To all the folks complaining about the missing trans cooler, auto lsd, or whatever else; please sell/trade your truck immediately and do some fucking research before your next purchase. Have a great day!

    Yes this is possibly true.

However it is also the case that the change to R1234 was known and associated changes were planned and tested to support it. OEM's typically don't wake up and go "oh crap we have to change freon next model year...everyone run and panic!"

The "no transmission cooler, and R1234" permutation was likely known for a while and needed to be tested on current model years regardless of the changes coming.

Nah, I did my due diligence. I owned a 2012 with tow package prior to purchasing my 2019. I never had high trans temps on my 2012. When it came time to purchase my 2019 last April, I verified that the window sticker had the same tow package with larger gears, HD battery and alt, and the engine/trans oil coolers (was worded exactly the same as my 2012 window sticker). I was lead to believe that my transmission was the same setup as my 2012. There was nothing published (or even on a forum) back then to tell me otherwise.

So no, I'm not going to sell my truck immediately. I will productively complain and hope there is a resolution from Toyota. If there isn't, then I will change my fluid out more regularly and consider installing an aftermarket cooling system.

    Have a great day! ;)

My comment really wasn’t directed at you but at some others who are always complaining about something they really should have known before they bought the truck, but thank you for your prompt reply. I am having a great day!

When did dealer window stickers become Gospel?

EDIT: I haven't purchased a brand new vehicle in about 25 years, and I remember dealers had a practice of replacing the manufacturers window sticker with their own dealer window sticker... I was taught not to trust the information found on "dealer window stickers".

Got a call from Schaeffers earlier regarding my question about their fluid ( I use 204SAT) They said above 230F, it will begin to oxidize slightly, but only if the fluid stays at that temperature for extended periods, around an hour or so. Pulling hills or passing someone is completely fine and will not hurt the fluid to spike up to 250 while doing so for a few miles while pulling hills, etc. The fluid starts to break down at 300F and will break down rapidly at 350F+. But at those temps I'd be worried more about the clutches than the fluid. Hope this helps

So Rex, I'm curious. What would you have done? Hooked up an OBDII reader during the test drive to monitor the trans temp so you could ensure that the cooling system performed the way every year Tundra prior with the same advertised option did? Or maybe you would have contacted someone at Toyota Motor Manufacturing to see if they made any undisclosed changes to the drive train for the 2019 model year?

    Give me a break.

    I know you are.

As I mentioned in my previous comments, I would open the hood and inspect before I made my buying decision. I would question the absence of a remote transmission cooler... I would make sure I knew as much about the changes made so that I could make an informed buying decision.

    What would you do?

Yes, it always helps to look and ask questions. But a lot of people don't know what they would be looking for to begin with. They just know that it has something that keeps the trans cool. That is what Toyota put on the window sticker. A good salesperson could really talk up that trans cooler (warmer) if someone did question it.

Or there might be no point in asking because the salesman knows less about the truck than you do.

    True!

This is why the buyer should always do their own research, and press on until they find answers to their questions.

Being brand new to Toyota, and given the amount of people looking at this truck before I signed on the line for a really good price I admit it was a bit rushed. Although, I did ask about the tow package and what it included. I recall specifically looking at used 18's and 17's with coolers, but the salesperson for my new one I guess probably didn't know or didn't feel it necessary to explain any differences.

You win some you lose some, but I do believe Toyota should at least somehow justify the change and make it CLEAR that these new trucks DO NOT have an external radiator for the transmission like they used to. Its like every vehicle, nothing is perfect but I always like to inch that way towards it to save trouble and $$ down the line.

They just want to sell vehicles. They will say anything to make a sale. No matter if they know less than the buyer.

If you're so informed, then you would know that opening the hood on a 2019 would not reveal whether or not there was a remote transmission cooler. Even if it didn't use the ac condenser (like in my '12) and was a separate unit by the radiator, one would be looking at it through the grill and not by opening the hood. You know not what you are trying to speak of.

What would I do?... I would read and believe that Toyota advertised the product accurately. Which is what I did, and why I am complaining. I don't understand why you are trying to be devil's advocate here? You have no dog in this fight and you are bringing no helpful information to this thread. Troll on though if it makes you happy.

I literally just got off the phone with Toyota Customer Support after spending an hour combined on hold back and forth. I advised them of my concern with the temperatures I was seeing driving and towing and about the previous year model specs. They opened a case and gave me a case number on the issue. I then was transferred to another person, an engineer maybe? They advised me that the "transmissions cooling system is working as designed and that those are normal temperatures for the new design". I also asked about adding the older Toyota part with thermostat with an external cooler, this would absolutely void my warranty noted as "tampering with factory installed parts not indented in the design". I next asked about changing to a different fluid (Amsoil) that may deal with the temps better since my temp lights had came on. They advised me that that would also void my warranty.

The first person I spoke to said this was the 3rd or 4th call they have about people complaining about trans. temps this week on 19/20 models and they have had no reported failures and no service bulletins are in effect. Apparently the common denominator of callers were folks who discovered the temps and "have been online reading and were armchair mechanics", said the second person they let me speak to. Basically telling me in other words to run the piss out of it, it is under warranty and ignore the temps its "normal".

I gotta agree on this one. While I’m not so wound up because I don’t tow a lot but if I bought my Tundra for a tow vehicle and found this out after the fact, I’d be hot (pun intended!)

    There you go.

Eschew this Catch 22 they're providing, and (1) drive that MF like it's on loan from Toyota (assumes you trade trucks every five years or less), or (2) install an external cooler (if you keep your trucks forever). No more anxiety.

I hope you apologized for interrupting their busy day with this silly-azz problem. :D

I’d get an extended warranty if anything for the cam tower leak and faulty transmission!

Yeah, I know. But...You bought Toyota because you knew they were reliable. What are the odds you're going to need the transmission warranty if you take care of the transmission by retrofitting an external cooler? And, even if you do have a transmission problem, removing that cooler before taking it in would be a real pita, but doable for a possible $5K-$7K repair. They want to play games, accomodate them. JMHO.

Interesting thread, I have spent several days off and on reading thru it.

I see some interesting points of views from all sides.

IMO, I would not worry about this. Toyota designed it that way for a reason, good or bad, time will tell. I say drive it, pull it and haul it. If the transmission fails then file a claim for warranty if its under warranty, its there for a reason. If its out of warranty and you think you will feel better about things with a external cooler then add one to it, heck even its still covered by a warranty and you think one will put your mind at ease then add one to it.

Other than that drive it and enjoy it. I dont think I will waste my time worrying about a external cooler.
