This isn't the worst design by far. My brother and dad are a mechanics. One of them told me about a starter they had to change that was underneath the intake manifold, inside of the engine in the lifter valley. As an automotive engineer with a background in mechanic work, (worked in Dad's shop as a kid) it blew my mind. That's the only starter replacement I've ever heard of that you need an intake manifold gasket to complete the job. I think it was a Ford or a Chrysler sedan, but I can't remember for sure.

The Tundra 4.7 is like this. Nice way to bake a starter.

Also the Cadillac Northstar has this same shitty design.

WTF is it with these engineers who design this shit? They should be made to work on them.

You jinxed me. The day after I read this thread the first time my starter died without warning @ 182k miles.

It took me about 7 hours to replace it in my driveway. The bolts on the exhaust manifold heat shield were rusted in place and the bolt heads were so rusted the socket wouldn't grab them. It would've taken longer if I hadn't unbolt the motor mount and jacked the motor up to get the old starter out and new starter in.

I just had the started replaced at the dealer on my 2007 5.7L rear wheel drive. Not bad, got 14 years and 185380 out of it.
Would have tried it myself, but did some research and wasn't up to the task; as it is my daily driver and didn't want it down for a few days.

    ^^this!
Mine kicked it at 165k, also prior to acquiring it i found out that it was a PA Farm truck. So I can't even imagine how much service it was put through before failure. I attempted but ultimately sent it to my mechanic so it wasn't down for days.

2007 Double Cab Limited with 198,000 original starter. I am worried, last summer during a hot day it just clicked when I turned it over. I knew the battery was old so I checked the wires and the negative was a bit loose. Closed the hood and it started right up. I ended up replacing the battery, and haven't had a problem since. I am looking at doing a motor mount upgrade, and think that would be a good time to change that sucker out, since I'll be there anyway.

Just replaced mine, what an awfull job. 175000 miles 2008 double cab 5.7 4x4. I'm pretty sure it was the solinoid because when it would start the starter was nice and strong. Then other times it would just click. those two inner heat shields were a pain in the ass, even with the motor jacked up an inch.

So how far does the engine need to be raised to replace the starter without doing any damage?
    Asking for future reference..

Maybe 2 inches? You start feeling the pressure of the other motor mount around that point.

While pulling 10k trailer automatic trans warning came on. Pulled over shut it off to cool.. no start! Towed to dealer. Dealer said there was a fire, burned wiring. Went through insurance $4k! Replaced starter, wiring loom, battery.

When Toyota repaired the damaged parts, they blamed an aftermarket remote start kit.

I have 200k miles on my 2007 5.7L 4WD Double Cab SR5 TRD and starter just went out yesterday while camping out of state in Asheville NC. Toyota dealer received the tow and moved me to front of the line and is doing same day repair. For that privilege I'm paying $1,632.

Yes it is steep, I'm certain my regular Toyota dealer in Ohio would have a lower price. But they got me, I'm in North Carolina with a travel trailer sitting at camp and I need a running Tundra ASAP. I am thankful they are working fast and placing me high priority above other work they already had scheduled.

EDIT: Just talked to my service guy at my regular Ohio Toyota dealer, they would charge $1400 before tax so looks like the Asheville NC dealer is not too far off, final bill was $1500 before tax.

That's good you had yours replaced proactively. I learned a lesson on this - a couple times in the past month my Tundra did not start on the first try, but otherwise was running just fine - but now I know I should have mentioned it to my regular local dealer when I was in for oil service. But I'm thankful it did not die the evening before when I was on a mountain road hiking along a river with no cell service. Life will go on :)

    Wow. That DOES look annoying.

What did that trans come out of?
