ! People want everything cheap but they also demand perfection and those 2 things just dont go together ! I have changed hundreds of axles over the years and I have NEVER changed a seal unless it was cut or sliced by accident while doing the job . If it didnt leak right away after the job it was probably just coincidence but a good business man would make right on the repair anyway its just good customer service

truck only has 35k miles on it. it started happening about 2 days after repair. its leaking so bad i had to put an oil catch under the truck for a few days. When asked to fix the problem he quoted me 18 days at full price and if i wanted i could leave at his shop so i didn't have oil in my driveway! Seriously? That is not the right answer. Needless to say he is NOT my mechanic anymore.

Why would anything leak at only 35K miles. Sounds like something a warranty should cover.

Even if it sat it shouldn't have gone bad unless there's something I don't know.

It's definitely got to be tough. My experience with my mechanic was always great. He was always honest and straight forward with me about any repairs, even down to explaining exactly why or why not to do a repair. I didn't know what to expect when I took the 4Runner back, he looked at it and just took care of it. I wish I still lived close by, I would probably still use his shop when I didn't feel like doing the work myself.
