    I’ve got an 06 double cab that I bought with a leveling kit/spacer lift. Thought I could live with it, but I was wrong. Plus I’ve been noticing a clunk coming from the front end when the suspension cycles off-road

    pretty well got it narrowed to down to icons or fox. Pros and cons for both?

    I’d like to run fox 2.5’s with a remote reservoir. Are the adjustable size worth the extra money or should I just get the 0-3 inch and be done?

    if I went icon, I’d go with the stage 3 kit.

    One or two guys here have run fox without issue. Mine were nothing but issues and 3 other guys on a different forum said the same. If I could go back i would have gone Icon, King, Radflo or Camburg (now discontinued).

    First issue with Fox is the mounting location for the resi is only okay if you have stock tires or minimal backspace, otherwise your tire will hit the hydraulic line.

    Bigger problem is the lower coil mount likes to hit the brake line where it joins the caliper. Thats downright scary.

    Biggest difference ride quality.

    Digressive vs progressive.

    Find someone local with Icon and then someone with basically anything else (fox, king, ADS, radflo) and decide which feels better to you.

    Appreciate the replies fellas

    I’ve ridden in trucks with fox and king setups. Icon is my wild card, don’t have any buddies running that setup.

    If I did go with the kings, y’all got a part number of link for rear kings that will work on a lifted 1st gen double cab? I can’t find anything

    Have you considered ADS? I wouldn't buy Fox because of the brake line issue stated above.

    @FirstGenVol
    I wasn’t aware of ads, I’m assuming their remote reservoir mounts the same as the fox setup?
    Which in turn will cause me problems when I bump up to 285’s from my current 265/75’s?

    @Casper421
    So far I can’t find a gripe with icon kit other than never ridden a truck equipped with that kit

    I ran icons on my 05 and currently on my 2010. They are very stiff at low speeds, but they handle corners in the mountains very well as a trade off.

    icons are at their best when at high speed impacts. Such as a dip or bump that comes out of nowhere. They are incredibly smooth in those. If you hit a speed bump at 10mph, ouch. Hit it at 35-40, controlled

    Like @Hbjeff said, icons are rough at low speeds. All the weight I carry has softened up the ride greatly with very little body roll. Plenty of control and confidence bombing down dirt roads.

    I don t understand the part about the reservoirs. It s a flexable hose. If they are in the way it can be bent and mounted so as to not be in the way. My lift probably helps but the line is not near the tires. Even if it was I could tuck the res into a spot that would be out of the way.
    [IMG]
    In my case there are no problems with the brake lines either. But those too can be moved out of the way. If you are talking about using stock geometry brake lines maybe, but if you are lifting truck re routing brake lines are probably a good idea anyway. In my case; a necessesity.

    how big a lift are your running? I’ll just be running the 2.5 or so. I guess I need to look and see how much clearance I’ve got in the fender wells on my 06. My only concern with a remote reservoir after some more research is I see guys mentioning the 285’s rub the frame at full lock.

    @Darkness
    What’s different on how the fox system mounts to cause it rub on the brake lines where the others don’t?

    *sorry for all the questions, I’m trying to buy once cry once lol, I appreciate all the info though.

    I went with the Icon stage 2 kit with the Delta Joint UCA and I absolutely love the setup. Here is a review on my build thread:

    If you saw the first gen design you would understand. Completely different from what you have there. Cans mount on the side of the frame where the tow tie downs are and the 18" hoses ride along the side of the frame. I tried pushing the can back to tuck the hose up or down but it didn't work. I shortened the hoses and replaced the straight fitting at the can with a 90 and made it work. No more problem.

    You cannot move the part of the brake line where it hits. It hits at the caliper, trust me I know the problem.

    @Cummins3500 you're getting a lot of mixed messages here because 2nd/3rd gen guys don't know you're working on a 1st gen. What works for them doesn't work or exist for us. If they don't have a first gen they'll only confuse you.

    @FirstGenVol that King setup works because its long travel, the arms push the tires 3.5" away from the frame. :cool:

    Photo borrowed from @FirstGenVol shows the Icon lower coil mount. Notice the mount is narrow near the bottom and rises up about 2", this is to provide clearance for the brake line at the caliper. Icon uses a 13" or 14" coil.
    upload_2019-6-13_16-42-56.jpg

    Fox went with a 16" coil and to make it fit they used a lower and wider mount, see how it doesn't rise from the eyelet?

    So I gave him some bad info I guess? My bad! I know I've seen several guys running bigger tires with a remote reservoir. I didn't realize long travel made a difference with hitting that hose or not.

    He was asking for opinions between 2 brands. Our experience with a particular brand is valid regardless of which generation truck we have (even if the specific parts and setup are different between generations). My experience with Icons on a 3rd gen truck is not a mixed message nor a cause for confusion. It is simply a report on the brand.

    Ride wise you are correct, the feel would be similar.

    My remark on mixed info isn't aimed at how the ride feels, but what parts/lift/how much lift are being used (because that really is a different world for us) and moreso the other poster who didn't understand the Fox problems on first gen trucks. Fox works great on 2nd and 3rd gen, on 1st they made some mistakes.

    Appreciate everybody’s input on it. From the sound of things remote reservoirs are a no go for 1st gens unless going long travel, right?

    I am curious about ADS though, on their website, it has a drop down that differentiates between long travel and just lift coils But has no option for an internal reservoir. But it looks like fox’s kit. If it has the rub Issues too I’ll cross it off the list also.

    * I came from the xterra world, I ain’t use to havin this many options lol

    The reservoirs are really there for you to be able to cycle the shaft for longer periods of time without cooking the fluid. You know your driving better than anyone. Reservoirs are Overkill for dirt roads.

    I know there is one member here running Fox, I can't recall what he did about his reservoir hose. Another guy is running ADS, which to me looked identical to Fox, not sure what he did either. He is the guy with red bumpers if that helps to find him, Jimmy I think?

    All I know is when I installed mine the way Fox intended there was no getting around it. I tried pushing the resi can as far back in the mount as I could to let me push the hose up the frame a bit but it isn't as flexible as you'd think. Maybe if I ran smaller tires and had an inch less backspace it would clear, either way it was a thoughtless design. I've never seen any other coilover use a resi mount like that.

    Thanks for the insight fellas, looks like I’m buying more headache than I want by insisting on remote reservoirs up front. The only reason I wanted em was just in case, I like to do everything overkill.

    On a side note, I stumbled upon radflo’s stuff. Holy hell that kit is pricey. And looks like it’s gonna suffer from the same rubbing issues
