What do you TOW with your Tundra?

Its Winnebago Micro Minnie 5th wheel with those specs. 7ft wide instead of the normal 8ft wide. Love Toyotas everything I've own has been a Toyota except 1962 VW, don't wanna go to 3/4 or 1 ton.

 

You also didn't say which body style you have. I've heard there's a high probability of hitting your back window with the front of the 5th wheel if you have a CM with the short (5.5 ft) box. And on certain older 5th wheels the pin is set farther back/ doesn't move forward for hitching so you actually need an 8 ft box. My grandfather found that with his 5th wheel but it's at least 20 years old.

 

They currently have what is a 5th wheel slide, that the pin is in the stock position while driving straight and on a turn will slide back giving you the room to make an almost 90 degree turn. It will return to stock position once you are driving straight once again. Haven't decided on what model I need to get, probably with the most towing capacity

 

A 3/4 to one ton if towing a 5th wheel honestly.

 

And that's the downfall. Look at the sticker on your Tundra's door frame and see what it says your payload is. Most are in the 1200-1300 lbs range at best, so that trailer is going to eat that in a hurry and that is before you put propane, batteries, or water in the trailer. If you hauled it dry and didn't have any passengers or gear in the truck, you'd be ok. Realistically, you're going to be over your payload with that trailer on just about any 1/2 ton truck. You are shopping trailers in the 3/4 and 1 ton range.
Doesn't stop lots of people from doing it anyway, and the Tundra pulls those things around just fine, but you will be doing it beyond the manufacturer's limits and recommendations.

I would run it. You maybe be slightly over payload but almost everything you tow your going to be over payload. If you were looking to buy the same weight of a TT with the same GVWR of 7K you would have less payload on the truck but you would still be over. Personally I would rather have 1,200lbs in the bed of the truck than 600lbs on the bumper. The handling of the 5th will be much better than the TT and no sway concerns. You are going to require either air bags or sumosprings to help with the weight and your should upgrade to 10ply tires.


For reference, I tow a Coachman 204RD with a weight of around 5.5k and I'm over payload. I have a 2020 double cab 4X4.

 

I try not to be that guy, lol. But seriously, when do you become the weight police? If someone asks if their truck, with a payload of 1,200 pounds, can safely tow a trailer with a pin weight of 1,200 lbs dry, do you....

A: tell them, fuck yes, this truck can tow a space shuttle

B: suggest that might be a little too much weight

C: ignore the post, so you don't become the hated Tow Police, which they are currently trying to defund, if I understand the news correctly.

 

Provide the info, and let them decide for themselves.

 

I'm just the opposite of the weight police. The payload decal on the Tundra is BS. 1200lbs in the bed of the truck isnt going to make it unsafe. Just to put in perspective my 2015 Camry has a higher payload than my 2020 Tundra. After weighting my truck and doing the math I can only carry 813lbs. My Camry can carry over 900lbs. Still think the payload number makes sense? Many on the forum have towed fifth wheels and have no issues but no one mentions it because forum members tend to get a little too excited about it (weight police).

But a pin weight of 1,200 dry is not going to just put 1,200 lbs in the bed, right? It could put 1,500 in the bed, and then add possibly 400 or more inside the truck.

Exactly, but some consider you Tow Police if you advise against hauling shit that's 500 lbs over payload. I think there's actually a sticky thread on here about that. Or it could have been TacomaWorld. IDK.

I have a feeling the boat market bubble is about to burst. My 2011 Axis is worth just as much or more today than when I bought it 4 years ago. It has depreciated about $10-12k over its 9 year life. Even beats out a Tundra on resale!

 

I've heard the from people who own Tundra's that it pull like crazy. There's a guy on YouTube that pulls a 5th wheel. I just retired and would like the reliability of the Tundra to go cross country. Any new on the 2022 Tundra's Hybrid / Twin Turbo with a smaller engine but higher towing capacities? Don't wanna wait two more years.

 

I hope you're right. I'm sick of seeing people trying to sell their 2001 Ski Nautique for 18k.

That thing is gorgeous. Love that it doesn't have 23" wheels, hasn't been slammed to the ground, had the ass lifted, or been molested in other terrible ways. I bet it sounds glorious too.
