2019 2020 transmission cooler missing

correct, the coolant would share it’s engine heat with the ATF(WS), there-by warming the ATF(WS) in cold environments , and the ATF(WS) shares its heat with the engine coolant, there-by cooling the hot ATF(WS).

The whole package is supposed to keep the WS in its operating temperature range. Under “regular use conditions” of course.
As long as the system works for the majority of operators, why not save the money and time during final production of the vehicle?


You can start to see why the engineers (or who-ever) deemed the Aux heat exchanger unnecessary for most people... however having the option on the table would be nice for those that tow sometimes.

 

i should better rephrase. The trans would not be acquiring heat from the engine heat. It could still generate it’s own heat above engine operating temp

 

here is an example I am dealing with right now. The trans temp is indicating ambient temperature when it should be engine temp (170’s). This tells me the cooler is working but has no control over actual temps due to either, a trans thermostat failure or a total lack of a trans thermostat altogether.
Not a huge concern when it’s always 70-110 degrees ambient. When winter comes we will have issues with this unit, it won’t allow any gear selections other than 1st (and neutral)when trans temp is under 70 degrees.

Anecdotal info: notice the lock-up indicator? Notice the engine RPM? This is the lowest RPM I can maintain lock-up. RPM makes for a more efficient torque converter, which means less slip, and less heat. An older Ford I had would “look” for less than 10% slip in the converter before applying the lock-up clutch. If it never saw 10% or less you never had lock-up, leading to trans wear.
RPM is your friend as long as the cooling capacity of the heat exchanger package can maintain control of unit temperatures.

 

You should check your trans temp PID programming carefully. PID programming was the problem when my trans temps were reading ambient.

 

That is a valid possibility, however, the trans oil temp will go up if we run it out of lock-up. That’s what has led me to believe it is a failed-open T stat or not installed at all. Thank you for the suggestion though, I will have the software tech check their coding for that value after I verify it’s not a (unlikely) voltage supply issue in or out of the sensor.

That's a big part of what's holding me back from spending the Grand to install the aux cooler. I'll probably have the truck no more than five years, and even if I had it 8 years it wouldn't have more than probably 60k miles on it.

 

Same here. Even if I keep it for 10 years (I've never owned a vehicle more than 6 years), and get up to 180k miles or so, I will do 6 drain and fills in that time. That will go a long way to preserve the life of the transmission and give a good indication of its health.

 

If you are only going to have it for 5 years, you have a power train warranty that would protect you. Unless you are towing a lot, or planning to keep the truck long term (10 year mark) I don't know if the cooler would be a must. It certainly won't hurt anything.

 

I would also like to see the invoice, just to take it to a local dealer and have them do the same.

 

My warranty is 6 or 7 years and I tow with it. That's the only reason I sold my Tacoma. I'm still thinking it should go 60k without failure.

 

I wonder if only specific dealerships are installing these coolers or if this can be done at any dealership? I recall other posters saying their dealers would not install one. A part of me wonders if Toyota is going to give the go ahead for dealers to do this going forward since this issue seems to be getting more attention

 

Ditto; I don't tow that much, but knowing there might be an OEM alternative would be pretty neat.

 

I'm wondering who said they would add an external cooler to the Tundra? Some service tech saying they would do it and the actual service foreman are two different things.

 

Yea this was my concern about saying anything. My service rep had no idea the transcooler thermostat was removed in 2019. Like us they were never told either. I politely asked hey if i get a transcooler while its here could you order the rest of oem parts needed and install it for me so i could be sure the fluid level is checked properly. He got with a tech there thats i know of who is bug in the tundra pages on fb. He was eager to so this as well and agreed. Initial thought was maybe retrofit the 2018 condenser since thats why my truck is there anyway my condenser was punctured and needed to be replaced. They came back and said it be too expensive and didn't think be worth the money that route cause the 2018 condenser with the trans cooler init was too much money. They said we can get the thermostat and tubeing from toyota next day if you want to order a hayden cooler which i i d Amazon prime. So that'll be here today..my concern is if toyota corporate knew the dealer may get an ear full. There a great service dept to work with so i i dont want to get them in trouble. The cooler coming in today and im dropping it off to them once it does. Should have the truck back tomorrow so ill update.


To clarify.. i feel id be fine without one. But since they are having the front apart replacing the condenser anyway and i figure let me ask..and they bit so i said fuck it lets do it. Cant hurt in long run if i end up keeping the truck for a long time thats for sure.

 

How much is a transmission rebuild gong to run someone?

Toyota does not rebuild, they replace. Not worth the time to rebuild a transmission

Once out of warranty I can't think of a more expensive way to get a vehicle repaired. There are plenty of local shops with top notch mechanics around. I know you can get rebuilt transmissions for much cheaper than from Toyota. I'm trying to baseline the whole panicked discussion. How much are we talking about in 5-10 years if the transmission needs repair?

I dump $1,000 into something that could/will void the warranty so that I don't have to pay $1,000 to rebuild it in 10 years. Just trying to weigh the options. I don't think Toyota is tring to screw us. I think they believe it is operating withing parameters without the extra cooler. Engineers of the transmission fluid and transmission parts hedge their bets by de-rating the product and parts. It they say it will fail at "X" then odds are that is 80% of the real fail number.

 

Not a clue, never done one. When a tranny is replaced at the dealer and it's under warranty Toyota send out a new one. If it's not under warranty it's from a local rebuild shop. Cost on a rebuild and install varries but 2.5k to 3.5k?

 

Transmission are about $3000. Labor is probably at least $2000. I think when my 10 went out several years ago, warranty total was around $5000. So the total might be more now.

So the roughly $1000 cooler is relatively cheap insurance against failures caused by excessive heat for those who are concerned about it. Good to know. Thank you both.

If you all want piece of mind, instead of shelling out $1000 for a cooler retrofit, why wouldn’t you just get a 10 yr/125k mi extended warranty? Maybe I’m missing something but the extended warranty would cover the whole truck.
