Why Tundra.

Also, as far as reliability goes-- Toyota's are reliable because they never update their platform. Things don't go wrong when you don't innovate.

 

Ha, they did innovate. They basically changed the whole truck market when the tundra came out. They just make minor improvements over time after they make a big change.

 

I love the way it looks, and it even sounds pretty good, but I don't think I would trust a BMW engine as my sole means of transportation. Now, as a second car, I am down.

 

And Ram 1500 only gets 50% better fuel economy than the Tundra trucks. Of course I could add a four 5-gallon jerry cans mounted to the sides of the Tundra bed to get the same driving range. I had to do that with my 1954 Willys so the concept is not new.

 

I'm getting 18 mpg combined. What's your problem?

Family needs changed and I needed to go up in size.

I drove every truck (fall of 2018). Almost bought a Ram. But saved the Tundra for last. Got into the truck and it was basically a new, bigger version of my Tacoma. Felt exactly right. Zero question - it was the right truck.

My wife said she knew I would buy a Tundra before we started. She’s a smart gal.

As a long time Toyota and real Supra fan, don't do it.
The new supra wannabe is an ugly BMW z3 German pos nightmare.

Almost entirely German parts, assembly, and engineering. Toyota stole some BMW engineers because they got stupid wanting to no longer make boring cars. Instead now they are going to make stupid German pos cars it seems.

 

Don't throw away a great truck for a pos German BMW z3 clone.

Unless you are going after a real vintage Supra. You will regret it. Toyota screwed the pooch with this wannabe supra BMW z3 shit show.

Yes your right. It's parts are straight out of the z4 bin, but the z4 came from the z3 which was first so I call it by its heritage.

Either way the car has many issues and is a confused pos, save your money if your smart and get something else.

Or do what you want with your money.

Just like everyone else, reliability and resale value. I just purchased my 2020 Tundra TRD Sport (I Hate Chrome) / SR5 Upgrade package. I test drove all versions of the big 3 and I even test drove the heavy duty versions. All of the trucks I test drove rode like ass, even the Ram 1500, unless you spend the extra $$$ for the air ride. After test driving everything with my wife, i told my wife forget it we are keeping the Tacoma 2013 w/64K and mod'ed to the hills and it rode better than any of the others I test drove. My wife then said to me "I convinced you to by the Tacoma, now I will convince you to by the Tundra" I said the tundra gets crappy MPG and doesn't tow what I want it to. She said do your homework and we will go look at a Tundra. Come to find out, the Tundra actually tows more for the money than the other 3. I researched and found that in order to get a good ride and the max tow packages that the big 3 offers, you need to purchase a specific model and pay HUGE. everything i found was over 55K for a max tow package with a thier largest fuel tank. Payload is a different story i get it. Also the Tundra has the larges fuel tank at 38 gallons. It may not have all of the bells and whistles and fancy do-dads that the big 3 has but that just means nothing is going to break. I like simplicity, so the Tundra was really perfect and rode incredibly smooth. so in a nutshell
1. RELIABILITY
2. RESALE VALUE - 23k for my Tacoma trade in value
3. Price for what i wanted for the Tundra before trade in
4. towing capability
5. fuel capacity
6. interior simplicity
7. Smoothest ride

I really don't think I will ever own any other brand truck.

 

Absolute reliability! I have owned my 2013 since new and it's never been to the shop due to a breakdown.

 

Forgot to mention....who wants to have to be forced to wear a pair of these?

 

My wife tried to talk me into a new Supra instead of the Tundra. The engineer in me won out - function over form. But I was VERY tempted when I sat in the Supra in the dealership. I was totally unaware of the German origins of the new Supra. When I was a (poor) young man, the '88 Supra was my dream car. Its styling still puts new cars to shame. And my neighbor just inherited a spotless white one from his dad - with <5k miles on it! I told him if he ever wanted to sell it just walk across the cul de sac! I would even remove it from his garage for him!

When I was shopping for a truck in 2010, my favorite (appearance wise) was the GMC 1500. After discovering GM refused to build their 1/2 ton crew cab with anything but a Ridgeline sized bed, I forgot about 'em. Had 2 Dodges (lesson learned) Testdrove a really sharp F-150 but Ford's 5.4 V8 didn't feel any better than my 4.7 in my 06 Tundra. I'm fine without all the nannies that the new Tundra's offer.I just added the features on my SR5 that I wanted over the years. What I didn't have to add were, Driver's Side Grab Handle, Dual Glove Boxes,Dual HVAC Controls, Amber Flashers/Signals, Lights in Door Bottoms, Lighted Ignition Ring,Sliding Console and External Trans Cooler.

 

My wife and I owned a 1988 Suburban for 9 years. It got to the point where the check engine light was more of a reading lamp instead of a warning light. I was all set to swap in a 6.0 in it, but my wife asked me if I wanted to spend the weekends building a truck or enjoying one.

So, after we bought our house in 2016, I started doing research on a newer vehicle and decided a first gen Tundra was perfect for us. Found ours on a lot with 116,000+ miles on it for just under $12,000 and scooped it up.

 

Another thing not mentioned often is the capability and reliability of all Toyota off road vehicles around the world. Africa and south east Asia and the Middle East are much harsher environments than the US. I see more Hilux trucks and other Toyota models than anything. Central America is the same way. Toyota owns Costa Rica and surrounding countries. Australia is the same way. So as a brand, Toyota knows exactly what they are doing worldwide reliability wise. If you forgot, watch the top gear episode about killing a Hilux. It is absurd. The Tundra is from the same family. Certain individuals who actually research things like everyone on this forum, eventually see the light and get a Tundra or Tacoma.

 

Ah, that is a general public misconception. Toyota's way is continued improvement. The reason for their reliability is because of continued effort and engineering the existing features until perfection.

Like training martial arts, they teach you to punch the same punch, kick the same kick, and grapple the same grapple for years. Anyone can punch, kick, or grapple, but not anyone can be the master.

I think Toyota is very up to date. They just spend engineering resources in refining and tuning. They have some very cutting edge innovations in development but only releases it when it is ready.

Toyota reminds me of Apple, they are not the first to come out for features, but when they do, it just works...

We both know thats BS. Toyota has not done a single update or progression of refining and tuning on the engine, transmission (besides removing the trans cooler for 19-20) , or head unit (2014-2019). Toyota is about maximizing profit, and they know they can keep selling the same old dog.

 

I will give you that Toyota is slow to update, but the majority of their buyers are after reliability as the highest priority. Look at the 4Runner for example. It has increased in sales every model year with the same lack of updates. As a business, it would be unwise to mess with a formula that is increasing sales year after year. Yes, that maximizes profit, but if people are still lining up to buy it, why would you risk upsetting that by changing things?

 

As far as the powertrain goes, why would they? What do the others have besides marginally better MPG’s and reliability problems?

The 5.7 is damn near 15 yrs old and still in the ball park for horsepower, torque, towing capacity and its dead nuts reliable.

I’d agree on the interior. Its behind, but is it really that far behind chevy or ford? Neither one blows me away, especially the chevy which I can argue I like the tundras interior more.

To me, the big 3 simply put a bunch of irrelevant bullshit(to me) on paper and internet reviewers gawk over it(cause they want more trucks to review).

I cant convey how much I couldnt give a shit less about auto start/stop, DFM’s, etorques, dozens of cameras and extra shit telling me im changing lanes.

If all yota did was pump out a Ram’ish interior and put in a 10 speed for the next gen... they’d take $60k from me.

What is it that is cutting edge technology from the other manufacturers?


The current gen Tundra was reliable already when it came out in 2007, not sure the belief that it took 13 years to be reliable
