2019 2020 transmission cooler missing

Yes, the trans fluid temp is getting too hot. Look at the standard basis (as shown in multiple posts on here) the fluids operating temperatures and what they do at each stage above 220F. Toyota can't and still has yet to give specification of the transmissions "normal" operating temperature range. Nor will they even say at what temperature the fluid starts to decompose

It is NOT a synthetic fluid, Spoken directly from my ExxonMobil rep. "Toyota WS ATF fluid is NOT a synthetic fluid"
Flash points are relevant to an extent, but thats the peak the fluid can reach before total failure. The important # is to know as what temperature does the fluid START to "breakdown" decompose

 

Dont me get started on our 2019 Tahoe.
Powertrain issue after powertrain issue that never seem to "be able to be recreated" - BS guys, fcuking BS. Now, top end noise - sounds like an oil pressure issue on cold start. Going back next week. Yay.

 

^This! I agree 100%. The transmission team didn’t just have a meeting and say “well geewhiz, we’ve not had any problems with our transmissions let’s remove the cooler and see if anyone notices! And let’s see how long before they overheat and fail...”
There was a reason and I am confident it what evaluated, tested, analyzed, etc. well before the change in the 2019 MY.

If this was the case then their own branded "Synthetic ATF" isn't "synthetic" either.

its really easy. monitor your own transmission fluid temps. Compare them to a 2018 model or older where the only thing that has changed is the removal of the external transmission cooler. Make your own opinions from there and call toyota with your concern if you have one. but the ONLY way this is going to get resolved is if MULTIPLE people are raising this concern directly to Toyota

I can buy some Wolf's Head oil. Put a few drops of a synthetic compound in it and call it a "synthetic" blend oil.

Nah. I bought this super duper reliable Tundra so I don't have to spend money doing stuff like monitoring transmission temps while pulling a trailer 2,000 lbs below max tow rating. Shit, I could have bought a Ford if I thought this truck was that crappy.

 

I see too much "may" and "might" regarding high temps, by having installed a cooler it's "will".

Yep, that’s the only stipulation and I have no problem with it. I figure it gives them a little extra incentive to do things right.

 

From what I have read it was a change in refrigerant in 2019 that caused a change in the ac condenser and the atf cooler could no longer be integrated.

07-mid 10 the atf cooler was separate in front of the condenser and radiator.

mid 10-18 the atf cooler was integrated with the ac condenser.

If the condenser had to be redesigned in 19 because of new refrigerant, Toyota wasn’t going to design and test a new separate cooler for 2 or 3 model years knowing the tundra was being redesigned already. The separate one from 07-10 won’t fit, bolts don’t line up.

Toyota can’t simply put the old ac condenser/ atf cooler on an 19/20. They aren’t going to design a new one on a truck on its way out. They also aren’t going to contract an aftermarket company like Hayden to add one. They have said several times it’s within spec and that’s going to be their (and their lawyers) final answer.

If I had a 19/20 I was keeping, I’d add one myself. It’s easy to remove if you ever have trans issues before you take it to the dealer.

 

Sell it! Prices on used Tundras are sky high right now. No better time to dump it and cash out.

 

Re-read what you quoted me on. I was speaking to another member about potential liability issues with an over loaded truck.

 

It's not as bad as I whine about. My plan is to keep it until I get a motorhome in a few years or just sell the TT. It's OK. Just not blown over.

 

yeah terminology is getting in the way--but your sentiment is accurate.

The SDS doesn't show the actual composition.
What is shown is the description of the processing to get the oils--this is a huge hint for synthetic vs non synthetic.
Hydrotreating and hydrocracking are a process step in making Group 3 oils which are considered synthetic, even though mineral oil based, due to the change in structure.
There could be more of a mixture involved in WS than is shown on the SDS due to trade secret protections. On paper it looks similar to a gas turbine oil (way hotter than a little transmission). These oils have a polyol ester and PAO base. Not sure if WS has this or not.

Mobil1 synthetic atf has solvent dewaxed oils which is the lowest grade oil out there--yet is marketed as synthetic.

I have an email into mobil tech support to see if there is any POE or PAO content to the oil. They may not indicate.

Well I suppose Toyota "may" have changed something in the Tundra transmission in 19 and 20 to allow for higher than shit temps but somehow I doubt it. How's that for a keyboard engineer.

 

Prices are so high I was going to sell my 2019 and get a 2020, but common sense prevailed - I got my truck right where I want it, it runs great and has zero issues.
If I ever had a need to tow regularly I’d get a 3/4 or probably a 1 ton. Guy at work has a F-350 Platinum and it’s real nice (the walk home from a breakdown isn’t part of the advertisement though).

odds are they wont answer it. i just got off the phone (about an hour ago) with my exxonmobil rep. legally they can't say anything about Toyota's WS fluid because its "their" proprietary fluid. But what i was told WS is not a "real" synthetic ATF fluid.

 

I'm gonna get a tandem axle MACK to do all my towing.

 

My statement had nothing to do with reliability, though. I can't figure out how your comment about reliability related to my statement.
