Can anyone recommend a somewhat cheap bike tool set....i see the park tool kits for a few hundred up to 7 grand...not interested in doing much but changing petals and maybe a chain or two. Also can anyone suggest a bike stand so I can work on it.....somewhat cheap...thanks

A hex wrench set is about all you need to do basic work on a bike. Not much to them.
I will add to that, a spoke wrench, chain break and brake bleed kit.

0732C077-D80C-449F-899B-AFDB3D921F5E.jpg A few rides so far and this Hightower rocks. Hit up DuPont state forest early AF to beat the crowds. Plan to do the same tomorrow. Took the lower bearing assembly out, regreased cleaned and reinstalled. Also found a slight driveline noise and sloppy shifting was most likely a loose derailleur. Bike getting washed more than the truck right now, guess it makes sense since the truck is being treated nicer. I’m off-roading the bike and not it.

Edit: Turned out driveline was actually chromag pedals. Discovered it when I switched back to the XT clipless.

Little late on the reply, I have a 2015 Kona Lava dome which I believe was $750 new (their site shows the current model as that). Looks like they changed it up a lot since my model (new frame, 1x instead of a 3x in front, and a small upgrade to entry level fork.

I'll just say what I've done as it's not the same model as the Fire Mountain (appears to only by 27.5, the Lava Dome is 29") but it's in the same price range.

On mine I replaced the fork because it was truly bad, no rebound damping so if you hit something big enough to get the wheel off the ground it'd smack down and sounded like you were breaking it. The current fork looks like it has lockout (good for climbing) and rebound adjustment so it should be much better than what mine came with.

I've also had to replace the BB twice and the pedals because of bearings going out, I've also bled the brakes once, and the front derailleur needed some tuning to shift right. Other than that I've liked it, I mainly use it for paved 'state trails' and on my smart trainer. Total between outdoors and indoors it has about 1,600 miles on it.

I've never ridden a 27.5", but I love the 29" wheels, they roll over cracks and stuff so easily, combined with the larger tires for small stuff you really don't need rear suspension.

Hope that helps somewhat. The main issues I had were just cheaper bearings and a bad entry level fork, but have no problems with the frame or any of the actual Kona parts. I'll admit I think I like the 1x setup on the new model than the 3x just for simplicity.

2019 Giant Fathom 1...great bike for the money if you are trail/XC weekend warrior. When I was younger I had many high end full suspensions. The last couple of years I got back into the sport but with two kids I couldn’t justify spending thousands anymore. Technology has improved tenfold since I stopped riding so now in my opinion entry level bikes are equivalent to mid level bikes from 10 years ago. I am a very happy owner and it really is a blast to ride!

We are looking at getting our first bikes for trail riding. I've been looking at the Giant Talon, and currently on a wait list for them. Is there any others I should consider in the <$1000 range?

The Costco Northrock's are rebranded Giants if you can find any left, just get them tuned because Costco staff who put them together aren't likely bike mechanics. I have not compared the difference in components whether the Talon is a big step up so you might want to check that.

The bike I have pictured above (2019 Fathom 1) I was able to get for $950 (msrp was 1450). Multiple bike shops were willing to honor that price. The Talon is a decent bike for lighter riding. The Fathom will serve you much better in the long run and as your skillset improves you will not be force to buy a better bike until you get super serious...

much harder to find these days, but there are still used bargains to be had... I got my 2014 Giant Anthem 27.5 for $1100 in nearly new condition, retail was about double that. Picked up a $300-350 Novara Duster for my son for $120 plus another $60 or so to replace cables and switch the shifter over to a paddle

It took 2.5 months for me to get my new SC Blur. Ordered it March 6, received it May 22. However, they did upgrade my fork and dropper because of the wait. COVID shut the factory down and really hurt production. Hope you get your sooner.

The bike industry as a whole has major supply issues right now. Combo of more people riding, supply chain issues, and inaccurate production predictions.
